Wrestling opens 2011-12 with questions, expectations

A strong nucleus of lettermen make the outlook bright for Ireton wrestling

Bishop Ireton’s wrestlers have enjoyed success the past few years, winning the Catholic state duals two years in a row and capturing the Bishop Ireton Holiday Classic last season as well as St Stephen’s Christmas tourney.   While graduation has left some holes in the lineup, those wins have raised the expectations in the wrestling room for the 2011-12 edition of Cardinal wrestling, according to assistant coach Kwinten Brown.

“Last year was a very good one for us.” said the Alexandria native who is listed number 2 on the list of all time wins in Bishop Ireton history.  “I know it raised the expectations I have for our guys.”

All Met 103 pounder Elliot Mondragon has graduated, but a number of veterans return, including  Andrew Lutterloh, Nick Womack, Darcy Gomez, Andrew Bladen, Mike Rodriguez, Ben Nagao, Tommy Fessehaye, Gibson Hawk, and Andrew Baehre.

The Cardinals open the season at defending WCAC champs, Good Counsel, in a triangular meet with the Falcons and St John’s Cadets. They follow that Dec 7th opener with the annual trip to Fairfax High School for the Northern Virginia Regional tournament on Dec 9th. The Cardinals 9th place finish last year was the highest finish by a Virginia private school among the 32 teams participating.

The Ireton Classic is set for Saturday, Dec 17th in Godley Gym, the Cardinals also have the St Stephens holiday tourney on their plate after Christmas, the 6th annual Nick Mason Classic at King George High School on January 7th, the City championships on Friday, Jan 13th and Capitol Duals on Jan 14th,  before the lone triangular meet of the season on Jan 25th when DeMatha and Gonzaga visit Godley Gym for Senior day.

The season begins its conclusion with the WCAC championship at PVI on Feb 4th. The St Albans annual tourney, States the following weekend, and finally National Preps at Lehigh complete the weekends of wrestling action.

Three ink “letters” during NCAA early signing period

3 Lax Cardinals sign NLIs at Bishop Ireton Wednesday, left to right, seniors Margaret Nealon, Eva Irwin, and Gabby Barowski.

Three Bishop Ireton seniors signed national letters of intent Wednesday during the NCAA’s early signing period, committing to play lacrosse for a pair of division I programs and one DII program. The lacrosse players’ signings brings to more than a dozen girls from the program playing college lacrosse in the past four years.

Senior Margaret Nealon, daughter of Mr & Mrs Robert Nealon of Alexandria, signed her national letter of intent to head to Burlington, Vermont, and become a Catamount at the University of Vermont of the America  East Conference and play for Coach Jen Johnson.  Nealon was a second team, all WCAC midfielder for the Cardinals in 2010 as well as an Academic All American.  Additionally, she ran varsity cross country and is a two-year member of the Bishop Ireton chapter of the National Honor Society.

Eva Irwin will head to West Long Branch, New Jersey to become a Hawk at Monmouth University.   Recruited by Coach Denise Wescott as a defender, Irwin was also a second team, all WCAC midfielder for Bishop Ireton in 2011.  She played lacrosse for the Capital Lacrosse Club, race varsity cross country at Ireton, and is a two-year member of the School’s chapter of the National Honor Society.  Sister, Madeleine, plays division I lacrosse for UMBC, while younger sister, Natalie, joins the Cardinals as a freshmen for the 2012 campaign.  Eva is the daughter of Mr & Mrs Richard Irwin of Annandale, Virginia.

Defender Gabby Barowski, another second team, all WCAC honoree in 2011, will play her college lacrosse at Florida Southern University in Lakeland, Florida. Coach Kara Reber, who will kick off the initial season for the Moccasins in 2012 and play an independent schedule.   Gabby played soccer for 4 years for the Cardinals as well as lacrosse.  Like her teammates, she too is a member of the School’s National Honor Society.  She is the daughter of LCDR  & Mrs Mark Barowski, USN, of Alexandria, Virginia.

“I am very proud of Gabby, Eva, and Margaret.” said varsity head coach, Rick Sofield.  “They are three talented players who have earned an opportunity to compete at the next level.  Margaret is a shifty midfielder who was elected a pre-season captain for Bishop Ireton and has helped lead our off-season conditioining program — the University of Vermont will be lucky to have her enthusaism and dedication.  Eva is a multi-faceted player who can both score and defend — her skills will be put to good use at Monmouth University.  Gabby is an exceptionally athletic defender — Florida Southern will be able to build their defense around her.  These three women are the latest proof that the Bishop Ireton girls lacrosse program consistently produces quality student-athletes whose academic and athletic efforts are rewarded with the chance to compete at the highest levels both on the field and in the classroom. We look forward to seeing more great things from them.”

