Cardinals Make their Mark at Nationals

Cardinals battling opponents, winds at SRAA nationals in New Jersey

Bishop Ireton rowers had program – record performances at the Scholastic Rowing Association of America (SRAA) national championship regatta held on May 24-25, 2013, on the Cooper River in Cherry Hill, NJ.

Sending three boats to compete; the Washington Metropolitan Interscholastic Rowing Association (WMIRA) champion girl’s Freshman 8, the men’s Varsity 8 and women’s Varsity 4 with coxswain, the boats met challenging conditions on Friday. The girl’s freshman 8 finished fourth in their heat and did not advance. The men’s varsity 8 finished third and competed in the repecharge event later in the day and won the right to advance to the semifinals. The women’s varsity 4 won their heat and proceeded directly to the semifinals.  Though this was the highest finishes for BI boats to date, they were not done.

On Saturday, the winds came and persisted, flags along the course were standing straight out, and white-capped wavelets were the norm on the course. With a quartering tail-wind, the conditions were challenging to say the least.

The men’s varsity 8 came in fourth in the semifinals and would go to the Petit Final event. With a second place final, the women’s varsity 4 would go to the Grand Finals, marking the first time Bishop Ireton boats have made it to the finals at Nationals.  The conditions did not get any better, however, and small boat races were cancelled for safety reasons.
No fairy tale endings as the men’s boat finished 6thin their final for an overall national rank of 12th, and the women finished 5th for an overall national rank of 5th.  Many seniors concluded their high school careers with these races, but seven will have a chance to compete against their BI teammates as members of college teams next year.

Ireton’s baseball skipper steps down after 7 seasons

Head Coach Mike Gallagher (left) departs Ireton after 6 years at the helm, leading the Cardinals to 2 championship game appearances and earning the 2008 coach of the year honors in the WCAC.

Athletic Director Bill Simmons has announced that varsity baseball coach Mike Gallagher will step down, effective June 1st to pursue some long-standing personal goals.

Simmons lauded the efforts of the Hayfield High School graduate and one of the most successful baseball coaches in the School’s history.  “Coach Gallagher is a baseball guy. He is 100% committed to the Cardinals, to baseball and to developing baseball players. I am sorry to see him go, but I understand and respect what he is doing and why he is doing it. He leaves on great terms with us and we are wishing him well.”

Gallagher spent 7 seasons at Bishop Ireton. He came to the school in 2007 as a varsity assistant coach after spending the 2006 season as the head coach at Hayfield HS in Alexandria, where he was the Patriot District Coach of the Year.

In 2008, Mike Gallagher was named the head coach of the Cardinals. During his 6 years leading the redbirds, the Cardinals amassed 65 wins. They had 4 winning seasons. 4 trips to the VISAA State Playoffs, and 2 trips to the WCAC finals in 2008 and 2009.   Coach Gallagher was named WCAC Coach of the Year in 2008. The Cardinals have sent several players on to the next level to play college baseball, including 5 in this year’s senior class.

Simmons indicated the search for a replacement will begin immediately, but no time table has been set regarding the hiring of a new varsity head coach.

Ireton Enjoys Best Stotsbury Rowing Ever

Ireton qualified 3 boats for semifinals, most in program history at Stotesbury.

Bishop Ireton sent a program record three boats to the semifinals of the Stotesbury Regatta, held this past weekend on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia, PA. This is the largest junior rowing event in the country with as many as eighty boats competing in a single event.

The girls freshman 8, the women’s senior 8, and the men’s senior 8 all advanced through the time trials and into the match race format of the semifinals. The woman’s junior eight missed by 0.39 seconds to be the fourth Bishop Ireton boat moving ahead.

The girls’ freshman 8, the current Washington Metropolitan Interscholastic Rowing Association (WMIRA) freshman champions, represented the first freshman boat from BI to advance, the seeds for continuing success for our women’s program.

The season will be ending for the rowing program and the men’s senior eight, a women’s varsity 4 and the freshman eight compete next weekend at the Scholastic Rowing Association of America (SRAA) national championships on the Cooper River in Cherry Hill, NJ.

