Senior Heather Pearson (23) and sophomore Heather Russell scored 9 points in the Cardinals setback to PVI Tuesday.

Bishop Ireton’s juniors Alex Stipano and Cecilia Leone scored 11 points, but it was not enough as the Cardinals fell to Paul VI 85-52 Tuesday in Alexandria.

The visiting Panthers broke to a 20-9 first period advantage and led 43-21 at intermission.  Paul VI cemented their lead in the third quarter, scoring 29 points and cruised to the win.

Putting up seven points in the first period, Leone wasted no time putting points on the board for the  Cardinals.

Paul VI had nine players score including four in double figures, led by Kendall Hunter’s 15. The victory pushed the visiting Panthers to 10-1 in WCAC play while the Cardinals suffered their eleventh setback in league play.

Cardinals come up just short, 56-52

Senior Jamie Senft (50) had a game-high 18 points, but the Cardinals fell just short of an upset in Fairfax over top-ranked PVI Tuesday.

Jamie Senft scored a game-high 18 points, including 11 in the third quarter, but the Cardinals fell to top-ranked Paul VI 56-52 Tuesday night in Fairfax .

Bishop Ireton fell behind 29-19 at intermission then played an inspired second half cutting the lead to 54-52 in the game’s final minute and a nifty back door layup.  The Cardinals had their chances at the end, with the ball, down a bucket with 19 seconds to play, but couldn’t convert and the Panthers used a pair of free throws to put the game out of reach.

Ireton also got help from  Ty Quarles (6 points, 2 rebounds), Daniel Noe (5 points, 7 rebounds), Jeremiah Brooks (4 points, 2 rebounds) and Michael Everett (2 points).   Patrick Moseh was a big contributor as well, racking up eight rebounds.  The Cardinals finished the game with 23 rebounds (four offensive/19 defensive).

Swimmers Top O’Connell on Senior Night, 203-133

Cardinal seniors celebrate a Senior Night win over rival Bishop O'Connell at Marymount University.

Senior night was a sweet one for Ireton’s class of 2014 as they sprinted past diocesan rival, Bishop O’Connell, Friday night 203-133 at Marymount University.  The girls recorded a 98-72 advantage while the boys raced to a 105-61 decision.

Coach John Gullickson’s guys won 2 of 3 relays, and grabbed the second and third place finishes to mitigate the damage in the third, while displaying the depth of their lineup to score all-important points for third through fifth place  since each team won 4 of 8 individual races.  For Ireton, Michael Morrison won the 200 free while Sam Price and Carlos Chiriboga delivered five more team points with third and fourth place finishes.  Ben Gorski claimed the top stop in the 200 IM, while Jimmy Grant was edged by O’Connell’s Christian Tiernan in the 50 free. He was, however, part of 9 points the Cardinals garnered with Ryan Scott and Kevin Abbed right behind Grant.

The Knights Tiernan again captured the 100 butterfly, but the Cardinals erased those six points by snaring 9 of their own behind the finishes of AJ Salvatori, Carl Smearman, and Dylan Louison.  Once again, O’Connell got a win in the 100 free behind Chris Outlaw, but the Cardinals bounced back to capture the remaining 9 team points with Ryan, Carter Rostron, and Abbed.

Morrison won his second race of the evening with a 25 second win in the grueling 50o free style event and Chiriboga and Jermaine Thompson added five more team points with third and fourth place finishes.  AJ Salvatori out dueled Outlaw in the 100 backstroke and Price and Smearman chipped in more team points at third, fourth. Ben Gorski cruised to a win in the 100 breaststroke for Ireton and again Louison’s third and Peter Shumate’s 5th place finished distanced the Knights in the team standings.

The girls had a much closer matchup with the perennially strong Knights, but depth again carried the day for the Cardinals. O’Connell’s girls won two of the three relay events, but Bishop Ireton piled up the team points in both events with second and third place finishes in the 200 Medley and 400 free style events.  The cardinal and gold did get a win in the 200 free relay, behind Catherine Kennedy, Virginia Beineke, Clara Boggs, and Emma Klein.  Annie Sullivan, Mary Margaret Anthony, Maddie Sanasack, and Alex Branham piled on more team points with a third to go with the win.

Clara Boggs got Ireton off to a fast start in individual events, winning the 200 free with Beineke and Julianna Sampaio snaring a third and fourth.  Boggs would win her second individual event of the evening in the 500 free as well.  The 500 was good to Ireton as Beineke was second and Sampiano was edged by the Knights’ Maureen Duesterhaus to prevent a sweep for Ireton in the event.  Emma Klein captured a pair of firsts as well, taking the 200 IM and the 100 butterfly.

Hayley Snell won the 50 free in a thrilling finish over Katie Kinsella of DJO by a mere :00.2 seconds.  Kennedy was close on their heels for third. Anna Shumate, Kennedy, and Kaitlyn Nguyen finished second through fourth to offset a win for Sarah Cahill in the 100 breaststroke.

Little time for rest for Bishop Ireton as the Cardinals head to the PG Sports and Learning Center Sunday for the East Coast Catholic Regional Champions.