The national letter of intent (NLI) is a binding agreement between the athlete and college.  By signing, the student-athlete agrees to attend the institution full time for one academic year. In return, the college commits to provide some specific amount of financial aid for that academic year. Other institutions are prohibited from recruiting the athlete who signs an NLI.

The early period for NLI signing allowed by the NCAA for lacrosse is November 9 -16.  The normal signing period for lacrosse is April 11th to August 1st.  For more information on eligibility and the NCAA, go their website and visit the Eligibility Center.

Volleyball ends season with pair of tourney setbacks

Krinstin Becht leads a large group of letterwinners returning for the 2012 campaign following a 16-15 season in 2011.

Bishop Ireton’s Cardinals ended the 2011 volleyball campaign with a 16-15 mark following a pair of losses in the WCAC semifinals and first round of the VISAA state playoffs respectfully.

The Cardinals jumped on top-ranked, and eventual conference champion, Good Counsel in the first game of the WCAC semifinals wining by a 25-21 count. The Falcons regrouped to down Ireton 25-16, 25-20, 25-16 to pull away for the 3-1 win.

The next week, the 7th seeded Ireton journeyed to Oakton in some of the area’s toughest traffic, and arrived just in time to play the first game like a harried commuter in dropping the first game to Flint Hill 25-9.  They regrouped in the next game, but were edged 25-21 and 25-22 in the final set to fall to the second-seeded Huskies, who advanced to the state semifinals in Richmond.

“We didn’t serve as well as we normally do,” lamented head coach, Kathy Gutmann following the game. “I am disappointed for the girls that we didn’t play better all around in this state playoff match, we are a better team than the game scores suggest. That said, we had a very good year, one we can be very proud of.”

The season ends with a number of positives, the winning season, first trip to the conference semifinals in a number of years, strong cadre of returning players for the 2012 seas0n.  The WCAC announced that senior Laura Hart was selected second team all conference, Emileigh Rettig was selected to the third team while  junior Kristen Becht, sophomore Ashley Cabrera, and junior Sarah Hersey were honorably mentioned in the 2011 all league selections.

St Christophers advances to title game with a stunning finish, 38-34

Senior Malcolm Westbrook had 8 catches for 171 yards in the playoff game with St Christophers.

There have been few contests in Bishop Ireton football history with more action and heart-stopping excitement than the #2 ranked Cardinals 38-34 setback to third-seeded St Christopher’s of Richmond on Saturday on Fannon Field.  With 8 lead changes, swings in momentum, turnovers, spectacular plays, and unexpected turns, fans were on the edge of the seats, when the sat at all, during the see-saw affair.

It was the most improbable play late in the fourth quarter than became the game winner though the Cardinals marched 64 yards in the game’s final 50 seconds to keep the contest in doubt until the final play.  With 2:28 remaining Ireton’s PJ Zingler hit tight end Matt McShea for a 3-yard touchdown that gave the home team the lead.

When the Aurelian Guillaud kickoff sailed to the 3 yard line and Mike Moseley buried Cameron Barlow on the 7 yardline, the defense followed with a strong effort, forcing an incompletion on first down, a one-yard gain on second down, and a sack of Giles Thompson that was nearly a safety, though officials spotted the ball on the Saints 1, with a 4th and 16 setting up the play of the game. Thompson tossed a pass over the middle to senior Blair Farinholt who lateralled back to junior Cole Carns.

As the stunned home crowd watched Carns make the corner sprinting to the north side of the field, it became obvious that no one was going catch the 5’10”, 170 pound senior as he dashed down the visitors’ sideline untouched, giving St Christopher’s a 38-34 win.

Bishop Ireton drew first blood in the VISAA’s Division I football semifinal when senior Andrew Bladen scored on a one-yard run. The Saints blocked the PAT, but the Cardinals had 6-0 lead.  The Saints would respond with a 31-yard field goal by Jordan Chalkley narrowing the score to 6-3. Ireton would up the advantage to 13-3 as they capped a 6-play, 60-yard drive with a 17-yard touchdown pass from Zingler to Brandon Price-Williams, who would snare 5 passes for 72 yards.