Season’s Results Signal Bright Lax Future for the Cardinal Girls

Cardinal goalie, Olivia Cole (22) and "Charlie" Buising (8) are busy during action over spring break on Long Island, NY

The Bishop Ireton girls’ varsity lacrosse team finished the season 17-6 with a team two-thirds composed of freshmen and sophomores (14 of 21 players). The Cardinals are only graduating three seniors this year—Brenna Heaney, Charlie Buising and Michaela Mulokey.  In 2014 there projects to be only four seniors—Olivia Cole, Kendall Cunningham, Annie Barletta and Catie Isham.

During the 2013 season, the girls’ lacrosse team: 1) advanced to the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference (WCAC) championship game for the first time since 2009; 2) advanced to the semifinals of the Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association championship tournament; 3) twice defeated 2012 WCAC champion Holy Cross—during the regular season 7-6 on April 19th and during the WCAC playoffs 13-5 on May 9th; 4) defeated two tough New York state opponents up on Long Island during spring break—Sacred Heart 11-5 on April 2nd and Long Beach 5-4 on April 3rd; 5) defeated 2012 Georgia state runner-up Lassiter 15-12 on April 5th; and 6) finished fourth overall in LaxPower.com’s DC Area power rankings.

Only two early season losses could be considered “out of reach.” Two other losses were by single goals—vs. Milton (Georgia) 12-11 on April 5th; and vs. Collegiate 9-8 on May 17th. The Cardinals finished the season winning 10 of their last 12 games.

Twelve players received 2013 All-WCAC honors: First Team—sophomores Kelly Matthews, Charlotte Sofield, Isabel Obregon and Kaitlin Luzik; Second Team—senior Brenna Heaney, juniors Kendall Cunningham and Olivia Cole, and sophomore Natalie Irwin; Honorable Mention—senior Charlotte Buising, sophomore Christine Macey, and freshmen Kelly Larkin and Maggie Lohrer.

The 2013 season saw 18 different players score goals with seven players in double digits and there were 16 different players getting assists with six players in double digits. Five different players were ranked among The Washington Post’s AllMetSports.com top 50 statistical leaders—Kelly Matthews was tied for 28th with 65 goals; Charlotte Sofield was 7th with 47 assists, Isabel Obregon was tied for 22nd with 31 assists and Kelly Larkin was tied for 42nd with 24 assists; and Olivia Cole was 8th with 173 saves.

Kendall Cunningham had a team season-high eight goals vs. Potomac School on April 18th. Charlotte Sofield had a team season-high six assists vs. Paul VI on March 26th. Olivia Cole had a team season-high 15 saves vs. Sacred Heart on April 2nd and actually got two assists during the season as well—one each vs. Bishop O’Connell on May 3rd and vs. Collegiate on May 17th. Cole also had a sharp eye for notifying referees about illegal sticks being used during free position shots—going 8-of-9 on the season including two against the same St. Anne’s Belfield player on March 12th.

Olivia Cole, Kaitlin Luzik, Charlotte Sofield, Natalie Irwin, Kelly Matthews and Maggie Lohrer were recently named to play for different teams representing the D.C. Metro Region in the prestigious Schoolgirls’ Division of the U.S. Lacrosse Women’s National Tournament taking place May 25-26 at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, PA.

Charlotte Sofield, Isabel Obregon, Kaitlin Luzik, Natalie Irwin and Olivia Cole were all named to Under Armour’s 2013 Underclass All-American Washington, D.C., team. The D.C. team will battle it out with nine other regional teams from around the United States at the respected Under Armour All-America Lacrosse Classic July 5-7 at Towson University in Baltimore, MD.

Natalie Irwin and Olivia Cole are members of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes’ Girls Lacrosse National High School Team that will compete at the Lake Placid Summit Classic August 5-7 in Lake Placid, NY.

Varsity and junior varsity players will again be playing this summer for various travel teams at tournaments all along the East Coast and sharpening their lacrosse skills at a variety of summer camps. This travel team/camp involvement also holds true for incoming Class of 2017 freshmen including participation in tournaments as far afield as the Vail Lacrosse Shootout July 1-3 in Vail, CO, and the U15 National Championship July 23-25 at Disney World’s ESPN Wide World of Sports complex in Lake Buena Vista, FL.

The future does indeed seem to hold much promise and potential for the Bishop Ireton girls’ lacrosse program under head coach Rick Sofield.

