Sullivan steps down, Leon named Cards’ girls soccer coach

Citing increased demands on her time as a mother, a club coach, and now with the University of Maryland’s women’s program, 2010 WCAC coach of the year, Marianna Sullivan stepped down as the Cardinals’ head coach for varsity girls’  soccer after three seasons.  Veteran coach Gino Leon, three-year JV head coach at Bishop Ireton, was named to lead the varsity beginning July 1st, according to athletic director, Bill Simmons.

“Coach Sullivan has done a tremendous job in her three years.” praised the Ireton AD. “Her peers agreed by selecting her as the WCAC coach-of-the-year last fall.”

Simmons explained that Sullivan cited her commitments to a pair of high school children, including a national-level soccer playing daughter, club soccer responsibilities, and newly acquired duties with the Maryland Terrapins women’s program.

“I respect that she recognized that she demands a great deal from her players but that she expects even more from herself.  When it was apparent to her that she could not make the level of commitment she believed our program deserved, she immediately came to me and submitted her resignation in order to give us time to be ready for what should be a terrific season this fall.” said the Cardinals’ director of athletics .  “And, I agreed with her completely when she strongly recommended assistant coach, Gino Leon, take her place.”

Leon, of Great Falls, Virginia, is an experienced player and coach on every level prior to joining the Cardinals before the 2008 sesason.  He has just completed his first season this spring as the varsity head coach in Fairfax County.  He holds a USSF National B license and a NSCAA Goalkeeping license.

“Besides being a technically superior coach, he is a personable guy, the girls know him, respect him, and he knows them and knows their ‘game’.  With a core group of exceptional seniors coming back next year, I wanted to mitigate the turbulence of  a coaching change.  The fact that Coach Leon is exceptionally qualified was really a blessing, he is definitely up to the task” according to Simmons.

The Cardinals finished the 2010 campaign 10-8-2 and in the upper division of the WCAC, advancing to the semifinals of the Conference’s championship tournament.

Rupp, Zeigler Named Division I VISAA all State

Junior Maddy Zeigler (1) and Senior Sarah Rupp (2) were announced as 2011 All State performers by the VISAA.

The Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association (VISAA) has released its 2011 first team, all State Division I selections for girls lacrosse this week and senior Sarah Rupp and junior Maddy Zeigler were among the 12 players selected.  The northern region dominated the selections with St Stephens collecting four players, Episcopal a pair, Potomac and Flint Hill one each while Collegiate School of Richmond landed two players on the list.  The Saints’ Michele Phillips was honored as the player of the year by the Association.

Rupp, a senior bound for the University of California, Davis, was a tri-captain for the Cardinals and a two-time Washington Catholic Athletic Conference first-team player as a midfielder.  Coach Rick Sofield called Rupp the “quarterback of our offense” and the speedster responded with 28 assists on the year to go with 49 goals.

A partner on the WCAC all conference first  team, Zeigler was a beneficiary of many of those Rupp assists as she scored a team-leading 89 goals on the year for the 12-8 Cardinals.  Her goal total placed her 11th on the list of scorers in the Washington Post and also 11th on the total assist list herself with 41 for the Ireton attacker.

Sofield’s Cardinals finished third in the WCAC with a 6-2 mark, and qualified as the number 6 seed in the VISAA’s championship tournament, losing in the quarterfinals to finalist, Collegiate School.

Track teams close year 5th in WCAC championships

Junior Anna Wissler has threatened the School record in the 800 meters with teammate recordholder Marin Nolan all season

Bishop Ireton completed a successful 2011 spring track and field season at the competitive WCAC track and field championships on the campus of Good Counsel High School in Olney, Maryland Saturday, May 21st.   Despite forecasts of the end of the world, Good Counsel rode the Ireton 4×400 finish to edge rival Gonzaga for the boys’ crown while Elizabeth Seton outdistanced the pack to claim the girls’ title.

The Cardinals scored most often with familiar faces on the girls’ side with junior sprinter Nicole Bond capturing a third place (:12.8) in the 100 meter dash and a 7th place (:26.45)in the 200 meters.  Teammates senior Marin Nolan and junior Anna Wissler placed 5th (2:25.48) and 7th (2:26.95) in the 800 meters while Madeline Thomas scored 8 points with a second place in the 3200 meter run (11:43.47) and a third in the 1600 meters (5:19.99).

