Bishop Ireton’s girls lacrosse team (12-8) and softball team (13-7) enter Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association (VISAA) playoffs Tuesday. Both squads finished the WCAC regular season in third place. The softball team was bounced from the Conference tourney by eventual champion, Bishop O’Connell, while the lacrosse girls were given the gate by Holy Cross, the number 2 seed in the post season. The softball team drew a 5 seed and the lax girls a #6 seed.
The lacrosse team, under new Coach Rick Sofield head to Richmond for a rematch with Collegiate School at 4:30pm. The Cougars turned back Ireton in overtime in the first meeting in Richmond on April 26th. Meanwhile, the softball team under Terri Pearson returns to St Stephens for a 4:30pm start. The Saints upended the Cardinals on St Stephens Road in April with a 7-5 win.
If the Cardinals advance Tuesday, they both will face a long road trip for the semifinals. The softball team would head to Petersburg, Virginia, on Thursday for a likely match-up with O’Conell, while the lacrosse championships will be held at Old Dominion University in Norfolk on Friday and Saturday.
