DJO bolts past Cardinals in boys lacrosse

Head Coach Jon Reed enters his third year with the Cardinals

A short-handed Ireton lacrosse team was no match for Bishop O’Connell Thursday on Fannon Field in a one-sided 17-3 pasting by the Knights.

Cole Hogan scored a game-high 7 goals for the Arlington visitors, Joe Kelly had 2, and 8 other Knights scored in the affair.  Alex Duke scored twice for Ireton and Will Chastain added a tally for Ireton.

Hogan opened the scoring for O’Connell just 28 seconds into the contest but Duke responded for the Cardinals 4:38 into the first period to tie the game at 1-1.  From there, what appeared to be a tight game quickly unravelled as the Knights went on a 12-0 run to blow open the contest. A 3-1 advantage after one period grew to a 9-1 halftime, 12-1 after three.

Ireton suffered 19 turnovers to the Knights 11 and were outshot 40-18 in the game. Tommy Schefer recorded 7 saves for O’Connell, while Ryan Baier had 5 for the redbirds.

Bishop O’Connell improves to 6-0, 1-0 on the season while Ireton falls to 3-2, 0-1 in WCAC action.  Easter will bring a break for the Cardinals who return to action on Tuesday, April 9th when the Cambridge Road crew heads to Chevy Chase for a 4pm faceoff with St Johns.

In the nightcap Thursday, the JV boys pulled out a 6-5 overtime win over the Knights.

Hagenston Gem not enough in 1-0 setback at St Johns

Cody Hagenston allowed just one run on Monday at Gibbs Field, but Bishop Ireton couldn’t get the offense going in a 1-0 defeat to St John’s Cadets.  Ireton managed only two hits in the game.

Hagenston was a workhorse on the hill for the Cardinals. Hagenston allowed one earned run, three hits and three walks while striking out three over 6 2/3 innings of work.

Thomas got the win in relief for St John’s, pitching 1 1/3 innings and allowed no runs.  Both ballclubs stand 3-2 in WCAC play heading into the Easter vacation.

Cardinals head to Charleston, SC, for the HITT spring tournament before returning to WCAC action on April 6th at Gonzaga.

Ireton climbs toward WCAC lead with 3-2 extra innings win

Scott Schwartz first-pitch double drove home Corey Phillips to give the Bishop Ireton Cardinals (6-2, 3-1) the lead in the eighth inning and the visitors hung on to beat St. Mary’s Ryken Knights 3-2 on Wednesday in Leonardtown.

“This is a team that won’t win games 10-1, but they also won’t lose ’em 10-1.” commented head coach Mike Gallagher. Indeed, the Ireton final rally was a textbook example of fundamentally sound baseball.  And, over a long season, the baseball gods seem to reward good fundamentals.

Phillips singled to open the eighth. He then went to second on a sacrifice bunt by freshman second baseman Robert Corallo.  Senior Andrew Selby expertly pulled a ground ball to second sending Phillips on the third.  Schwartz then delivered the game-winner to plate the Ireton catcher.  Phillips went a perfect 2-2 at the plate for the Cardinals,  singling in the sixth and eighth innings.

St. Mary’s Ryken Knights’ lineup had no answer for reliever John Todd. Todd came on in relief of Kyle Delaney who worked 5 strong innings giving up a run in the first and second innings.  Todd entered the game in the sixth and held St. Mary’s Ryken hitless over three innings, allowed no earned runs, walked two and struck out two.

The bottom of the first saw St. Mary’s Ryken Knights take an early 1-0 lead when a Carpenter sacrifice fly sent Godard home after a leadoff triple. They increased the lead in the second when a Grimes single send Bonifont home with the Knights’ second run. The Knights starting pitcher, Jarboe held the Cardinals off the scoreboard for 5 innings as he dueled Ireton’s Delaney.

Phillips would start the comeback with a single in the top of the sixth, move on to third courtesy of a pair of passed balls, then Selby’s groundout to third drove home Ireton’s first run of the game. The Cardinals would tie it in the top of the final regulation frame when Joe Bagernise reached on an error, was sacrificed to second by Todd, then scored on a Nick Tangora single to center.

Todd’s three scoreless innings proved to be just what the Cardinals badly needed to gain their third win in the WCAC, moving them into a tie for second, one half-game behind league-leading DeMatha.  Gonzaga, Ireton, and McNamara all sit at 3-1, PVI and St Johns are at 2-2.  Ireton will visit St John’s on Thursday for a rainout makeup game before starting the spring vacation.

The Cardinals head to South Carolina for Easter break baseball in Charleston and return to WCAC action when they visits Gonzaga on Saturday, April 6th. First pitch is set for noon at Hamilton Field.

Cunningham, Larkin Pace Ireton to 21-9 win in Girls Lax

Kelly Larkin (9) scored 5 goals in Ireton's win over PVI Tuesday

Kendell Cunningham and Kelly Larkin each scored 5 goals, Charlotte Sofield contributed a game-high 6 assists as Bishop Ireton (3-2, 1-0) snapped a two-game losing streak and opened the WCAC regular season with a 21-9 win over Paul VI (4-3, 0-1) Tuesday.

