Andrew Selby went 2-4, but the Cardinals still fell to Travelers Rest High School of South Carolina 6-3 in seven innings on Monday at Wondo in the first round of the HIT tournament in Charleston, SC Monday.

Two of the Bishop Ireton runs were scored thanks to timely hitting by Selby. He singled in the third inning and doubled in the seventh inning.

Travelers Rest couldn’t get anything going as long as freshman Robert Corallo was pitching. The Devildogs managed just two hits off of the the Bishop Ireton pitcher, who allowed no earned runs, walked none and struck out four during his 2 1/3 innings of work.

The  Carolina starter earned the win allowing two runs over four innings. He struck out two, walked two and surrendered three hits.

Travelers Rest stayed on top until the final out after taking the lead in the second, scoring one run on an RBI double.  The Devildogs added two more runs in the top of the third. A ground out scored their second run to get Travelers Rest on the board in the inning. That was followed up a double scoring the second run of the inning.

One run in the bottom of the third helped the Cardinals close their deficit to 3-1. An RBI single by Selby gave Ireton life. That threat came to an end when  Joseph Bagnerise to ground out.

One run in the bottom of the fourth helped the Alexandria school to close their deficit to 6-2. An error sparked the Card’s rally, before the Devildogs got Kyle Delaney to strike out to end the threat.

After pushing across one run in the bottom of the seventh, Bishop Ireton faced just a 6-3 deficit.  An RBI double by Selby triggered the Cardianls’ comeback, but with the tying run at the plate, the Devildogs got Sean Workman on a  strikeout to end the ballgame.
