Cardinals Top Potomac School, 17-6

There was no stopping junior Kendall Cunningham (above) in the Ireton win over Potomac School Saturady in McLean.

Junior Kendall Cunningham shredded the Potomac School Panthers’ defense for eight goals in a dominating 17-6 Bishop Ireton win on Saturday, April 13.  Cunningham also had a huge number of draw controls which led to the  Cardinals being able rely upon near-total ball control for a significant chunk of the game.

After going up 6-0 early in the first half, Bishop Ireton started rotating everyone into the game which led to six other players besides Cunningham scoring goals.  Those other players were sophomore Kelly Matthews (3); freshman Kelly Larkin (2); junior Annie Barletta (1); and sophomores Natalie Irwin, Isabel Obregon, and Charlotte Sofield (1 each).   Seven different players also got assists: Sofield (4); Obregon (3); Matthews (2); and sophomores Christine Macey, Kaitlin Luzik, Irwin, and junior Barletta (1 each).   Junior goalie Olivia Cole had four saves.

The Cardinals’ (8-4 overall and 2-1 WCAC record) next game is at Fannon Field on Friday, April 19, 4:00 p.m., against the defending WCAC champion, the Academy of the Holy Cross Tartans.

News and Notes:

– As of Monday, April 15, according to The Washington Post’s AllMetSports.com girls lacrosse statistics, Matthews is tied for 19th with 34 goals; Sofield is tied for 5th with 27 assists. Junior goalkeeper Olivia Cole is 6th with 98 saves.

– LaxPower ranks the Cardinals #6 in their latest power rankings for the DC area behind St Stephens, Visitation, Good Counsel, Holy Cross, and Stone Ridge.  All 9 WCAC schools are among the top 25 in the area, a feather in the cap of the league.
