Great preseason has Cardinals excited for softball home opener Tuesday

Debbie Ward will play a big part in Bishop Ireton's season according Coach Terri Pearson

After playing three scrimmages in three days, the Bishop Ireton softball team is ready to open the season Tuesday afternoon at Luckett field against the Cadets of Saint Johns.  The scrimmages against West Potomac, Wakefield and Flint Hill provided the game like conditions which fine tuned the team for the start of the season.

Wednesday night against a talented West Potomac squad Senior Micki Crouch split the pitching time with Sophomore Susie Rhodes.  They were matched up with battery mates Debbie Ward and Heather Pearson.  Katie Kiesner displayed her versatility playing both first and second base.  At the end of the regulation 7 innings the Cardinals had done very well for themselves.

Thursday’s scrimmage with Wakefield gave Coach Pearson the chance to a good look all her players in a game stituation.  Crouch again started at pitcher, walking two and hitting two batsman before settling down for a smooth second inning.  Susie Rhodes finished the game striking out 9, while Crouch moved to short stop and went 2 for 4 at the plate.  It was another strong outing for the Cardinals in their preseason preparation.

The wind and cold on Friday afternoon at Flint Hill did not cool off the cardinal bats.  Debbie Ward, went 4 for 5 including a home run while driving in 4. Susie Rhodes went 3 for 5 and hit a home run of her own while pitching the whole game. The outfield of Kathleen Walsh, Maria Manzek, Katie Milam and Chrissy Snyder played tremendous defense handling wind blown balls throughout the cold afternoon.  Once again, Ireton had a dominating preseason performance.

“The scrimmages gave our captains the opportunity to set the expectations for our new players while all the girls had the chance to play at game speed and see a wide variety of pitchers,” commented head coach Terri Pearson.  “We were able to get better looks at the players and move them around the diamond to see what combinations of players and positions work best.  We’ll take a well deserved rest over the weekend and be ready to start the regular season.”

The Cardinals open the season at home Tuesday at 4 pm against the Cadets of St Johns, then host perennial WCAC power Bishop O’Connell on Thursday.
Friday afternoon they travel to Richmond for a Saturday double header against St. Catherine’s and St. Anthony’s of Long Island, New York.

Cardinals 6-1 win opens baseball campaign

Cardinals will rely on strong pitching and good defense in the 2012 season. Cody Hagenston, above, notched Ireton's first win of the season with 5 strong innings allowing one run to pick up the win.

Bishop Ireton’s Cody Hagenston pitched 5 strong innings, allowing only a Saints’ Joe Warren solo homer in the first, as the Cardinals rallied for 4 runs in the top of the fifth to open the 2012 season with a 6-1 road win in a city rivalry game at St Stephens/St Agnes School Saturday.  It was the opener for both ball clubs.

The Saints rode the Warren homer into the fourth before Ireton tied the game at 1-1.  The redbirds exploded for 4 more in the fifth and added one in the sixth to seal the win.

“We played well for our first game.” said Ireton skipper, Mike Gallagher. “We won’t be a home run slugging team, but when we play solid defense we will be right there most times.” The Cardinals got some steady bat work from junior Scott Schwartz and senior Sean Boldaji; both of whom executed squeeze bunts to plate runners for the visitors.

The Ireton home opener is Monday, March 12th when the Wolves of Pope Jobn Paul the Great visit Frank Mann Field. First pitch is set for 5:30pm.

Girls lax Eyes 2012 Season

Senior Maddy Zeigler leads a strong class of seniors into the 2012 season. The returning first team, all WCAC and all-state performer will be a key part of the Cardinals this spring.

The Bishop Ireton girls lacrosse team enters the 2012 season with a strong combination of experienced players and new, younger players.  The team should have more depth than in past seasons and looks to build on the program’s success, according to head coach Rick Sofield, entering his second campaign at the helm of the Cardinals.

Bishop Ireton will be challenged this season with one of the toughest schedules in the area.  In addition to competing in the WCAC, one of the top high school athletic conferences in the country, the Cardinals play four defending state champions and dropped every out of conference opponent that they beat last season from their schedule with one exception.

Despite the challenging schedule and influx of new players, ESPN has ranked the Cardinals No. 2 in Viriginia going into the season (see: http://espn.go.com/blog/high-school/lacrosse/post/_/id/4104/state-rankings-girls-preseason).  The girls from Cambridge Road will need to be well-prepared and play at a consistently high-level to earn such lofty recognition.  And, it starts fast with Georgetown Visitation for the season opener at Fannon Field on Wednesday, March 14th at 4pm.

Ireton travels to 2011 state finalist, Collegiate School on Friday, March 16 and Cape Henry Collegiate on Saturday before returning to Alexandria to challenge powerhouse, St Stephens/St Agnes on Monday March 19 on St Stephens Road, all in week one!

Mens’ Lax Anxious for a New Season

Over 60 players turned out to compete for the 2012 lacrosse program.

Starting back is September, the lacrosse team had a goal, improve play in the WCAC and close the gap between them and the historically better teams. The motto of “Burn the Boats” was adopted by the team. The story of Burn the Boats goes back to Hernando Cortez, searching for gold and land in the new world. He instructed his captains and men to Burn the Boats, he was so set on achieving his goal, that he didn’t want to offer them a way out.

The men’s lacrosse team is set on the goal of improving and will not settle for the easy way out. The men’s lacrosse team is focused on each other, no stars, no standout players or personalities for this squad, according to head coach Jon Reed, in his second season with Bishop Ireton.  “We are a Team and can not function without each player on the team. We are excited to represent Bishop Ireton, and hope you come out and enjoy one of our games.” c9mmented the Cardinals’ coach.

Bishop Ireton will conclude their preseason with scrimmmages at Fannon Field on Mar 7th with Forest Park and March 8th with Edison, before opening the regular season on March 13th with their home opener with Potomac School. Game time is 4pm.

Bishop Ireton baseball looking for big things in 2012

Cardinal pitching is expected to be a strong part of the 2012 ball club.

The Bishop Ireton Cardinals begin the 2012 campaign with much excitement.  A roster of 15 players, 13 of whom are varsity returners, make the expectations high for this junior-senior heavy team, according to head coach, Mike Gallagher.

All-WCAC selection Andrew Selby will sit in the middle of the order and anchor the outfield for the Cardinals.  Junior catcher Corey Phillips, who has caught every inning on the varsity level since his freshman year, will command the pitching staff. Phillips should be a spark in the top of the line-up, coming off a sophomore season in which he hit .325.

On the mound, the Cardinals return 90 percent of their innings pitched  from a year ago, including starters Cody Hagenston and Jake Guttman who should get the ball in big game situation for Bishop Ireton.  This group displays more depth on the mound and at all positions then last years team as the Cardinals look to return to the WCAC finals for the first time since there back to back run in 2008 and 2009.

The Cardinals have battled weather in their preseason games, losing a scrimmage with TC Williams to Mother Nature and South County rescheduled to Tuesday, Mar 6.  Ireton will conclude the scrimmage portion of the schedule on Thursday at West Potomac, then open the 2012 campaign with St Stephens/St Agnes on the road. FIrst pitch with the Saints on Saturday, March 10th is 3:30pm.
