Bishop Ireton girls soccer lands 7 all conference honorees

Seniors Adrienne Maday (10) and Kenza Alaoui (19) were among 7 players recognized by WCAC in year-ending awards.

Bishop Ireton’s  girls soccer team saw four players honored by the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference (WCAC) this week when the first and second team all league teams were announced. Three other Cardinals were honorably mentioned by the WCAC as well.

The 10-3-3 Cardinals landed senior midfielder Adrienne Maday and sophomore forward Lilly Weber on the prestigious first team, all conference list of the top 15 players.  Maday is a repeat honoree but the speedy sophomore Weber makes her first appearance on the first team.  “Chauch Maday could legitimately be the player of the year” said Coach Gino Leon. “I know there are a number of exceptional players in this conference, but I think Maday is right there with them.”

Another senior defender Natalia Barrow was selected for the league’s second team as was the sophomore goalkeeper, Amy Krotine.   Says Leon of the Naval Academy-bound Barrow, “Natalia is a great talent, she plays the defensive end of the field brilliantly and she was one of the key ingredients of our team.”

Ireton also saw the Conference honorably mention junior midfielder Grace Hamilton, senior midfielder Kenza Alaoui, and sophomore forward Grace Hersey.

The legendary Jim Bruno of Good Counsel was named the Coach of the Year by his peers and his senior forward, Imani Dorsey was the coaches’ pick for Player of the Year.

Comeback Win propels Girls Soccer to WCAC Semifinals, 3-2

Bishop Ireton's Grace Hamilton (above) got the game winning goal in a 3-2 come from behind win Tuesday in the WCAC quarterfinal game with St Johns.

Perhaps the 6-1 win over St Johns on Senior Day gave extra motivation to the Cadets a week later as they returned to the scene of the drubbing with their season on the line in the WCAC quarterfinals Tuesday.  Whatever it was, the quarterfinal was a physical and emotional battle for the teams as the 4th seeded Cardinals rallied from a 2-1 deficit to escape with a 3-2 win and earned a date with defending champions, Good Counsel, Thursday in Olney.

Bishop Ireton drew first blood after defender Natalia Barrow turned back a pair of strong plays by St Johns in the Cardinals’ end of the field. Grace Hersey set up Lilly Weber and the 2013 all conference performer didn’t disappoint in the game’s 12th minute with a goal to stake Ireton to a 1-0 advantage.

The Cadets answered  midway through the half with a blast from outside the box that the Cardinals’ Amy Krotine, possibly screened,  simply couldn’t reach. The Cadets had seized the momentum and, with a physical style of play that seemingly frustrated the home team, grabbed their first lead with another cannon ball from long range early in the game’s second half.  The game then settled into a back-and-forth struggle as Ireton attempted to wrestle the momentum back from the red-shirted visitors.

Senior midfielder Kenza Alaoui started the Ireton comeback at the midpoint of the second half when she drove into St John’s territory and rang a shot off the goalpost, a sign of things to come. Capri Puglise later sent another long, high, laser shot over the outstretched hands of the Cadet’s goalie and into the corner of the goal to even the score at 2 all.  Krotine would keep the Cardinals even with a diving save and the Cardinals countered with a nifty series of passes, ending with a Sabrina Leoncio pass to Grace Hamilton for the eventual game winner.

“The girls showed a great deal of character today.” said Coach Gino Leon, “we didn’t play our best game, but give St Johns credit, they played very hard, very physically, and they obviously didn’t think this game was out of reach. Now we go back to Good Counsel.”

The Cardinals do indeed return to Olney, where they tied the Falcons during the regular season.  In that contest, the WCAC’s player of the year, Imani Dorsey, was absent. The Cardinals know that won’t be the case this time. They also know the last time Good Counsel failed to make the finals it was due to a visit by Bishop Ireton to Olney for a semifinal contest with a heavily favored defending WCAC champion.  Game time Thursday is expected to be 4pm at Kane Stadium.  Holy Cross visits Bishop O’Connell in the other semifinal. The championship is set for Saturday evening at the Maryland SoccerPlex in Germantown, Maryland.  Girls championship in the complex’s main stadium is set for 6pm, admission is $10.

