Cardinal softball got back on the winning track on Wednesday with a 4-0 blanking of a much improved Good Counsel squad. Pitcher Micki Crouch, with 10 strikeouts and allowing just four hits, was backed up by error free fielding to shut down the Good Counsel offense. With the win, the Cardinals stretch their record to 12-7 on the year.
Ireton started the game strong in the first inning with a single from freshman Heather Pearson who was moved up by Debbie Ward. A Susie Rhodes double then drove Pearson home with the first run of the game. The 1-0 lead would stand through much of the game as neither team could mount a rally. Of note, Emily Quinn got 2 hits in 2 at bats and together with Caroline Boddie executed perfect bunts. Debbie Ward smacked a triple. In the final inning, Junior Jessie Taylor led off with a walk which was followed with a single by Micki Couch. Heather Pearson then hit a double, clearing the bases to make the score 3-0. Susie Rhodes then delivered another RBI as she brought Pearson in from second. Ireton’s defense played another tight bottom half of the 7th to end the game.
Ireton has two regular season games remaining before they start WCAC tournament play next week.
