While the Bishop Ireton Cardinals  hung tough on Saturday, DeMatha Stags pulled away late for the 7-1 victory at Frank Mann Field.

Scott Schwartz had three extra-base hits for the Cardinals. He doubled in the second and fourth innings and homered in the sixth inning.

Alkire got the win for DeMatha. He allowed one run over six innings. Alkire struck out four, walked one and gave up eight hits.  DeMatha’s Rosanoba, Thaxton and Morris combined for six hits and four RBIs.

The sixth inning saw Ireton score their only run on the day on a solo home run by Scott Schwartz.

The  Stags built upon its lead with five runs in the seventh. A clutch hit into a fielder’s choice scored Beverly to open the scoring in the frame. That was followed up by Rosanoba’s single, scoring Morris and Fitzmaurice.
