Cardinals wrap up league championships, head to Philly's Stotesbury Regatta next
At this past weekend’s WMIRA League Championship the Bishop Ireton Rowing team continued a strong season with three Silver Medal finishes and one Bronze Medal finish. After an undefeated regular season the Girl’s Varsity boat finished second behind a dominant Walt Whitman High School to match their impressive finish from last year. Not to be outdone, the Girl’s Junior Varsity boat squeezed into the medals with a third place finish behind Whitman and Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School.
The Boys’ side also saw it’s share of success on the race course Saturday with a second place finish in the Boys’ Novice event – boding well for the coming years. Then, to finish off the day, the Boys’ Varsity boat came back after a disappointing defeat in the heats to win the Petite (second level) final by a wide margin.
“As the head coach I am very proud of every Ireton boat that competed today,” exclaimed Coach Eric Gehrke when asked about the results, “But we are far from our top goals for this program. We will take the brief moment to celebrate our immediate successes and then we will move forward understanding that progress is still needed. Although, it never hurts to have a medal around your neck to keep you going.”
The Cardinals will be closing out their season this upcoming weekend in Philadelphia, PA at the Stotesbury Cup Regatta where they will be able to not only face the boats they raced in the WMIRA Championships but also a majority of the fastest boats in the nation.
