Ireton’s Khouri inks with Catholic

Senior Louie Khouri (10), captained Ireton to an 18-win season, Cardinals best since 1986.

Louis Khouri, a senior at Bishop Ireton High School, has  made his college decision. He will attend nationally-ranked Catholic University in the fall.

The 6’1 combo guard was the first player to join Coach Neil Berkman in 2010. After transferring from the current WCAC champion, Bishop O’Connell, Louie had an accomplished career in and out of the classroom. His 16 against against Gonzaga in the WCAC quarterfinal upset helped earn him Honorable Mention all -WCAC.

Louie is second on the team in assists, minutes played and the third leading rebounder. He was the Alexandria Sportman of the month, February 2013. Earning an impressive 4.19 GPA and 2100 SAT score, Louis had a plethora of collegiate options.

“Louie is a precocious young man that ‘gets it’. He is the epitome of our school motto: be who you are and be that well. Louie Khouri embodies every quality I would want in my own son. We were very lucky to have him and we wish him well.”  said Berkman of the senior captain.  Khouri plans to study electrical engineering at Catholic as well as being a member of the basketball team.

Cardinals Top Potomac School, 17-6

There was no stopping junior Kendall Cunningham (above) in the Ireton win over Potomac School Saturady in McLean.

Junior Kendall Cunningham shredded the Potomac School Panthers’ defense for eight goals in a dominating 17-6 Bishop Ireton win on Saturday, April 13.  Cunningham also had a huge number of draw controls which led to the  Cardinals being able rely upon near-total ball control for a significant chunk of the game.  

After going up 6-0 early in the first half, Bishop Ireton started rotating everyone into the game which led to six other players besides Cunningham scoring goals.  Those other players were sophomore Kelly Matthews (3); freshman Kelly Larkin (2); junior Annie Barletta (1); and sophomores Natalie Irwin, Isabel Obregon, and Charlotte Sofield (1 each).   Seven different players also got assists: Sofield (4); Obregon (3); Matthews (2); and sophomores Christine Macey, Kaitlin Luzik, Irwin, and junior Barletta (1 each).   Junior goalie Olivia Cole had four saves.  

The Cardinals’ (8-4 overall and 2-1 WCAC record) next game is at Fannon Field on Friday, April 19, 4:00 p.m., against the defending WCAC champion, the Academy of the Holy Cross Tartans.

News and Notes:

– As of Monday, April 15, according to The Washington Post’s AllMetSports.com girls lacrosse statistics, Matthews is tied for 19th with 34 goals; Sofield is tied for 5th with 27 assists. Junior goalkeeper Olivia Cole is 6th with 98 saves.  

– LaxPower ranks the Cardinals #6 in their latest power rankings for the DC area behind St Stephens, Visitation, Good Counsel, Holy Cross, and Stone Ridge.  All 9 WCAC schools are among the top 25 in the area, a feather in the cap of the league.

Spring Break Brings Success to Girls Lacrosse

The Cardinals are 8-4 overall and 2-1 in the Washington Catholic Athletic Association with six regular season games remaining. The latest VISAA Division I and USA Today High School Sports polls both rank Bishop Ireton #2 in Virginia.  

On Tuesday, April 2, during their short trip up to Long Island, Bishop Ireton upset 11-6 defending New York state CHSAA 2012 runner-up Sacred Heart Academy of Hempstead. The Lady Cardinals offense saw six different players score goals. Kelly Matthews got a hat trick; Isabel Obregon and Charlotte Sofield each scored twice; and Kendall Cunningham, Kelly Larkin and Christine Macey all scored once each. Assists came from Natalie Irwin, Kaitlin Luzik, Cunningham, Larkin, Obregon and Sofield (2). Goalie Olivia Cole anchored the defense with a season-high 15 saves.  

The next day on Long Island the Lady Cardinals defeated Long Beach HS of Lido Beach 5-4 in a tough game against a very aggressive opponent who had averaged 12 goals per game in their previous three games. For Bishop Ireton, Matthews again got the hat trick as well as one assist; Larkin and Obregon had one goal each; Luzik and Macey each had one assist. Cole had eight key saves.   

The Lady Cardinals finished spring break with two games against very tough Peach State opponents at Fannon Field both on Friday, April 5. The strong Georgia teams were the nationally ranked-defending state champion Lady Eagles from Milton HS and the Lassiter HS Lady Trojans. Last year Bishop Ireton lost to Milton 12-9 at Fannon Field.   

In their Friday morning game against Milton, Bishop Ireton narrowly lost 12-11. The Lady Cardinals were down 10-5 at one point but battled back to 12-11 with 30 seconds left in the game. They were not able to get the last draw control and Milton ran out the clock. For BI, Matthews, Luzik and Sofield each scored a hat trick, and Obregon had two goals. Larkin had two assists and Sofield had four assists. Cole got eight saves.

