The Lady Cardinals erupted for 6 runs in the 7th inning Friday, May 6th to end their regular season with an 8-6 come from behind win against Paul the VI. With the win they head into the WCAC tournament tied for 3rd place with a 10-6 conference record and 13-8 overall.
PVI got on the board first, scoring a run in each of the first two innings. Pitcher Micki Crouch then cruised through the 3rd, 4th and 5th innings, retiring 9 straight Panther batters. Ireton evened the score at 2 in the top of the 5th on four consecutive hits from Caroline Boddie, Micki Crouch, Heather Pearson and Debbie Ward. In the sixth, PVI took the lead again when an 0-2 pitch was sent over the right field fence for a solo homerun making the score 3-2.
Going into the last inning behind by one, Caroline Boddie led off with her second hit of the day. She was brought home to tie the score by a Crouch double. Heather Pearson reached on a single before Debbie Ward fired a line drive over the center field fence for a 3 run homer making the score 6-3. But, the Cardinals weren’t done. After 2 quick outs, Katie Kiesner singled and advanced to third on a hard hit double to left field by Megan Sullivan. In the next at bat, Emily Quinn put the ball in play to score Kiesner. Caroline Boddie picked up where she left off and collected her third hit of the day to score Sullivan, making the score 8-3 heading into the last of the 7th.
PVI mounted a furious comeback. With one out, 5 consecutive batters got on the bases on 4 hits and a walk leading to 3 runs. With runners on first and second with one out, Micki Crouch and the defense stiffened to collect the final two outs to seal the 8-6 victory.
“I’m so proud of the girls,” beamed Ireton Coach Terri Pearson. “After 4 tough games this week they came back twice today to get this important win. Hopefully, we can ride this momentum into the tournament.”
Remarkably, the two teams meet again on Tuesday at Luckett field for the first round of the WCAC tournament.
