The Washington Catholic Athletic Conference (WCAC) announced their 2011 all conference teams Friday and three Cardinals were among the 17 girls selected first team. Seniors Sarah Rupp (UC, Davis) was selected for the second time in her high school career as a midfielder and Katherine Simmons (SDSU) was likewise tapped for a second season as a defender. Junior attack Madeline Zeigler made her first all conference first team appearance in 2011.
Bishop Ireton, finishing third in the regular season and dumped from the playoffs in the semifinals by Holy Cross for a second straight year, landed five girls on the Conference’s second team, including juniors Eva Irwin, Margaret Nealon, Ellie Marrin, Ciana Puglise and sophomore Gabby Barowski. Goalie Maggie Covert, Aubrey Gartlan, Olivia O’Sullivan, and Kathryn Gasper were honorable mentions on the WCAC listings.
Good Counsel, the overwhelming regular season and tournament champions, garnered the major awards league-wide. In addition to 7 first team, all conference selections, the Falcons’ Caileigh Sindal, a defender bound for UNC, Chapel Hill, was selected the player-of-the-year and Good Counsel skipper, Mike Haight was honored as the coach-of-the-year.