The Saints then posted 14 straight points begining with a 14-play, 60 yard drive capped by a Thompson one yard sneak.  On the Cardinals next possession, Price-Williams dashed 20 yards on a 3rd and 15 play, only to lose the football on the tackle and Cameron Barlow alertly scooped it up,  raced 41 yards to the end zone and suddenly St Christopher’s held a 17-13 lead.

Zingler would counter, leading the Cardinals on a 10-play, 57-yard drive ending with a spectacular diving 7-yard touchdown to Malcolm Westbrook, one of eight passes for 171 yards the lanky senior would corral on the day. The Nick Galdos PAT returned the lead to the home squad, 20-17, with 2:20 remaining in the first half.

The teams traded possessions to start the second half, but on the Saints second effort of the half, Thompson found senior Miles Jackson for a 77-yard touchdown pass, Thompson would throw strikes of 54, 77, and 99 yards on the day for scores, and St Christopher’s was back on top, 24-20.  Westbrook returned the subsequent kickoff 30 yards to the Ireton 44, then Ireton quickly regained the lead on a 5-play drive capped off by a 25-yard strike to Price-Williams, sending the Cardinals into the 4th quarter with a 27-24 lead.

Aurelian Guillaud’s 51-yard punt had backed the Saints deep in their own end,  but the Cardinals could not capitalize as the game wound down to the final 4 minutes.  The Richmond school started their drive on their own 21, but Thompson hit three different receivers in four passes to move the ball to the Saints’46. There he found Farinholt for a 54-yard pass and the Saints were back on top at 31-27 with 3:52 left to play.

Malcolm Westbrook took a screen pass 46 yards on the next series to almost instantly but Ireton back in the lead, but it would be a 3-yard toss to McShea that gave Ireton the final advantage at 34-31, setting up the Saints’ last minutes’ heroics.

The stunning score notwithstanding, with :51 seconds on the clock and Ireton on it’s own 20, Zingler tried one last time, engineering a 10-play drive, including a 40-yard pass play to Westbrook and a face mask penalty to the Saints, to give the Cardinals one last shot on 4th down at the St Christophers’ 16 yard line and :04 left to play. When the pass to Westbrook was broken up in the endzone, the celebration could begin for the Saints, who head to Lynchburg to play Liberty Christian Academy on Friday for the state championship. LCA downed Flint Hill, 45-3 in the other semifinal.

“I stood on the sideline with 4 seconds left wondering what I would say to the team if we lost on the final play,” explained a happy Mike Turner, head coach of the Saints. “and, you know, I decided it would be the same thing as if we won.  It was a tremendous game by two very good football teams that deserved to be here today.”

The Cardinals end the season at 8-3, playing in the playoff for the first  time since 2007.

St John’s withstands Cardinals, 1-0, to win WCAC soccer title

by Brian Kapur, DCSportsFan

Junior forward Karina Azar and the Cardinals had some chances but couldn't solve Kirsten Glad and the St Johns defense is a 1-0 setback in the 2011 WCAC championships. Azar leads a talented group of returning letterwinners that have the Cardinals enthusiastic about the 2012 campaign.

Bishop Ireton looked the part of Cinderella as they ran through the WCAC playoffs and shocked Good Counsel, who was considered the top team in the country in an ESPN poll. But on Sunday at the Maryland Soccer Complex, the clock struck midnight as St. John’s shut out the Cardinals 1-0 to claim the girls soccer WCAC Championship.

“It means the world to all of us,” senior midfielder Shannon Collins said. “I know that quite a few of us are still in shock and we are just trying to enjoy the victory.”

The Cadets controlled the tempo and dominated the ball in the first half, but Ireton’s defense didn’t allow quality shots. But with less than nine minutes to go before halftime, St. John’s had a corner opportunity. The Cadets kicked the ball into the box looking for someone to put it into the goal. Collins stepped up and fired the ball into the net to put the Cadets up 1-0 at halftime.

“In the first half we played extremely well, moved the ball really well and created a lot chances and controlled the game,” Cadets head coach Devin Payton said.

In the second half, the Cardinals took control of the tempo and went on the attack. They had four great shot opportunities.

“We had better chances, but in soccer you have to put the ball in the back of the net, that’s what counts,” Cardinals head coach Gino Leon said. “If you look back at the game, look at how many chances we had. We had four or five chances, but we were a half step off or just late.”

St. John’s senior goalkeeper Kirsten Glad came up with huge saves down the stretch to stonewall the Cardinals and preserve the shutout and the Cadets win.
