Cardinals Collect Medals at Rowing League championships

Cardinals wrap up league championships, head to Philly's Stotesbury Regatta next

At this past weekend’s WMIRA League Championship the Bishop Ireton Rowing team continued a strong season with three Silver Medal finishes and one Bronze Medal finish. After an undefeated regular season the Girl’s Varsity boat finished second behind a dominant Walt Whitman High School to match their impressive finish from last year. Not to be outdone, the Girl’s Junior Varsity boat squeezed into the medals with a third place finish behind Whitman and Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School.

The Boys’ side also saw it’s share of success on the race course Saturday with a second place finish in the Boys’ Novice event – boding well for the coming years. Then, to finish off the day, the Boys’ Varsity boat came back after a disappointing defeat in the heats to win the Petite (second level) final by a wide margin.

“As the head coach I am very proud of every Ireton boat that competed today,” exclaimed Coach Eric Gehrke when asked about the results, “But we are far from our top goals for this program. We will take the brief moment to celebrate our immediate successes and then we will move forward understanding that progress is still needed. Although, it never hurts to have a medal around your neck to keep you going.”

The Cardinals will be closing out their season this upcoming weekend in Philadelphia, PA at the Stotesbury Cup Regatta where they will be able to not only face the boats they raced in the WMIRA Championships but also a majority of the fastest boats in the nation.

Cards top PVI in quarterfinals, head to O’Connell Thursday

Sophomore Kathleen Walsh makes a running catch in the Cardinals' 9-3 win over PVI in first round WCAC playoff action Tuesday

Using timely batting, lights out pitching and solid defense Cardinal softball defeated Paul VI 9-3 in the opening round of the WCAC tournament advancing to the semifinal game for the first time in over  4 years.  Micki Crouch struck out 8 and allowed only 5 hits while freshman Susie Rhodes went 4 for 4 with 2 doubles and 3 RBI’s.   The win gives Ireton a 14-8 record overall.

After retiring visiting PVI in order during the first, Ireton jumped ahead to a 2-0 lead. Heather Pearson doubled to right and Debbie Ward drove her in with a booming triple to right center field. Susie  Rhodes then brought her home with her first double of the game.  Micki Crouch then struck out the PVI side in the second and the Ireton bats went back to work.  With two outs, Heather Pearson tripled and then stole home on a wild pitch.  After Ward drew a walk, Rhodes again doubled to center field to make the score 4-0.

In the third inning, Crouch again struck out the side and Ireton scored 2 more runs.  After being hit by a pitch, Megan Sullivan was moved up to second by a speedy Emily Quinn who beat out an infield hit down the third base line.  A Caroline Boddie sacrifice moved up the runners before Micki Crouch smacked a first pitch double to center field making the score 6-0.

With the top of the PVI order in the 4th inning,  the Panthers staged their only rally of the game scoring 3 runs on 4 hits.  But, the Cardinals came right back with another 2 runs in their half of the inning.  Susie Rhodes singled and catcher Meghan Pearson walked setting the bases for Katie Kiesner who singled in Rhodes.  Maria Manzek, running for the catcher, scored on a fielder’s choice by pinch hitter Sarah Howell.   Ireton added its final run in the fifth when senior Caroline Boddie scored on a Rhodes single.

“We played our best game of the year today with great defense and good at bats up and down the lineup,” commented coach Terri Pearson.  “Hopefully, we can sustain this level of play throughout the WCAC and state tournaments.”

The Cardinals travel to Bishop O’connell on Thursday for the WCAC semifinals.

Boys 4×400 Relay Wins Draper Championship; Gordon and Wissler Set School Records

Cardinals' 4x400 relay team of Sam Ferrar(passing baton) BJ Townsley, Arthur Stier, and Mike Andersen won the 30th Annual Draper Relays final event Saturday at St Stephens.

The Draper Relays always brings out the best Ireton track and field performances of the season.  Led by Senior Shannon Gordon and Junior BJ Townley, the 2011 team did not disappoint as the boys (5th) and girls (6th) had their highest team finishes in recent years.  The boys4x400 meter relay team Seniors Sam Ferrara, Arthur Stier, and Michael Andersen teamed with junior BJ Townley to end the drought of meet champions with a win the event at 3:31.86.