When the final horn sounded Friday afternoon at the conclusion of the Lady Cardinals’ fourth game in four days Bishop Ireton had defeated Lassiter 15-12 in a hard fought game after opening the game in a 3-0 hole. In a game marred by multiple yellow cards, Bishop Ireton played the entire second half down one player. Matthews had six goals, Cunningham had four goals and Sofield had two goals. Larkin, Luzik and Macey each had one goal. In the assists category, Larkin had three, Sofield and Luzik had two each, and Cunningham, Macey and Obregon had one each. Cole had seven saves.   

Not resting on their laurels, the Lady Cardinals next faced St. John’s College High School on Tuesday, April 9. They asserted themselves early and often as they beat the Lady Cadets 22-7. Ten different BI players scored goals and seven different players got assists. The goal scorers were Cunningham (6), Sofield (5), Matthews (4), Grace Fletcher (1), Larkin (1), Luzik (1), Macey (1), Obregon (1), Cori Vasques (1) and Maggie Wiltsie (1). Obregon (4), Larkin (3), Sofield (3) Luzik (1), Macey (1), Matthews (1) and Wiltsie (1) got assists. Cole came up with seven saves in the crease.

DeMatha uses 5-run 5th to down Cardinals 7-1

While the Bishop Ireton Cardinals  hung tough on Saturday, DeMatha Stags pulled away late for the 7-1 victory at Frank Mann Field.  

Scott Schwartz had three extra-base hits for the Cardinals. He doubled in the second and fourth innings and homered in the sixth inning.   

Alkire got the win for DeMatha. He allowed one run over six innings. Alkire struck out four, walked one and gave up eight hits.  DeMatha’s Rosanoba, Thaxton and Morris combined for six hits and four RBIs.

The sixth inning saw Ireton score their only run on the day on a solo home run by Scott Schwartz.

The  Stags built upon its lead with five runs in the seventh. A clutch hit into a fielder’s choice scored Beverly to open the scoring in the frame. That was followed up by Rosanoba’s single, scoring Morris and Fitzmaurice.

Offense keys Cardinals in drubbing of Mustangs, 19-6

The 2013 Varsity Cardinals are in the thick of one of the most wide open WCAC baseball races in recent history.

Bishop Ireton continued to pile up the runs on Wednesday, scoring four runs in the seventh inning, en route to a one-sided 19-6 win over Bishop McNamara at Frank Mann Field.

The Cardinals’ Varsity scored six runs in the sixth on an RBI single by Ben Judd, an RBI double by Scott Schwartz, a two-run single by Cody Hagenston, a wild pitch, and an RBI single by Jimmy Swiger.  Hagenston racked up six RBIs on three hits for the redbirds.

Judd got the win for Ireton despite allowing six runs over four innings. He struck out two, walked one and surrendered seven hits.

The Cardinals pounded Bishop McNamara pitching, as seven hitters combined for 14 hits, 15 RBIs and 15 runs scored.  Ireton grabbed the lead early thanks to a first inning rally that saw one run cross the plate on an RBI single by Nick Tangora.

The home team scored four runs in the second inning, and then followed it up with four more in the seventh.  The second inning was  highlighted by a Scott Schwartz solo home run.

Bishop Ireton matched their two-run fourth inning with two more in the fifth. In the fourth, they scored on an RBI single by Joseph Bagnerise, plating Robert Corallo.

After pushing across three runs in the bottom of the fifth, Bishop McNamara faced just a 9-6 deficit. A three-run home run by Snow fueled Bishop McNamara’s comeback. John Todd ended the inning by getting Hax to ground out.

Bagnerise leads Cardinals past Gonzaga 3-1 in WCAC baseball

Joseph Bagnerise went 2-4 as the Bishop Ireton Cardinals  took home a 3-1 victory over the Gonzaga Eagles in seven innings at Hamilton Field on Saturday.  He singled in the first and fifth innings.

Cody Hagenston picked up the win for the Cardinals.  Hagenston pitched 5 1/3 innings and allowed one earned run, five hits and one walk while striking out four.  

The  Eagles scored their only run of the game on an RBI double by Van Hoose in the first inning.  Ireton countered and stayed on top until the final out after taking the lead in the fifth, scoring two runs.

Ireton drops a slugfest to O’Connell, 10-7

Ben Judd did all he could to give the Bishop Ireton a boost, but it wasn’t enough to get past Bishop O’Connell Knights, as the Cardinals  lost 10-7 in seven innings at Frank Mann Field on Tuesday.  Judd racked up two RBIs on two hits for the Bishop Ireton Cardinals Varsity. He singled in the third and fifth innings.  Basse got the win in relief for Bishop O’Connell Knights, pitching three innings and allowed no runs.

