Cardinals Surprise DeMatha, 6-4 in Baseball

Coaches and players expressed confidence in the Cardinals' chances in the upcoming playoffs as the final regular season games wind up this week.

DeMatha wasn’t able to overcome the big hole it dug itself against the Bishop Ireton Cardinals falling  6-4 Saturday afternoon at Riverside Park in Maryland.

“The guys played a solid game, starting with Robert Corallo’s effort on the mound.  When you can beat DeMatha, PVI, lose to St John’s on a play at the plate, it suggests to me that we can make an impact in this upcoming tournament. We just have to focus and play well.” commented first-year coach Rex Thomas on the Cardinals’ win.

The  Cardinals tore into the Stags to take a  six-run lead by the fifth inning.   DeMatha scored on a walk by Justin Morris in the fifth inning and an RBI single by Justin Morris, an RBI single by Chris Jeletic, and a hit by pitch in the seventh inning. Despite its efforts, DeMatha couldn’t finish the comeback against Corallo and Sean Workman who got the game’s final out.

Ireton’s Matthew Bardak racked up three RBI on one hit when he homered in the first inning.    Robert Corallo got the win.   He allowed four runs over 6 2/3 innings. Corallo struck out nine, walked five and gave up seven hits.

Cameron Fitzgerald ended up on the wrong side of the pitching decision for the Stags, charged with the loss. He lasted 3 2/3 innings, walked three, struck out three, and allowed five runs.

Bishop Ireton Cardinals Varsity didn’t relinquish the lead after scoring two runs in the first inning when they scored on the  two-run Bardak homer.   The visiting Cardinals added three more runs in the top of the fourth.  Ryan Scott’s double got things going, plating Bardak  and Chandler Wilder. That was followed up by Eric Alvarez’s single, scoring James Swiger.  The win improves Bishop Ireton to 4-10 in WCAC play with Good Counsel visiting on senior day Monday.  The season ends with the Cardinals visiting St Mary’s Ryken on Wednesday.

Spring Break: Game 1

Myrtle Beach
The girls had a great start of the week. The girls lacrosse team headed down to Myrtle Beach. They had two practices a day and a hard, long run in the morning. Many of the girls looked great and had fun during practices. Everyone was excited about being on Spring Break and being with their team. On Thursday, April 24, the girls went on a long 8 hour bus ride to Alpharetta, Georgia and went straight to practice.

Game 1: Loyola
An early morning game starting at 10:30 the Cardinals took the field to play against Loyola High School. There was a great start to the game with a win of the draw by Kayla Duperrouzel and a goal by Kelly Matthews. However, Loyola came back strong with a goal right after the Cards. Defense was strong with their backer defense and smart slides from Maggie Lohrer, Grace Fletcher, and Susan Morad. The Cardinals were very strong and ready to win. A yellow card against the girls made the team alittle shaken up and had two goals scored on them, but then made adjustment and did fine. Kendall Cunningham had a great shot that hit the pipe, but with her quick reactions she got the ball from out of the air and quicks ticked it into the goal! The second yellow card towards the end of the first half got into some of the girls’ heads. At halftime the score was 7-6 Cardinals. It seems like the referees were calling many fouls on the Cardinals but not many on Loyola and that seemed to be getting in the girls’ heads. The girls found it distressing but went hard throughout the game. This game was very physical and close. The game could have gone either way. The defense seemed very strong and they did not want to give up any goals. The goalies tried to save every goal but it just was not there. The end score of this nail biting game was 11-12 Loyola with a goal in the last 13 seconds.

Goals by: Charlotte Sofield, Kelly Matthews, Kelly Larkin, Kendall Cunningham, Christine Macey, Kayla Duperrouzel, and Kaitlin Luzik.

Next game at 2:30

Delaney was hot from the plate, going 2-3 and scored two runs. He singled in the first and sixth innings.

Yianni Tsiamis got it done on the mound on the way to a win. He allowed two runs over 5 1/3 innings. He struck out eight, walked one and surrendered three hits.

A one-run sixth inning helped bring the home team within one. A sacrifice fly by Matthew Bardak triggered the  comeback.  The Panthers got Robert Corillo, however, to end the ball game.

Boys’ hoops closes the book on 2013-14 with awards banquet

Renowned college coach Pete Strickland was the keynote speaker at the Bishop Ireton Boys' Basketball banquet on Apr 6th at Bishop Ireton.

Bishop Ireton’s boys’ basketball team honored its varsity team Sunday night during their annual awards banquet.  Guest speaker and long time college coach, Pete Strickland, praised the squad for their season and their class.

“I saw you beat a very good Washington and Lee team early in the season.  You beat them handily and, if you followed their season, they had a very good year.  But you played with a great chemistry and with class, when you got out ahead, you played disciplined basketball, didn’t show anyone up.” lauded the veteran coach. “And, I saw you play your hearts out in a narrow loss at DeMatha.  I’m a DeMatha guy, but I was rooting for your great effort to be rewarded.  And, you know, I was there in the WCAC semifinals, when you played DeMatha again but it wasn’t so close.  You played with the same determination at the end of the game, played hard in the fourth quarter like you did in the first quarter.  You showed people a lot by the way you played.”

Following Strickland’s remarks, head coach Neil Berkman thanked a number of supporters, assistant coaches, and support staff before turning his attention to his team one last time.  “We are doing more than preparing to play basketball.” said Berkman, as he commended the youngest players who filled their roles, none in the spotlight, but all important to the success of the entire team. He went on to praise the defensive prowness of sophomore Jeremiah Brooks and the impact of his loss in the O’Connell win on the Cardinals defeat in the WCAC semifinal. But he saved his most effusive praise for his four seniors.

The New York native commended the hard work and constant improvement of Ty Quarles and Army-bound Jamie Senft.  “Big guys do a lot of growing and their development can be later than other guys, Jamie sure did a lot of growing and maturing as a post player this year.”  Likewise Berkman named senior Patrick Moseh as the squad’s most valuable player, a player that stuck with it for three varsity years continually working and improving, in fact, the 5th year coach suggested Moseh could be one of the best offensive rebounders in the talent-rich WCAC.  Finally,  Dan Noe, heading for the US Naval Academy, was honored as the team’s Cardinal award winner.

“Tireless worker, put up 67,000 jump shots in the gym as a Cardinal, always looking to improve.  When Jamie went down, Dan played the post for us last year. When our point guard transferred, he stepped to play that position this year. ” Berkman pointed out.  “And, as evidence of the type of people we have in our program, Dan and Jamie will attend service academies and commit to defending our country when their college basketball days are completed. Likewise, said Berkman, “Pat Moseh will attend Wheeling Jesuit and no doubt excel. He is a division I talent, but is going where he will get a great education and his best days are still ahead of him, for all these seniors.”

Led by the Maryland alum, the senior class of Coach Berkman, earned 18 wins for the second consecutive season, 48 in their three varsity campaigns.  The Cardinals and WCAC champion Panthers of Paul VI were the only two programs to reach the WCAC semifinals in 2012-13 and 2013-14.  That unparallelled success earned Dan Noe first team, all WCAC honors, while Moseh was a second team selection.  DCSportsFan ranked the Cardinals 7th in the final poll and named Neil Berkman as their Coach of the Year.