It was a thrilling victory to put a cap on the day, as Ferrara staked the Cardinals to a slim lead on the first lap over Georgetown Day and Gonzaga.  The two teams nugged the redbirds into third place as Andersen grabbed the baton for the final lap at Sleepy Thompson Stadium.   The lanky senior found a gear the other runners didn’t have on that anchor leg as he caught the GDS runner out of the first turn and snared the Gonzaga anchorman in the back stretch.   Andersen was in overdrive pulling away to the finish to give Ireton the gold medal.

The 400 and 3200 meter relay teams also scored big points placing 6th and 7th.  Individual boys medalist included:  Townley (4th – 110 hurdles; 5th – Triple Jump; 4th-400 meter dash); Ferrara (6th-400 meter dash); Andersen (7th-800 meter run); Moses Webb (4th- 100 meter dash)Ironically, these athletes produced scored the remaining.

Shannon Gordon lowered her own 300 meter hurdle record to 47.10 finishing 4th.  Not to be out done, Anna Wissler followed her in the very next event setting a new school record in the girls 800 meter run (2:27.0) while finishing 4th.  Gordon went on to medal in the 100 meter hurdles (3rd), high jump (8th), and led the

1600 meter relay team (Gordon, Marin Nolan, Ricca, Graham, and Nicole Bond) to 3rd place (4:13.76).  Wissler teamed with former 800 record holder Nolan, Madeline Thomas, and Joanna Faletti narrowly missing the girls 3200 meter record while finishing 2nd in 10:03.73.  Additional girls medal performances included: Madeline Thomas (4th-3200 meter run; 6th-1600 meter run), Nicole Bond (6th-100 meter dash; 7th-200 meter dash) and Megan Reilly (3rd-Freshman Mile).

Leading into next weeks Catholic Schools State Championship meet, several athletes are beginning to peak.  Gabby Goddette set a new personal record in the 3200 meter run by 13 seconds (12:07.21) and Arthur Stier looks to close out his high school career at the top.  He set a personal record in the 800 at 2:03.70.  Look for the Cards next week to defend their boys state title and the girls to push rival O’Connell for top honors.

WCAC softball tourney set, Cards host PVI

Freshman Heather Pearson and mates host Paul VI in semifinal softball action Tuesday, May 10. The Cardinals fell to the 4 seed after tiebreaker considerations gave Bishop McNamara a 3 seed.

The end of the WCAC regular season saw Bishop Ireton tied with Bishop McNamara for third, behind regular season winner, Bishop O’Connell and number two, Elizabeth Seton.  With the season head-to-head split at 1-1, the tiebreaker rules take over determining the third seed.

The Mustangs earned a 1-3 regular season mark against the higher seeded Seton and O’Connell, while the Cardinals were 0-4.  That difference sent Ireton to the 4th seed and a rematch of Friday’s opponent, fifth-seeded Paul VI at Luckett Field, tentatively set for Tuesday at 4pm, pending Alexandria City approval.

The winner of this 4 versus 5 match up will likely face top-seeded Bishop O’Connell as the Knights host the winner of the Ryken/St Johns play in game.  In the other match ups, second seeded Seton will host 7th seed, Good Counsel, while the Mustangs at number 3 will entertain Holy Cross, the 6 seed.  Semifinals are set for Thursday, championship will be at 1pm on Saturday, at the University of Maryland.

Softball bounces back over Good Counsel 4-0

Cardinal softball got back on the winning track on Wednesday with a 4-0 blanking of a much improved Good Counsel squad.  Pitcher Micki Crouch, with 10 strikeouts and allowing just four  hits,  was backed up by error free fielding to shut down the Good Counsel offense.  With the win, the Cardinals stretch their record to 12-7 on the year.

Ireton started the game strong in the first inning with a single from freshman Heather Pearson who was moved up by Debbie Ward.  A Susie Rhodes double then drove Pearson home with the first run of the game.  The 1-0 lead would stand through much of the game as neither team could mount a rally.  Of note, Emily Quinn got 2 hits in 2 at bats and together with Caroline Boddie executed perfect bunts.  Debbie Ward smacked a triple.  In the final inning, Junior Jessie Taylor led off with a walk which was followed with a single by Micki Couch.  Heather Pearson then hit a double, clearing the bases to make the score 3-0.  Susie Rhodes then delivered another RBI as she brought Pearson in from second.   Ireton’s  defense played another tight bottom half of the 7th to end the game.