Cardinals bounce back with another road win, 77-68

Teammates praised senior Jamie Senft (50) for his play at McNamara Sunday in Cardinals' 77-68 win.

We played together and played a complete game.” commented Ireton’s Patrick Moseh.

Daniel Noe’s 23 points propelled the Cardinals to a 77-68 victory over Bishop McNamara on Sunday.  A 15-2 run during the first quarter allowed the Cardinals to break away, eventually claiming a 42-30 lead by halftime.

Noe was the leader of the Cardinals’s offense with 23 points, including eight during the fourth period.   Ty Quarles (14 points) and Nicholas Schmelzer (6) each contributed multiple three-pointers. Cardinals just short at O’Connell 63-61

Senior Dan Noe again was the game-high scorer for the Cardinals who gave first place O'Connell a scare in the 63-61 contest.

Dan Noe had a game-high 23 and Patrick Moseh added 19, but Bishop O’Connell found just enough to avoid their first WCAC setback with a hard fought 63-61 win in Arlington Friday night.

It was a battle from start to finish, the Cardinals jumping out to a 7-2 lead on five points from Noe and a Ty Quarles jumper.  The Cardinals nursed the lead through the opening quarter until the Knights’ Melo Trimble gave O’Connell its first advantage at 15-13.  The quarter ended with the home team up 17-15.

A Trimble jumper gave O’Connell its biggest lead at 25-18.  Ireton continued to hang around and used a 7-3 run to end the first half to go to intermission down by only 31-30.

Noe and Quarles scored the second half’s first 5 points and Ireton had a 35-31 lead. O’Connell scored the next six points to regain the lead 36-35.  The teams sparred back and forth into the game’s fourth period with O’Connell nursing a 45-41 margin.

Jamie Senft, Noe, and Moseh kept Ireton close in the final period, then Quarles gave Ireton a three pointer and a 52-50 lead. Neither team could gain a cushion  as the game raced to its conclusion after a Moseh field goal tied the game 59-59 in the final minute of play.

Trimble’s free throws put the home team in front with :42 left to play, 61-59, and Randall Gaskins’ free throws widened the gap to 63-59.  Again Moseh converted a pair of free throws and when Ako Adams missed the front end of a one and one, Ireton had one last opportunity.

Coach Neil Berkman got a time out and the Cardinals planned their last play. The Cardinals got the ball to the guy that carried them most of the night, but senior Dan Noe couldn’t get the last shot to fall and the first place Knights escaped with a 63-61 win on their home court.

Bishop Ireton has another road date on Sunday with Bishop McNamara in Forestville, while the Knights get red hot St Johns.  The Cardinals will see a varsity tipoff slated for 3:30.

It was "bombs away" for junior Alex Stipano whose three-pointers led Ireton on a 20-1 run in the first half.

The Cardinals fell to Bishop O’Connell on Saturday, 55-49, despite a game-high effort from Cecilia Leone scoring 15 points. Bishop O’Connell clinched their lead in the fourth quarter on a free throw from Katie Meckus.

With a 22-point first quarter on the strength of a 20-1 run, the Cardinals pulled ahead early, eventually claiming a 30-27 lead by halftime. Bishop Ireton’s boys extend road wins to four, 51-35 over Potomac School

Dan Noe (3) drains one of 2 three-point shots he made on his way to a game-high 14 points.

Dan Noe’s game-high 14 points powered Bishop Ireton to their fourth consecutive road win 51-35 over a highly regarded Potomac School (10-4, 2-2) squad in McLean on Saturday afternoon.   The nonconference win pushes 5th ranked Ireton to 12-5 on the year, but also gives the Cardinals an important VISAA win over a rival VISAA Division I opponent.

The visiting Cardinals jumped out to  17-7 first quarter lead when Nick Schmelzer and Ty Quarles hit back-to-back three in Ireton’s first two possessions to quickly grab a 6-0 advantage and set the tone for the contest.

When Quarles made his second three of the game and tacked on a pair of free throws in the second quarter, the Cardinals had ballooned the advantage to 24-11. A Brooks Mays  three-pointer following a Dan Noe bucket pulled the Panthers back to 27-16 at halftime.

Pat Moseh scored Ireton’s first 6 points of the third quarter, a period where the Cardinals outscored their hosts by a 13-9 count, and headed into the game’s final quarter with a 40-25 margin.   The final period was a wash, with the Cardinals playing reserve players and the teams trading points to the final score.

In addition to Noe’s 14, Moseh scored in double figures with 10, Jamie Senft added 9, Quarles 8, and Schmelzer and Jeremiah Brooks both had 5.  Josh Fraser paced the Panthers with 10, Logan Samuels added 8 and Chris Caskin chipped in 6 for Potomac.

For the Cardinals, at 12-5, 3-4 in WCAC action, it marked their fourth win in a row, all away from the friendly confines of Father Godley Gymnasium.  Coach Neil Berkman’s squad will host Bishop McNamara Tuesday before heading out for the second half of the rugged WCAC campaign.

Friday is a trip to Arlington and a date with Bishop O’Connell,  a trip to Bishop McNamara  is on tap for Sunday afternoon followed by another bus ride, this one on Tuesday to Fairfax and nationally ranked Paul VI.
