Ireton knocks off Paul VI to continue hot start

Bishop Ireton had a Cinderella run through the WCAC baseball tournament in 2008, sneaking out of the pack after a .500 record in the regular season.

The Cardinals appear determined to prove that was not a fluke under second-year head coach Mike Gallagher.

Bishop Ireton knocked off WCAC favorite 2-1 Friday night, marking the Redbirds’ third win over the
Panthers in their last four encounters, including in last season’s WCAC tournament semifinals.

Ireton has quietly used strong pitching from seniors Dan Nicol and John Robertson and opportune hitting to get off to a 6-0 start this season, the Cards best since a running off five straight to open the 2003 campaign. Ireton has a share of the
WCAC lead with DeMatha at 3-0.

“It’s great to be in this position, but it is more important to be good in May than to be good in March,” said Gallagher on the fast start.

With weather taking a non-conference match up with the Potomac School of McLean off the Saturday schedule, the Cardinals look forward to Monday at Four Mile Run and another Washington Catholic powerhouse, St. Johns College High School looming for the Alexandria school. First pitch is scheduled for 5:30pm.

By Ryan Mink
rmink@digitalsports.com

The WCAC has four girls and five boys on the Tewaarton Award watch list this spring, which was released Wednesday.

The Tewaarton Award Foundation sponsors the collegiate and high school men’s and
women’s Player of the Year awards, which are presented in Baltimore on
May 28th.

For the first time, Bishop Ireton has two players named to Baltimore/Washington All Regional Team. The players are Lauren Gray, who has signed play next fall at Georgetown, and Claire Banta, who inked her commitment to Virginia.

DeMatha has three players — goalie Ryan Brant and midfielders Pat Harbeson and TJ Harris. Gonzaga goalie Connor Baucom also made the list.

Holy Cross senior Hayley Katzenberger, the reigning field hockey All-Beltway Player of the Year, is also on the list along with Good Counsel’s Monica Baumgartner.

Ireton cheerleaders take fifth at competition

The Bishop Ireton Cheerleaders were in Charlotte, NC participating in the Christian Cheerleading Association’s National Championship from March 5-7.

Each team must have received 1st or 2nd place in one of the Classic or Regional competitions in order to receive a bid to Nationals. Over 200 teams across the U.S. qualified to participate. Bishop Ireton finished 5th place in the competition, a spectacular job for a first year competitive team.

More significantly, they were awarded the “Spirit of Competition” trophy. Each team participating votes on their favorite team, and Bishop Ireton received the most votes to receive this trophy. The trophy is actually the largest trophy and most respected award, for their performance and conduct during the competition.

Senior Kyrsti Ashmall was recognized by the organization as a scholar-athlete and received several college scholarships. Additionally, Ireton Coach Angela Hope was recognized as being one of the top 20 cheerleading coaches in America.

“All in all, they represented our school superbly and I am very proud of them,” Athletic Director Bill Simmons said. “Well done!”

Honorable Mentions (in no order):
H.E.L. Yeah!
— Lackey had a two-point lead in a 3A South quarterfinal against Potomac and the visiting Wolverines had possession, hoping
for the tie and overtime. But the ball is knocked loose, and Charger senior Rashad Beam drives in for the dunk. It came after the buzzer and didn’t count, but Beam scored
41 points to lead Lackey to victory.
Stone Passes — The Cougars clinched a second-consecutive 4A East championship with a 73-58 win over
Glen Burnie. State finalists a year ago, the Cougars have been here before, but
last year’s regional final was on the road, so why not storm the court?
Stone plays Wise in the 4A state semis on Thursday night at Comcast Center.
Waters is Wet — C.H. Flowers senior Brittney Waters sinks the
game-winning free throw with :05 seconds remaining to lift Flowers
over Wise, 62-61, in the 4A South semifinal on Thursday. It was also Waters’ 18th birthday.

**BONUS**
Richmond Top Five
:
No. 5 — McKie Steal Leads to Oop
No. 4 — Magic Wann
No. 3 — Maxwell Overhead to Raines
No. 2 — McKie to Victory
No. 1 — Evans … No Words

No. 10 — Cougars Popping, Not Stopping
Northern Region, Virginia — In its Virginia AAA State quarterfinal win over Atlee, 74-45, Oakton tied a AAA State tournament record with nine 3-pointers. The Cougars had eight through three quarters and only attempted two in the final period. They were 9-for-18 from long range for the game.

No. 9 — Up, Up and Golladay
Prince George’s County, Maryland — Puma guard David Golladay locked up the 4A South Region with this fast-break dunk, as Wise earned its first ever regional basketball title over Roosevelt, 71-58. In November, the Pumas beat the Raiders for the school’s first-ever regional football title, as well.

No. 8 — You Got Sarve-d
Loudoun County, Virginia — In the Group AA Division 4 State quarterfinals, Raider senior Kerry Sarver goes behind the back to sophomore Alissa Kain for a fluid, scoop finish as a part of Loudoun County’s 90-51 win over Courtland. The Raiders scored 30 points in the second quarter and 53 in the first half.

No. 7 — Kromah … Let Him Go
Prince George’s County, Maryland — After a missed Bulldog alley-oop, Raider senior Lasan Kromah takes off from the dotted line for a transition dunk with a defender on his back. More from Kromah and the 4A South semifinal further down.

No. 6 — Electric E.J.
Northern Region, Virginia — In a tight Northern Region final between T.C. Williams and Hayfield, Titan senior — and Northern Region Player of the Year — Ed Jenkins puts the game away with this drive to the basket and head-over-heels layup-and-one. Jenkins was named Tournament MVP as T.C. Williams won its third-straight regional championship.

No. 5 — SCREAMING Eagle   1  2
Montgomery County, Maryland — In the 3A West Region final, an 87-69 win for Seneca Valley over Paint Branch, Screaming Eagle sophomore Jordan Goodman hyped up the crowd with a pair of alley-oop finishes. He finished with 24 points and Seneca Valley faces unbeaten Lake Clifton in the 3A State semifinals at the Comcast Center on March 12.

No. 4 — Kromah Pretty Reverse
Prince George’s County, Maryland — Raider senior Lasan Kromah takes off from outside the paint for this must-see reverse layup in the 4A South semifinals. Kromah had 10 points in Roosevelt’s 64-60 win over Bowie, but four made it into the countdown.

No. 3 — Strong Armwood
Independent Priviate Schools — In the nationally-anticipated game between No. 3 Oak Hill and No. 6 Montrose Christian, Mustang forward Isaiah Armwood stood out. In the first half, Armwood had a block-slash-outlet pass to Terrence Ross for a fast-break jam and followed it with a put-back dunk of his own. But the Warriors (38-0) got the better of the score sheet, 69-63.

No. 2 — That’s ‘Ji
W.C.A.C., Va./Md./D.C. — In the W.C.A.C. championship game, DeMatha trailed Gonzaga by one point with 9.9 seconds remaining. But the Stags went the length of the court and junior Jerian Grant found senior Naji Hibbert under the game basket for the league-winning lay-in with 1.8 seconds left.

No. 1 — Olase-Wow
Montgomery County, Maryland — Springbrook senior Jamal Olasewere finishes on the fast break through a Walter Johnson would-be shot-blocker. Olasewere has led the Blue Devils to a perfect 25-0 record, a 35-game winning streak and into the 4A State semifinals.