Ireton has two regular season games remaining before they start WCAC tournament play next week.

Mustangs Edge Cards in 10-inning marathon, 8-7

Crouch racing for the plate during third inning home run.

The Lady Cardinals lost an extra innings thriller Monday afternoon May 2d, losing to Bishop McNamara 8-7 in 10 innings.   McNamara overcame a 2 run deficit in the top of the 7th inning to tie the score and then manufactured another run in the 10th to go ahead.  With the loss, Ireton drops to an 11-7 record overall.

The Cards got on the board in the first inning when the Mustangs tried to pick off Freshman Maria Manzek at first base.  The throw was bobbled allowing Heather Pearson to sprint home from third base. McNamara answered in the third inning with three consecutive hits and a pair of fielding errors to go up 4-1.  Junior Micki Crouch led off the Ireton third with a home run.  Heather Pearson reached first on an error, was advanced to second and then third by Debbie Ward and a Susie Rhodes’ single before stealing home.   Meghan Pearson singled, but Susie Rhodes was thrown out at the plate while trying to score from second base.  To finish the third, Junior Katie Keisner singled, driving in the tying run.

After another McNamara run in the 4th inning, Pitcher Micki Crouch and solid defense shut down McNamara in the 5th inning. After two quick outs in the Ireton 5th , Susie Rhodes drew a  walk followed by singles by Meghan Pearson and Katie Kiesner.  With the bases loaded, freshman Megan Sullivan then slammed a fly ball double to center field plating all three base runners to put the home team up 7-5.  Junior Debbie Ward also continued to swing the hot bat with 4 hits on the day. McNamara combined a couple of hits in the 6th inning and again in the 7th to score a run in each frame and force the game into extra innings.

Ireton put runners into scoring position in the bottom of the 7th and again in the 8th innings and  furiously tried to get the winning run home.  But, McNamara’s solid pitching and flawless infield defense were able to get the runners at the plate.  The Mustangs pressed again in the 10th inning. The lead off runner reached on a single and worked her way around the bases before being  stopped at the plate with a sweep tag applied by the Ireton catcher.  But, a subsequent hit brought in the eventual game winner before Ireton ‘s batters were retired in order in the bottom of the 10th.

“It was a great softball game,” commented Ireton Coach Terri Pearson. “Our girls put everything they had into it and things just did not break our way today.”

Ireton’s final week of conference play continues Wednesday at Good Counsel and then the Cardinals host Seton for Senior Day on Thursday at Luckett Field.

Cards Dismantle St Mary’s Ryken in Softball

Freshman Susie Rhodes has been part of a great class of freshmen contributors to the 2011 varsity squad currently tied for second in the WCAC heading into the final week of play.

Cardinal softball returned from spring break to defeat an undermanned Saint Mary’s Ryken team 23-0 in 5 innings on Saturday morning to improve to 11-6 overall and 7-4 in the WCAC.  Junior Katie Kiesner hit 2 home runs including a grand slam driving in 7 runs on the day.  Freshman Megan Sullivan also homered for the Cardinals.  Pitchers Micki Crouch and Susie Rhodes combined for a no hit performance and recorded 10 strikeouts.

The bats got started early for the Cardinals as they sent 11 batters to the plate in the first inning, scoring 8 runs.  Micki Crouch struck out the side in the second and the Ireton bats picked up where they left off with 7 more runs.  The Ryken squad, missing many of the varsity players to spring break, did not have an answer for Ireton’s strong pitching.

“It was a good game to shake off the rust after the break,” said Cardinal coach Terri Pearson.  “We have a huge week ahead as we finish up the regular conference schedule.  How well we do will determine our seeding in the WCAC tournament.”

Monday, the Mustangs of McNamara visit Luckett field, Wednesday the team travels to Good Counsel.  Senior Day is Thursday versus Elizabeth Seton and the squad finishes the regular season Friday afternoon at Paul the VI.