Senior Shannon Gordon captured a third in the 300 meter hurdles in a time of :47.13 and a fifth in the 100 meter hurdle event (:15.89) for Ireton. The gals 4×100 relay of Illeana Gutierrez, Katrina Guillou, Ricca Graham, and Bond earned a point with an 8th place finish in :52.11 and the always competitive 4×400 team snared a second place in a time of 4:13.20. That crew of Gordon, Graham, Nolan, and Bond squeaked by Good Counsel by a second, but no one was catching Bishop McNamara with a winning time of 4:06.55 in the event.  Wissler, Thomas, Nolan, and senior Joanna Faletti garnered a 5th for the Ireton 4×800 meters in a time of 10:09.74.

The field events saw junior Hannah Thomas capture 8th place in the high jump with a leap of 4’8″, but otherwise the Alexandria school was shut out in the field event scoring in Olney over the two-day affair.

The boys’ team also finished 5th, but it was their 4th place finish in the 4×400 that got the Good Counsel Falcons on their feet as much as the Ireton faithful.  Good Counsel and Gonzaga came to this final event dead even and the Cardinals 3 second advantage over the Eagles in the event propelled the Falcons to their conference championship by 2 points.

Senior Michael Andersen finished 5th in the 400 meter dash in a time of :50.71 to earn 4 team points and Liam O’Connor grabbed 3 more with a 6th place in the 3200 meter run (9:56.87).  The Alexandria Sportsman’s Club track athlete of the year, BJ Townley placed 6th in the 110 meter hurdles ( :15.76) and 8th (:42.31) in the 300 hurdles for Ireton  while the Cardinals’ 4×100 meter relay team of Brandon Price, Sam Ferrara, Andrew Baehre, and Moses Webb earned a 7th place finish in a time of :46.24.

The Cardinals 4×400 relay of Ferrara, Townley, Arthur Stier, and Andersen toured the cinders in a time of 3:31.20 to earn the 4th place finish, while the 4×800 gang of Stier, Ferrara, Daniel Burns, and Kevin Moran belted Gonzaga as well for a third place, nearly 23 seconds behind winner, DeMatha, but still 6 seconds better than the Eagles and nearly 10 seconds faster than O’Connell’s Knights.

Stier’s jump of 5’2″ snared Ireton a pair of team points with his 7th place, Moses Webb leaped 19′ 8″ for 5th in the long jump, and Townley went 40’7.5″ for a 4th in the triple jump event to round out the scoring in the boys’ field events.

Rowing sets new School standards at Stotesbury

Hard work led to top performances in the Cardinals annual trip to the famous Stotesbury Regatta in Philadelphia

In their final race of the year this past week at the Stotesbury Cup Regatta in Philadelphia Pennsylvania – the largest high school regatta in the world with 176 participating schools – the Bishop Ireton Cardinals achieved new heights as a program. The Varsity Women advanced, for the first time in school history, to the semi-final round in the Girls Senior 8+ competition. They placed 15th in the Time Trial and then posted the 14th fastest time of the Semi-Finals where they did not advance. This success marks the first occasion a Bishop Ireton Crew has advanced to the second day in a Varsity event.

The Cardinal Men placed 25th overall while posting the fastest time a Bishop Ireton boat has pulled in our school’s history of attending the Stotesbury Cup. The team also brought a Girl’s Second 8+, Boys Junior 4+, Girls Freshmen 8+, and Boys Freshmen 4x – none of which made it to the second day, but all raced hard and well.

“I am particularly proud of what the girls [Varsity boat] achieved today. They deserve all the success they get,” exclaimed Head Coach Eric Gehrke, “because they worked very hard all year and kept their sights forward on their goals and not backwards on our teams past at Stotesbury. I am also looking forward to our future as the speed of all our boats this Spring shows we can hopefully continue our success into the next year.”

Cards Upend Saints 6-4, Ousted by DJO in State semifinals

O'Connell's sophomore second baseman Vivian Angirsani can't get the throw as Cardinals reach second safely.

The Bishop Ireton Softball team defeated  cross town rival St Stephens/St Agnes Tuesday 6-4 to advance to the semi final game of the Virginia Independent School Athletic Association championship. Strong defense, timely hitting and aggressive base running were the keys to this big win.  The season ended however, with Bishop O’Connell’s 4th consecutive win over the Cardinals in the semifinals in Petersburg. It was the Knights final win of the year as they fell the next day 5-2 to Liberty Christian in the championship game.