It was a homecoming for PVI’s new head coach, Jen Olson, a 2006 Ireton alum and all conference defender for the Cardinals. Olson, hired in January by the Panthers, was a 4-year player for Hofstra while in college.  She has the Panthers on the rise, coming in fresh off an overtime win over Episcopal on Saturday.  There would be no dramatic ending to this matchup however, as the home team scored the game’s first three markers and led 6-1 after little more than 6  minutes of play.

Christine Macey got the Cards on the board in 1:22 into the game, Larkin scored her first goal 68 seconds later. After Bridget Knowles got the Panthers first tally, Larkin scored two more to improve Ireton to 5-1.

The Cardinals would outshoot PVI 21-10 in the first period, to take a 12-6, but not before Olson’s charges scored back-to-back goals a minute a part at the 18 minute mark of the half to draw the visiting Panthers to 8-5.  Following an Ireton timeout, Sofield scored her second goal of the half, with Larkin and Cunningham also scoring to press the advantage back to 11-5.

Ireton held an  11-5 advantage in ground balls for the game, and Oliva Cole recorded 6 saves, many from close range for the redbirds. Hannah Ashby was busy in net for the Panthers with 12 saves while Bridget Knowles led the Fairfax school with 4 goals in the game and a pair of assists.

Kelly Mathews added 4 goals for Ireton, Macey had 3, and Natalie Irwin and Sofield had a pair each for Ireton.

Next up for the Cardinals is an Easter break trip to Long Island and a date with Sacred Heart on April 2. The Cardinals return after the break to face a pair of old foes, with Good Counsel and Holy Cross, last year’s conference finalists on the slate for Ireton as they return to league play.

A win, a pair of lopsided setbacks mark week of lacrosse

Junior Kendall Cunningham stickhandles the ball in Ireton's game against Collegiate School of Richmond.

On March 16, Bishop Ireton(2-2) defeated Collegiate School (0-3) of Richmond 12-8 in the Lady Cardinals’ first home game of the year at Fannon Field. This was the first regular season victory against Collegiate in program history.

Leading the offense, sophomores Kelly Matthews and Charlotte Sofield got four goals and one assist, and three goals and one assist, respectively. Junior Kendall Cunningham, sophomore Christine Macey, and freshmen Kelly Larkin and Maggie Lohrer scored one goal each. Sophomore Isabel Obregon had one goal and two assists. Junior goalie Olivia Cole had six saves.

In a steady ice cold rain, Bishop Ireton squared off at home March 18 against perennially strong Georgetown Visitation (1-0). The visitors got out to an early 8-0 lead, led 11-1 at the half, and played a very aggressive defense the whole game. The final score was 16-3. For Bishop Ireton, Sofield got two goals, Cunningham scored one goal, Obregon had one assist, and Cole had eight saves.

The Lady Cardinals next faced off on March 20 against the nationally ranked St. Stephens-St. Agnes Saints(2-0). Hard lessons were learned as BI lost 16-1 to an overall older, more experienced opponent. There are 14 freshmen and sophomores, four juniors and three seniors on the BI roster. Sophomore Kaitlin Luzik scored the lone BI goal and Cole had eight saves. Bishop Ireton’s valiant effort was marred by early yellow cards which forced the team to play a 6×7 defense for about half the game.

The Lady Cardinals next game is against WCAC foe Paul VI at Fannon Field on March 26 at 4:00 p.m. Other key upcoming WCAC games include BI visiting Good Counsel on April 10 and hosting (2-0)Holy Cross on April 13.

Softball earns Split in North-South Challenge in Richmond

All tourney team includes,(L to R) Susie Rhodes, Heather Pearson

The Lady Cardinal Softball team traveled to Richmond and teamed with Northern Virginia rivals Paul VI and St. Stephens/Saint Agnes to win the First Annual North vs. South Softball Challenge against Collegiate, St Catherine’s and Brunswick Academy representing the state’s southern schools.  Ireton split a Saturday double header, defeating Collegiate 12-2 in five innings before losing a close game to Brunswick Academy 4-3.

In game one, Ireton jumped out to a quick 4-0 first inning lead on a pair of doubles by Sarah Howell and Clara Boggs and a triple by Heather Pearson.  The hot bats continued in the second inning with singles by Pearson and Megan Sullivan combined with a Susie Rhodes double pushing the lead to 6 runs.  Kathleen Walsh also picked up a hit and the squad played error free defense behind Rhodes and her 8 strikeouts as the team cruised to the 12-2, 10-run rule final.