Eagles outlast Cardinals in Penalty Kicks for win

Throughout the scoreless struggle with Gonzaga in the WCAC quarterfinals, no one played better than the Cardinals' keeper, first team, all conference senior Andrew Perham (above).

When it was over, there was a momentary silence, with only jubilant white jerseyed players hugging. Fans as well as players seemed emotionally drained as the realization sunk in as to what had just happened. Gonzaga and Bishop Ireton struggled for 80 minutes of regulation play, 10 more of overtime with neither team finding the back of the net. Suddenly, in a quick flurry of penalty kicks, Gonzaga emerged with a 4-2 advantage, enough for a trip to the semifinals in the WCAC quarterfinal contest at Long Bridge Field in Arlington Tuesday.

The game was a struggle from the opening whistle until the final shot nestled in the back of the net.  Gonzaga immediately pressed the offensive and opened the game with the Cardinals counterpunching in their own end, going minutes without the ball crossing midfield. Still the visitors maintained their poise, the Eagles had few good scoring chances and all conference goal keeper Andrew Perham patrolled the box early cleaning up everything.  Bishop Ireton then pushed the ball into the home squad end, getting some openings, but also finding the Gonzaga defense a smothering one and open looks hard to come by.  Halftime found the teams knotted at 0-0.

The second half began as the first half did, Gonzaga on the attack, this time getting more chances, but still Perham slammed the door on each opportunity and the Ireton defense shadowed the Eagle forwards relentlessly.  The second-seeded Eagles had a golden opportunity when a direct kick just outside the box gave the Jesuit school a juicy opportunity, but the Cardinals “wall” knocked the kick to the corner. Shortly afterwards, Gonzaga had a flurry of activity deep in the Ireton box, one shot caroming off a Cardinal and the rebound rocketed toward the net only to see the lanky Ireton senior net minder shoot out a leg and rob the Eagles of a sure goal.

The Eagles continued to press but the Ireton team refused to fold and in the 66th minute the momentum seemed to turn as it was Ireton that became the hunter and developed scoring opportunities of their own, but no goals.

Overtime for the clubs seemed to fly by and the 5-minute sessions produced little in the way of scoring opportunities, bringing the marathon battle to a shoot out conclusion.

Freshman Austin Smith opened  the penalty kick portion for Ireton with a nifty rocket low and to the keeper’s left corner of the goal. Gonzaga matched shot with a blast past Perham, Preston Haugh followed with another tally, again to the keeper’s left and low. With the Eagles alternating goalkeepers in the PK session, Thomas Keane and Tyler Olmstead, the Eagles’ goalies may have found a trend or simply been lucky.   Junior Nick Ducceschi shot left and low and the sprawling Eagle keeper snared the kick.  After  Gonzaga converted their third kick, senior Spencer Amarantides looked to go low again for Ireton and again the keeper’s sprawling effort resulted in a save.  Perham was in a perilous way at this point, the Cardinals would need saves on the final two Gonzaga shots while Ireton would need a pair of scores to send the PK round to a sixth shooter and possibly sudden victory.  With the booming shot slamming into the net, the Cardinals’ WCAC hopes vanished in the titanic struggle.  The teams battled to a 1-1 draw in the 80 minutes of regulation during their regular season encounter, each team scoring on a penalty.  After 90 more minutes of play, neither team had solved the other in the tournament encounter in Arlington.

For the Cardinals (6-8-2) they take a breather before heading to Richmond as an 11th seed to play the 6th seeded St Christopher’s School at 3pm on Friday in the VISAA’s Division I boys soccer championship tournament.  The Eagles (8-6-3) advance to the semifinals on Thursday when Coach Scott Waller’s charges will host WCAC Coach of the Year Matt Leiva and the PVI Panthers.