Ireton jumped out to an early 3-0 lead over St Stephens as lead off batter Micki  Crouch took the game’s second pitch deep to center field for a triple.  On the next at bat, Heather Pearson’s hard shot to the pitcher was fielded cleanly but then thrown over the first baseman’s head allowing Crouch to score and Pearson to advance to second base.  Debbie Ward then collected her first of 4 hits on the day, driving in Pearson making the score 2-0.  Pressuring the defense, Ward worked her away around the bases on a stolen base, a dropped third strike and then scored on a wild pitch.  SSA came back in their half of the first with a walk and a double to make the score 3-1.

The Cardinals continued to pressure the SSA defense in the second inning.  Emily Quinn and Caroline Boddie used their quick feet to reach base on consecutive bunts and advanced through stolen bases and wild pitches.  Debbie Ward then drove them home with a double to left field extending the lead 5-1.

Pitcher Micki Crouch then settled in striking out the side in the second and relying upon good defense behind her to keep SSA off the board until the 6th inning.  She would go on to finish the day with 9 strikeouts while allowing only 4 hits.   SSSA rallied in the 6th with a pair of singles, a walk and a fielding error to score three and make the score 5-4.  The rally was stopped when catcher Meghan Pearson nailed an SSSA baserunner at second base as she tried to advance on a throw to home from the outfield.

To lead off the final inning, Micki Crouch smacked the ball to the centerfield fence and sprinted around the bases for an inside the park home run making the score 6-4. The Saints threatened again in the bottom of the seventh.   After a quick first out, the lead off batter reached second base with a hit to right field.  Then with the Saint’s big bats on deck, the number two hitter put a bunt down the first base line.  Crashing first baseman Katie Kiesner fielded the ball cleanly and with great poise threw it to a covering Susie Rhodes for the second  out of the inning.  Coming off the bag, Rhodes alertly spotted the Saint’s runner racing for home and froze her on the basepath.  The trapped runner dove back to third  where she was greeted with a hard tag from Heather Pearson  for the final out of the game.  The Saint’s  big bats never got to the plate.

Selby, 4 others honored for WCAC baseball

Sophomore Andrew Selby earned 2d team, all-WCAC honors in centerfield in 2011

Sophomore Andrew Selby was selected by the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference  as a second team, all-conference outfielder, while teammates Cody Hagenston, Corey Phillips, Wes Jenkins, and Brian Lewis were named to the league’s honorable mention list.

Selby was selected the 2011 Cardinals’ most valuable player.  With a .429 batting average in WCAC play, the versatile Selby switched from center field to shortstop midway through the season.  He belted three home runs and led Ireton in 9 offensive categories.

Another super soph, Cody Hagenston, was the ace of the staff on the hill for the Cardinals.  He posted an impressive 2.52 ERA in WCAC play in  5 starts in WCAC, all into the 5th inning, making quality starts for the redbirds.

Ireton’s third sophomore honoree, Corey Phillips, started behind the plate for the Cardinals, hitting .321 on the year, second on the team.  The durable Phillips played every inning behind the plate.

Senior Wes Jenkins was a  Co-captain and starting 2nd basemen for the Cambridge Road school. The steady infielder was strong presence up the middle for Ireton and a leader on the field for the Cardinals. He is headed to Campbell University to play baseball next year.

Senior Brian Lewis, Bishop Ireton’s other co-captain started at shortstop and 1st base this year.  Lewis,  a 3-year starter for the Cardinals, was a veteran leader and an anchor on the infield.  He and  Jenkins are key positions to be replaced, but Coach Mike Gallagher has a strong stable of players returning to make the 2012 campaign a bright one for Bishop Ireton.

Collegiate Ends Ireton’s girls lax season, 13-7

The 2011 Varsity Lacrosse team finished with the Progam's 8th straight winning season, 12-9. The seniors graduated having never finished lower than third in the WCAC, losing only to Holy Cross and Good Counsel in their WCAC careers.

After losing a thrilling 14-13 regular season contest to Collegiate School in Richmond, the Cardinals were optimistic about their chances as they returned to visit the Cougars in the quarterfinal matchup in the VISAA’s Division I postseason tournament.

Goalkeeper Maggie Covert was sharp in goal with nearly ten saves on the day and the first half half followed the script as the home squad clung to a narrow 4-3 advantage.  The second half would be a markedly different story however.

The Cardinals struggled throughout the contest to win draws, a critical component for success. They won but 6, losing 17 and making 16 turnovers, many in the final half as the green and gold third-seeded Richmond crew widened the lead to 9-3 to remove any doubt as to the eventual outcome.  Ireton scored 7 goals, but managed only 11 shots on the day.