Collegiate Upends Cardinals to Advance to VISAA title game, 9-8

Freshmen Kelly Larkin is one of the many bright stars logging varsity experience the Cardinals hope will pay big dividends down the road.

Bishop Ireton saw turnovers and draw controls put them in a 7-3 hole at halftime and even an inspired second half left them just short in falling 9-8 to Collegiate School of Richmond Friday on the Cougars’ home field.

The  Cougars never trailed in the first half, pulling away from a 2-2 tie to bolt to the 4-goal halftime bulge, taking advantage of Cardinal miscues, playing strong defense and getting exceptional goaltending. The play of both keepers was especially strong, particularly in the second half.

Ireton came out in the second half, pressed the home team with defense and Olivia Cole was impenetrable in the net.  On the offensive end of the field, Ireton played a more patient, deliberate style and forced the green-clad Cougars to call a time out after pulling to 7-6. Charlotte Sofield tied the game at seven before Kelly Larkin’s crossing pass was tipped into the net and gave the Cardinals their only lead of the day at 8-7 at 10:12.

Collegiate would stiffen, shutting out Ireton the rest of the way and score their first goal of the half at 16 minutes into the period.  They then wrestled the lead back with five minutes to play.

The third-seeded hosts packed their defense at the 12 meter arc while Ireton moved the ball around the perimeter probing for an opening for much of the game’s final minutes. The Cardinals got their chance when sophomore Kelly Mathews was fouled but her free position shot resulted in a spectacular save and a ground ball to the Cougars. Ireton would never regain control of the sphere in the final minutes as Collegiate worked the delaying game around the perimeter.

The game was a rematch of the 2012 semifinals, last year it was Ireton that pulled the upset to move on to the finals against St Stephens. Once again this year, the victorious Cougars get the tall order of facing the Saints for a state title.

Ireton returns to Cambridge Road 17-5 on the season, disappointed in the loss no doubt, but losing only three seniors from the squad that made its second consecutive state semifinal, as well as its first appearance in the WCAC finals only days before for the first time since 2009.

Girls Lax Rebounds with a win in VISAA tourney, 17-6

Christine Macey was one of a number of Cardinals with three goals in the 17-6 VISAA quarterfinal win over Norfolk Academy Tuesday at Fannon Field.

The Bishop Ireton Cardinals girls’ lacrosse defeated the visiting Norfolk Academy  Bulldogs 17-6 last night at Fannon Field in a Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association (VISAA) quarterfinal state playoff game. The Cardinals regrouped however, and began to pull away, holding a 7-3 halftime advantage. The second-seeded Ireton continued the pressure in the second half, outscoring the 7th seeded visitors 10-3 in the game’s final 25 minutes.

Twelve different Cardinals received credit for goals and/or assists during the game, including four players who notched goal-scoring hat tricks. LCA too much for Ireton in VISAA quarterfinals, 5-2

Cardinals' Ben Judd (10) hits during Ireton's 5-2 season-ending game with LCA at Frank Mann Field.

Andrew Selby did all he could to give the Bishop Ireton Cardinals  a boost, but it wasn’t enough to get past Liberty Christian in the VISAA quarterfinals, as the Cardinals  lost 5-2 in seven innings at Frank Mann Field on Tuesday.

It was a good day at the plate for Selby, who went 2-2 and drove in one. He singled in the first and third innings.

Bergin got the win for Liberty Christian. He allowed two runs over five innings. He struck out five, walked two and surrendered six hits.

Liberty Christian was sparked by Clinton and Barrick, who teamed up for four hits and four RBIs.

Liberty Christian jumped on the Cardinals early with a solo home run by Clinton.  Liberty Christian pushed across one run in both the third inning and the seventh. In the third, Liberty Christian scored on an RBI double by Barrick, bringing home Bergin.

The Cardinals countered with one run in the bottom of the fourth to cut their deficit to one.  A groundout by Cody Hagenston triggered the Ireton comeback, but Bergin worked out of  the inning by getting Todd Cunningham to ground out.

Liberty Christian piled on two more runs in the top of the fifth. Barrick kicked things off with a double, scoring Clinton. That was followed up by C Kirkland‘s double, plating Barrick.

A one-run fifth inning helped bring the home team within two. A sacrifice fly by Selby gave the Cardinals hope, closing the margin to 4-2, before Bergin got Nick Tangora to ground out to end the threat.