Bishop Ireton explodes in opening round soccer win, 7-0

Senior Diego Rosende (6) was one of seven Cardinals to score in their opening round win in WCAC playoff action.

Coach Jon Norem’s boys soccer team opened the 2013 WCAC playoffs in grand style with a dominating 7-0 win over Archbishop Carroll on Monday at Ireton’s Fannon Field.

The Cardinals didn’t allow a Lion shot on goal until the second half when the game was all but decided.  Senior Andrew Perham and freshman Matt Poling combined to whitewash the visitors from Washington, DC, each keeper seeing a half of action.  The Cardinals poured 17 shots on goal in the game, the Lions managed a pair.

Kyle Delaney found Joey Faddoul in the game’s 11th minute and the honorably mentioned, all conference sophomore staked the Cardinals to a 1-0 lead. Faddoul would earn an assist moments later when senior, second team all conference performer, Spencer Amarantides made it 2-0.  Three minutes later, Preston Haugh, another  second teamer in the WCAC made it 3-0 and the home team was rolling.

Junior Henson Webre opened the second half scoring to balloon the lead to 4-0.  Diego Rosende, Nick Ducceschi, and Gabby Sampaio rounded out the scoring for the home team, who now faces the perennial powerhouse, #2 seeded Gonzaga on Tuesday. Kickoff is 3pm on Long Bridge Field #3.  The winner advances to the semifinals on Thursday.  In the regular season matchup, the teams tied at 1-1, each converting a penalty kick in regulation. That time there was no overtime, in this matchup there will be a winner.

Cardinals’ late drive upends Potomac School, 20-17

Cardinal defense allowed few yards and held the area's top rusher, Jalen Broome, in check, as well as quarterback Kevin Havermann (18) to win on the road.

In a defensive battle on a picture perfect day for football, Bishop Ireton used a late scoring drive to dampen a homecoming/senior day gala Saturday in McLean and earn their third win of the season 20-17 over the Panthers of Potomac School. The Cardinals improved to 3-6 on the year while the Panthers lost for the second weekend in a row to fall to 6-2 on the campaign.

Ireton moved the ball well in their opening  only to be stopped by a Josh Hansan interception on the Panthers’ 3 yard line.  Neither club could generate any offense on their subsequent drives, leading to the game’s first break. With Potomac deep in their own territory, junior Josh Ammon blocked a Panther punt and sophomore Charlie Ladd chased the pigskin down in the end zone for the game’s first touchdown.  While the teams would continue to move the ball up and down the field, no one got on the scoreboard until Ireton rode a 35 yard gain by Andrew Latrash deep into Panther territory.  With the clock winding down, the drive stalled and senior Matt Bocchi’s 27 yard field goal gave the Cardinals a 10-0 lead at halftime.

Potomac got on the scoreboard with 2:11 remaining in the third quarter when Kevin Havermann tossed a 2o yard scoring pass to Hansan in the right corner of the Ireton end zone to cut the Cardinals advantage to 10-7.  The visiting redbirds would add 3 more on a Bocchi field goal at 11:20 to play in the game.

Potomac School rebounded on their next possession as the Washington Post’s leading rusher Jalen Broome and quarterback Kevin Havermann drove the Panthers deep into Ireton territory.  A holding call negated a Broome touchdown run, but Havermann responded with a 15 yard scramble to dive into the end zone with 7:08 to play in the game to give the host team their first lead of 14-13.  After the Cardinals turned the ball over on their own 38, losing a fumble, Ireton’s Josh Ammon ran Broome out of bounds to save score.  Holding on the Panthers stalled the drive, but they added a 31 yard field goal with 4:06 remaining to play to increase the lead to 17-13.

This time it was Alex Duke that looked like the area’s leading rusher as he again ripped the ball on the ground and Andrew Latrash passing launched the Cardinals on a 10-play, 70 yard drive. A 31-yard pass to Drew Smith put the Cardinals on the door step and Latrash finished the drive with a quarterback sneak for 2 yards and the winning touchdown with :49.6 to play.  Try as they might, there was not a pass, run,  or gizmo play in the game’s final minute that the Panthers could get passed the Cardinals to score.