Both clubs substituted liberally in the last 5 minutes of the contest as Coach Rick Sofield gave his senior reserves their final minutes as Cardinals. Those substitutes rallied the ‘birds with three goals but it was simply too little, too late.

Bishop Ireton ended the 2011 campaign 12-9, 6-2 in the WCAC, under Coach Sofield, his first season with the Alexandria school.  Seven seniors depart the program including Maggie Covert, co-captain  Sarah Rupp, Bridget Reilly, Megan Moseley, co-captain Sarah Fyffe, co-captain Katherine Simmons, and Oliva O’Sullivan.  But the Cardinals will return 15 letterwinners, including first team all conference attack, Maddie Zeigler and seven other Cardinals cited for all conference honors for the 2012 season.

Six Cardinals Selected to WCAC, VISAA teams in Softball

Junior Micki Crouch was Ireton's lone first team, all state and all WCAC selectee, though the Cardinals had 5 others recognized by the organizations.

Senior Co-Captains Caroline Boddie and Meghan Pearson, juniors Micki Crouch and Debbie Ward along with freshmen Heather Pearson and Susie Rhodes were selected by the WCAC softball coaches for post season accolades.  Micki Crouch was also named first team All State by the Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association’s softball executive board.

Named to the WCAC first team was  lead off batter and starting pitcher Micki Crouch  who during the regular season amassed 157 strikeouts, averaging 1.3 strikeouts per inning pitched and an earned run average of 3.0.  She was ranked 3rd in number of strikeouts in the Washington Post rankings and pitched a no hitter against St Johns.  Offensively, Micki boasted a .419 batting average and led the team in  doubles and triples while striking out only once the whole season.

Debbie Ward and Heather Pearson were named to the All-WCAC second team.  While playing a steady center field, Ward hit for both average and power, boasting a .452 batting average, a .500 on base percentage and an .822 slugging percentage while leading the team in home runs.  Freshmen short stop Heather Pearson led the team in batting average at .456, total number of hits and runs scored while posting a .91 fielding percentage.

Seniors Caroline Boddie and Meghan Pearson along with Freshman Susie Rhodes received honorable mention honors from the coaches.  The seniors sustained contribution to the program and leadership was acknowledged to be a significant factors to the team’s success this season.  Susie Rhodes’ sensational freshman season featured a .443 batting average, 8 doubles and 23 RBI’s and earned the well deserved recognition of the WCAC coaches.

In praising the award winners, first year head coach Terri Pearson added, “Softball will always be a team sport and we all recognize that no individual can enjoy success without the backing of her teammates.  Getting 6 players recognized is a win for the whole program.  From the JV squad through the varsity, from the coaching staff to the administration, we all share in the success of these student athletes.”

Chastain, Darville, Attiliis Cited in All Conference Boys Lax

Junior Joe Darville, Ireton's leading scorer in 2011, was recognized as honorably mentioned by WCAC coaches.

Limestone College-bound senior Robert Chastain led the Cardinals’ contingent of three boys lacrosse players honorably mentioned in the coaches’ balloting for the 2011 WCAC all conference balloting.  Chastain, the lone senior,  was joined by juniors Brandon Attiliis  and Joe Darville.

Chastain, a Cardinal captain, played 4 varsity seasons for Bishop Ireton and played on the Fuze summer travel club program.  He was recognized last year as an honorable mention player as well.  Chastain, paced the Cardinals in ground balls and turnovers caused for the season just completed.  He played his best against the toughest opponents.

Brandon Atiliis, a junior with a team-leading 19 goals, as well as 11 assists, was named honorable mention by the league’s coaches for his strong play at the midfield position as well as some time at attack.  The Alexandria native and only junior captain, he will be a key building block in Coach Jon Reed’s plans for the 2012 Cardinals.

Finally, Joe Darville, an aggressive midfielder was an honorably mentioned awardee for Bishop Ireton in the 2011 campaign.  The rugged junior led Ireton in total points with 13 goals and 25 assists for 38 points (goals plus assists) for the 2011 campaign, including four assists against Archbishop Carroll and a pair of goals and assists against Bishop McNamara.  He was the “quarterback” of the offense and another key part of the 2012 plan for the Cardinals.

Track claims boys’ Catholic title, girls second

Junior BJ Townley, pictured here at the Draper Relays, was everywhere for the Cardinals in their Catholic state championship-winning performance Saturday in Richmond.