A five inning victory allowed junior pitcher Susie Rhodes to return to pitch the second game of the double header as the red birds faced a talented Brunswick Academy team.  Playing small ball, Brunswick jumped out to a quick 2-run lead in the first.  Ireton answered in the third when Maggie Coyle raced home from first on a Heather Pearson triple. Brunswick Academy answered with their next at bat, putting up 2 more runs and a three run lead.  Ireton came back in the 5th with singles by Maria Manzek, Clara Boggs, Susie Rhodes, and Megan Sullivan cutting the lead to 4-3 but would get no closer.

Susie Rhodes pitched 12 strong innings over the afternoon, recording 15 strikeouts.  Heather Pearson went 6 for 8 at the plate including 2 triples and a double.  The two juniors and classmate Megan Sullivan were named to the all-tournament team.

“The girls played very well,” commented head coach Terri Pearson, “It was great to see the team fight back in that second game after getting behind early.”  The Cardinals are scheduled to travel to Seton on Monday afternoon and host Holy Cross at Luckett field on Wednesday before heading to Myrtle Beach for a five-game tournament over spring break.

Track and Field Prepares for 2013

Senior Nicole Bond enters the season as the top rated private school 200m sprinter.

Coach Rita Williams returns to the helm of the Cardinal track and field program with a greater familarity with the Ireton track landscape. Once again assisted by Glen Evelyn and Brad Byrnes, the team has a full schedule of mid-Atlantic meets, highlighted by their visit to the historic Penn Relays in Philadelphia.

The Cardinals have a large, if young squad for 2013, with over 70 student-athletes actively participating and 30% of those from the freshmen class and more than half participating in their first track & field season. This youth does not necessarily mean the Alexandria school is short of talent. Coach Byrnes see some promising mid-distance runners in Isabelle Wilcox and Capri Puglise on the girls side and for the boys returning members Duke Roach, Michael Logrande join rookie Aaron Ault.

Coach Evelyn’s sprint unit on the girls’ side has returnee Nicole Bond , who is listed as the #1 returner in the 200m for Virginia private schools, and Ireton will sprinkle in rookies Gabrielle Hall, Stephanie Lin , and letterwinner Ileana Gutierrez. On the boys side, Brandon Williams-Price and Antony Mondragon are the foundation of the sprint lineup. They are joined by a number of new faces, including Paul Poling, Chris Lantz, Nick Knezevich, Patrick Reilly, and Sean Hurd just to mention a few. The Cardinals’ field events participants include thrower Weslie Young and Isabel Parks, and for boys Owen Beals, John Holbrook, and Joshua Estevez.

Head coach Williams is smiling more this season and just waiting for when it all comes together. The outdoor track program invites all to come and support;  see how hard the athletes work to represent BI, by attending their 1st annual intra squad meet on Monday April 8 immediately after school.

JV Cardinals Smack Wolves

The Bishop Ireton Junior Varsity Men’s Lacrosse Cardinals dedicated their game against Pope John Paul the Great (PJPG) HS to their teammate, Sophomore Middie Mitchell Wooten, who was injured during the first game of the season and was hospitalized for seven days.   The Cardinals made good on their pledge, played a complete game and earned a 13-0 victory on Fannon Field.

The Cardinals won all face offs in the 1st quarter, four by Freshman Mid Cristian Vasquez and one by Soph Mid Andrew Grabowski.  The offense controlled the ball the entire quarter and never allowed a PJPG possession.  At 9:40, Frosh Attackman Devon Reed fed Frosh Mid Tony Caffi cutting into the crease for the 1st BI score.  Soph Attack Jimmy Grant scored three minutes later with an assist from Caffi.  Frosh Attack Bryce Smith fed Reed for a score at 5:24.  Frosh Mid Brendan Bewick fed Grant on the crease for another score at 3:14.  Reed scored at 1:43 with an assist from Grant for a 5-0 lead after one quarter.

The Cardinal Defense allowed two shots in the 2nd quarter, resulting in one save by Frosh Goalie Ryan Verducci.  Grant added an unassisted goal at 7:47.  Smith fed Reed at 3:29 to close out the 1st half scoring and take a 7-0 lead.

When the offense slowed in the 3rd quarter, Frosh Long Pole Harrison Mertins ran a one man clear and scored at 3:58 to extend the lead.  Reed added a solo goal at 55.8.  Verducci contributed 3 saves. The Cardinals led 9-0 entering the 4th quarter.  All team members played in the second half.

Frosh Long Pole Louie Galdos ran a one man clear and fed Grant on the crease to extend the lead.  The Cardinals took 6 shots during a 2 minute Extra Man Opportunity, but did not score.  Reed added another goal at 3:20 assisted by Smith.  Frosh Mid Jack Retcher fed Kelly on the crease for a 12-0 lead.  25 seconds later, Frosh Mid and Hockey player Evan Frischkorn slapped a loose ball on the crease into the back of the net for the final score and a 13-0 margin of victory.  Verducci faced more shots in the second half but preserved the shut out.  The BIJVMLax Cardinals will all sign the game ball and present it to Mitchell Wooten, when he can receive visitors.

Next week the Cardinals travel to PVI on Tuesday and host O’Connell on Holy Thursday.