Bishop Ireton returns home for the season finale, Senior Day for ten players that will take the field one final time for the Cardinals. Pregame activities will begin at 12:30 with kickoff slated for 1pm when the 7-2 Pope John Paul the Great Wolves visit Fannon Field.

Bishop Ireton outlasts PVI, 3-2 in Girls’ Soccer

Senior Adrienne Maday(10) in action against PVI in the home finale, a 3-2 win for the Cardinals.

When the winds of autumn blow out of a darkening October sky, they demand your attention. Indeed, for much of the game, the Cardinals genuinely seemed distracted by more than the tenacity of the visiting PVI Panthers or the urgings of their coach, but somehow found a way in the game’s final moments to earn a 3-2 decision in their regular home season finale at Alexandria’s Witter Street Fields on Wednesday. The win gives the Cardinals the inside track on 4th place in the WCAC and a home game for the quarterfinal matchup in the coming championship tournament next week with only a rescheduled road game with Bishop McNamara remaining on Thursday.

Early in the game, Paul VI controlled the play of the game and appeared a step quicker to the ball.  In the game’s 14th minute, 26:50 remaining in the first half, Maddy Watson gave the Panthers an early advantage when her shot handcuffed Ireton’s sure handed sophomore Amy Krotine.

The surprise seemed to awaken the Cardinals and they almost immediately began to press the attack. Senior Adrienne Maday started a string of crisp passes that led to Grace Hamilton and expertly dealt off to Lilly Weber who tied the contest at 1-1.  Only 90 seconds later,  Maday passed to Grace Hersey who found Megan Reilly on the attack and Reilly gave Ireton a 2-1 advantage.  Paul VI responded quickly to the letdown and the squads battled up and down the pitch without either squad finding the net as the half ended.

As Panther coach Meg Ashley encouraged her players to “keep it up” Ireton’s Gino Leon exhorted his charges to “pick it up” as the second act began.  As the first half ended, so the second began with the visitors from Fairfax closely marking their Cardinal counterpart aggressively and denying chances for the home team to extend the lead. The teams sparred with the black jerseyed Panthers gaining confidence.  At 28:30 Ireton had its best chance to that point in the half when Grace Hersey blasted a shot that richoceted off the PVI crossbar and the long rebound cleared the box. The Cardinals would threaten again in the game’s 60th minute, but could not convert.

Paul VI took advantage of the opportunity, however, and in the 61st minute the Panther’s Molly Cox did make the most of her chance and knotted the affair at 2 all.  Back and forth went the ball clubs as PVI sensed a chance for an upset and Ireton continued to “bob and weave” without mounting a serious offensive challenge.

Suddenly, opportunity knocked and when the Cardinals got the ball to their stellar sophomore Lilly Weber, she sprinted ahead determined to finish the rush.  Finish she did with speed that put her one-on-one with the goalkeeper, she expertly disarmed the final defender to score her second goal of the day and the contest’s game winner.

The Panthers were not done and mounted a furious final assault on the Cardinals, driving the ball deep into the Ireton box but throughout the mad scramble as the seconds raced away they could not find the final punch of the ball across the goal line. As Ireton, finally it no doubt felt for the Cardinal faithful, cleared the sphere from the box, the center official’s whistle signaled the end of the latest edition this diocesan rivalry, this one going to the Cardinals.

Bishop Ireton will play its rescheduled game with Bishop McNamara Thursday at Walker Mill Park at 3:30pm for the varsity, 5pm for the junior varsity tilt.

Cadets escape Bishop Ireton 2-1

Coach Erin Simons is one of many excited for Cardinal field hockey after a 7-8 campaign for a squad that will lose only 3 seniors.

