Freshman Susie Rhodes has been part of a great class of freshmen contributors to the 2011 varsity squad currently tied for second in the WCAC heading into the final week of play.
Cardinal softball returned from spring break to defeat an undermanned Saint Mary’s Ryken team 23-0 in 5 innings on Saturday morning to improve to 11-6 overall and 7-4 in the WCAC. Junior Katie Kiesner hit 2 home runs including a grand slam driving in 7 runs on the day. Freshman Megan Sullivan also homered for the Cardinals. Pitchers Micki Crouch and Susie Rhodes combined for a no hit performance and recorded 10 strikeouts.
The bats got started early for the Cardinals as they sent 11 batters to the plate in the first inning, scoring 8 runs. Micki Crouch struck out the side in the second and the Ireton bats picked up where they left off with 7 more runs. The Ryken squad, missing many of the varsity players to spring break, did not have an answer for Ireton’s strong pitching.
“It was a good game to shake off the rust after the break,” said Cardinal coach Terri Pearson. “We have a huge week ahead as we finish up the regular conference schedule. How well we do will determine our seeding in the WCAC tournament.”
Monday, the Mustangs of McNamara visit Luckett field, Wednesday the team travels to Good Counsel. Senior Day is Thursday versus Elizabeth Seton and the squad finishes the regular season Friday afternoon at Paul the VI.
