Cardinals split pair of nailbiters on road to end regular lax season 11-7

Defenders, including senior Oliva O"Sullivan (9), will be important to the Cardinals ability to make a run deep in the conference and state playoffs

Bishop Ireton’s girls lacrosse ended their first season under Coach Rick Sofield 11-7 with a pair of non conference contests on the road.  The Cardinals squared off with the Cougars of Collegiate School, the VISAA’s number 3 ranked team, and battled to a 15-13 setback in overtime on the Richmond school’s senior day before bouncing back the next day at Stone Ridge.

Ireton played well after the long bus ride in stormy conditions, with goalie Maggie Covert making 14 saves on the day, including a number of spectacular stops in the hectic second half.

Collegiate broke in front on the opening draw and the Alexandrians struggled through the first half to stay close, trailing by a pair at the half.  The second half has become a “friend” to the Cardinals and Thursday was no different as the cardinal-clad visitors tied the score then traded goals throughout the final half. Senior Sarah Rupp gave Ireton its only lead of the day with little more than 2 minutes remaining at 13-12, but the redbirds would not score again.

In the first of two 3-minute overtime periods, the Cougars tallied a pair of goals while stonewalling the Cardinals. Neither team could score in the final overtime period, and the contest went to the home standing Collegiate School, another disappointingly close loss.

Friday, the Cardinals climbed on the bus to head north to Bethesda where Stone Ridge awaited fresh off their own Thursday win over Madeira.  Once again the Cardinals found themselves in a dogfight on a small, grass field, a surface they have seen little of this season.

The Cards could not shake the determined Gators and the lead seesawed back and forth with the home team clinging to a 7-5 advantage at halftime.  As is becoming their trademark, however, Ireton came out strong in the second half to tie and battle goal for goal until  Margaret Nealon and Kathryn Gasper tallied to give Ireton a two goal advantage. The Gators would close it to a single goal, but the redbirds denied them over the final 3 minutes for the win, 11-10.

The WCAC’s third-seeded Cardinals will host sixth-seeded Elizabeth Seton on Tuesday at 4:30 in the quarterfinals of the league’s championship tournament.  The winner will likely head to Kensington, Maryland, on Thursday to face number two seed, Holy Cross, a 12-11 winner over Ireton in the regular season.   The Tartans host Paul VI in their opening round.