An undermanned Ireton field hockey team was belted 5-1 in the regular season visit to Quinn Field, so the Cardinals hoped their  now fully manned varsity team might catch the Cadets of St Johns looking forward to Holy Cross Monday in the WCAC quarterfinal in Washington.  They certainly got the Cadets’ attention in a tough 2-1 setback that wasn’t decided until the game’s final whistle.

Grace Fletcher gave Ireton a 1-0 lead when she scored with 17:13 left in the opening half of play.  St Johns tied the contest at 14:44 left in the first  period off the first of two penalty corners that would ultimately haunt the visiting Cardinals.  Not long after the Cadets tied the game, it appeared the redbirds had regained the lead.  That they did not would loom large.

Ireton controlled the ball and field position throughout much of the game and appeared to have recaptured the lead. As the team’s ambled toward the center circle, the off side official waved “no goal” to the scorer’s table and conferred with the second official who had ruled the shot a goal. After the brief meeting, the officials declared “goalie obstruction” and disallowed the tally and the game proceeded at 1-1.

Though senior Susie Rhodes and the Ireton defenders continued to turn away the St Johns offense,  and Izzy Obregon and Kelly Mathews used long clearing passes to initiate the Ireton offense, the shadows crawled across the artificial turf without either team finding a deciding goal.

Finally, with 4:07 to play in the match, the fateful second penalty corner was awarded and, following a scramble in front of the goal, the orange sphere shot into the box and Ireton was suddenly down a goal with little time remaining.  Much of the final four minutes involved the Cardinals frantically attempting to attack while the Cadets worked equally desperately to clear and clog the ball at midfield.  In the end, Ireton found the time insufficient and the season came to a close with a narrow setback.

“It is a bittersweet time for us right now.” said a disappointed Coach Erin Simons. “We have a great nucleus of girls returning next fall, only three graduate. But to have this season end in a manner we had so little control over is disappointing to me and to them.”

For Bishop Ireton, the second season in the WCAC saw the squad post a record high seven wins, including their first ever WCAC win, a 2-0 shutout of Elizabeth Seton and subsequently another 2-0 win over O’Connell. Their 5th place finish was their highest finish in the program’s two years of conference play.

Paul VI netters bounce Cardinals, 8-1

Sophomores Stephanie Lin (left) and Molly Jeffers (right) are two of a group of strong returning players to the 2014 tennis team. The two varsity starters will end the 2013 campaign at the WCAC championships.

Bishop Ireton’s girls tennis team ended their regular season with a 8-1 setback to diocesan rival Paul VI at home on Senior Day.

The Cardinals said farewell to five seniors before the match began, with Coach Katie Johnson introducing Alexandra Bowers, Megan Sullivan, Kellen Phillips, Catie Isham, and Avery Morrison.  Each girl received flowers and a Nike sport bag with “A Cardinal for Life” embroidered on it.

Paul VI dominated the play on the court with Ireton winning only one of six singles matches and losing all three doubles matches.  Junior Kristen Parker battled Mary Ellen Potter in #1 singles, but fell 8-2 after a number of closely contested games.  Likewise sophomore Stephanie Lin was outlasted 8-2 by Anna Markl.

Haley McKeen fell 8-1 to Alisen Reyes in #3 singles and senior Avery Morrison had a back and forth match with Mandy Hope. Morrison jumped to a 4-3 lead, but Hope rallied to win the final five games for an 8-4 final.  Molly Jeffers also fell 8-2 to Stephanie Porto in the #5 spot.  Senior Megan Sullivan snared the Cardinals’ lone win, 8-4 over Kathleen Hope.

The Panthers Potter/Markl #1 doubles labored for a 8-2 win over Ireton’s Parker/Lin team while Catie Isham/Casey Jackson duo were bounced 8-0 by Reyes/Ellie Womack of PVI.  Ireton’s Kellen Phillips/Alexandra Bowers pair were stopped by twin sisters, Mandy and Kathleen Hope 8-4.

Cardinals next action will come at the WCAC championship tournament in Olney, Maryland next week.