Bishop Ireton’s boys’ track and field team defended their Catholic State championship over a 9-team field  on Saturday and the girls snared a runner-up team trophy on a busy day at the Abbey of Benedictine High School in Richmond.  The boys edged Pope John Paul the Great for their second consecutive title, while the girls finished behind Bishop O’Connell.

Junior BJ Townley took the boys’ team almost literally on his shoulders, scoring 30 points in individual events and running in a winning relay team to chip in a critical 10 more, scoring in six events, and breaking his own record in the 110 hurdle event.  The versatile Townley, a 2011 track athlete of the year in Alexandria, placed 5th in the long jump, second in the high jump, won the triple jump and 110 meter hurdles (School record time :15.87), grabbed a second in the 300 hurdles, and ran a leg of the winning 4×400 relay event.

The boys received help from depth in a number of events, as Michael Andersen won the 400 meter race in School record time of :51.58 and the 800 meter run.  Almost as important, however, Sam Ferrara finished second and Khyree Robinson 5th to collect 20 team points in a single event.  Arthur Stier chased Andersen home in the 800 to take second by a mere .01 seconds behind the Ireton senior and nearly 3 seconds ahead of Jay Carroll of O’Connell in third.

In the high jump, Stier chipped in 2 points with 5th, Andrew Baehre a 5th in the 110 meter hurdles, while Moses Webb earned a third place in both the 100 meter and 200 meter sprints.  Liam O’Connor ran a 10:19.47 to win the 3200 meter race by more than 11 seconds and came back with a 4:44.09, good for third in the 1600 meter event.

The girls’ team likewise displayed athleticism and depth in their performance in the Catholic state meet.  Senior Shannon Gordon did everything but drive the bus to Richmond for the Cardinal girls Saturday.   Much like Townley, Gordon scored 24 team  points in five events.  She won the 100 meter hurdles and was second in the 300 hurdles, grabbed a 4th place finish in the long jump, and a sixth in the triple jump and 200 meter dash.

Junior Hannah Thomas jumped 4’8″  for a third place in the high jump, while classmates Nicole Bond (:12.99) and Katrina Guillou (:13.63) finished second and fourth respectively in the 100 meter dash.  Bond and junior Anna Wissler combined for another second and fifth place in the 400 meters for the redbirds.  Wissler came back to battle senior teammate Marin Nolan in the 800, where Nolan claimed a third at 2:28.12 and Wissler a 4th at 2:34.48.  Senior Madeline Thomas, another Alexandria track athlete of the year winner, ran a personal best 5:17.39 in the 1600 meters, just a second off the School record, for third behind O’Connell’s  Sarah McCarthy and only .03 behind second place Alison Dommel of DJO. The Radford-bound Thomas was a second in the 3200 meter race, again chasing McCarthy across the finish line.

Ireton’s relay teams placed well. On the girls side, the 4×800 relay (Marin Nolan, Joanna Faletti, Kaitlyn McNutt, Megan Reilly) finished second to the champion Knights, in 10:43.12, and again they were runners-up to PVI in the 4×100 relay(Ricca Graham, Ileana Gutierrez, Katrina Guillou, Loren Gant in :55.83).  The gals did win the 4×400 relay (Marin Nolan, Ricca Graham, Anna Wissler, and Sarah Hersey) in a time of 4:24.10 ahead of PVI, DJO, and JPGHS.

The boys 4×800 (Arthur Stier, Dan Burns, Stephen Gottlieb, Kevin Moran) took a second behind O’Connell, another second in the 4×100 (Moses Webb, Brandon Price, Sam Ferrara, Andrew Baehre) to John Paul the Great, but like the girls, won their signature event, the 4×400 (Mike Andersen, Arthur Stier, BJ Townley and Sam Ferrara) in a time of 3:31.09, a full 7 seconds ahead of Bishop Sullivan.

“We are thrilled to repeat as boys’ championships, and proud of the performance of our girls to finish second.” said the Cardinal head coach, Mike Resnick.  “We were aiming for both titles, but it was a competitive meet and I think we are ready for some great times in the WCAC meet this coming week.”   The Washington Catholic Athletic Conference will host their annual track and field championships on Thursday, May 19th and Saturday, May 21st at Good Counsel High School in Olney, Maryland. With a number of Conference schools hosting proms, Friday will be an off day in the unusual schedule for this year’s event.