The Knights jumped out to an early 7-0 lead in the top of the second. They got things going when Vazquez singled. Shaw singled, scoring Tessier. Bishop O’Connell Knights pushed more runs across when Carson scored on an error, Vazquez and Shaw scored on a two-run single by Gressly, Gressly scored, German scored on an RBI triple by Daniele, and Daniele scored on a passed ball.

Ireton  tied the game in the third on a three-run single by Cody Hagenston that scored John Todd, Judd and Seth Scalsky.

Bishop O’Connell Knights didn’t relinquish the lead after scoring one run in the fourth inning when it scored on an RBI single by Tessier.  The Knights got one-run rallies in the sixth inning and the seventh. In the sixth, the Arlington school scored on a fielder’s choice, bringing home German.

Cadets bounce Cardinals in JV lacrosse, 8-4

The BI JVMen’s lacrosse team played a mistake ridden game and fell to St John’s 8-4 in Washington DC on Tuesday.

Freshman Midfielder Tony Caffi won the first face off of the game and passed to Frosh Mid Cristian Vasquez near the top of the crease.  Vasquez made a beautiful pass to Frosh Attackman Devon Reed, who scored @ 9: 38 of the 1st quarter.   The Cadets controlled the next faceoff and scored 20 seconds later to tie the game.  The Cardinals could not convert during a 2 minute, non-releasable Extra Man Opportunity early in the period.   The Cardinals allowed two more goals during the quarter, one on a Man Down situation and one on a scooped ground ball on the crease.  BI trailed 3-1 after one period.

Turnovers and an inability to scoop ground balls resulted in seven offensive possessions in the 2nd period without a shot.  When BI did control the ball they hit multiple pipes.  StJ scored on an EMO situation, extending the lead to 4-1.  Reed dodged from X to score a 2nd goal @ 3:14 in the 2nd quarter.  BI trailed 4-2 at the half. 

BI opened the 2nd half with a 48 second EMO but could score.  The Cadets added two more goals and extended the lead to 6-2.  Turnovers continued to plague the Cardinals who had 3 more possessions without a shot.  BI penalties provided StJ’s more scoring opportunities.

Reed added two more solo goals, but the Cadets answered twice.  Frosh Goalie Ryan Verducci had multiple saves throughout the game to keep the score close.  The BIJBMLax Cardinals host Good Counsel this Friday on Fannon Field.

Cardinals edged in Day 2 in Charleston HIT event

Andrew Selby once again went 2-4, but the Cardinals still fell to North Laural 4-3 in seven innings on Tuesday.

North Laural got it done with pitching on the way to a win. Their starter allowed three runs over 4 1/3 innings, striking out three, walking three and giving up five hits.

North Laural never surrendered the lead after the fifth inning, sending 10 hitters to the plate, scoring four runs on an RBI double and three singles.  Ireton countered with three in the bottom of the fifth, but could overcome the 4-run advantage.

Kyle Delaney walked, Corey Phillips and Andrew Selby singled, loading the bases.  A wild pitch scored Delaney before Joe Bagnerise doubled home Phillips and Selby. Following a walk to Scott Schwartz, the visiting North Laural got a foul out and strike out to end the rally. The Cardinals would go in order in the 6th and see Selby reach on an error in the 7th before the game ended with a pair of strike outs.

Travelers Rest Gives none to the Cardinals’ 6-3

Andrew Selby went 2-4, but the Cardinals still fell to Travelers Rest High School of South Carolina 6-3 in seven innings on Monday at Wondo in the first round of the HIT tournament in Charleston, SC Monday.

Two of the Bishop Ireton runs were scored thanks to timely hitting by Selby. He singled in the third inning and doubled in the seventh inning.

Travelers Rest couldn’t get anything going as long as freshman Robert Corallo was pitching. The Devildogs managed just two hits off of the the Bishop Ireton pitcher, who allowed no earned runs, walked none and struck out four during his 2 1/3 innings of work.

The  Carolina starter earned the win allowing two runs over four innings. He struck out two, walked two and surrendered three hits.

Travelers Rest stayed on top until the final out after taking the lead in the second, scoring one run on an RBI double.  The Devildogs added two more runs in the top of the third. A ground out scored their second run to get Travelers Rest on the board in the inning. That was followed up a double scoring the second run of the inning.

One run in the bottom of the third helped the Cardinals close their deficit to 3-1. An RBI single by Selby gave Ireton life. That threat came to an end when  Joseph Bagnerise to ground out.

One run in the bottom of the fourth helped the Alexandria school to close their deficit to 6-2. An error sparked the Card’s rally, before the Devildogs got Kyle Delaney to strike out to end the threat.

After pushing across one run in the bottom of the seventh, Bishop Ireton faced just a 6-3 deficit.  An RBI double by Selby triggered the Cardianls’ comeback, but with the tying run at the plate, the Devildogs got Sean Workman on a  strikeout to end the ballgame.
