The Bishop Ireton Cardinals begin the 2012 campaign with much excitement. A roster of 15 players, 13 of whom are varsity returners, make the expectations high for this junior-senior heavy team, according to head coach, Mike Gallagher.
All-WCAC selection Andrew Selby will sit in the middle of the order and anchor the outfield for the Cardinals. Junior catcher Corey Phillips, who has caught every inning on the varsity level since his freshman year, will command the pitching staff. Phillips should be a spark in the top of the line-up, coming off a sophomore season in which he hit .325.
On the mound, the Cardinals return 90 percent of their innings pitched from a year ago, including starters Cody Hagenston and Jake Guttman who should get the ball in big game situation for Bishop Ireton. This group displays more depth on the mound and at all positions then last years team as the Cardinals look to return to the WCAC finals for the first time since there back to back run in 2008 and 2009.
The Cardinals have battled weather in their preseason games, losing a scrimmage with TC Williams to Mother Nature and South County rescheduled to Tuesday, Mar 6. Ireton will conclude the scrimmage portion of the schedule on Thursday at West Potomac, then open the 2012 campaign with St Stephens/St Agnes on the road. FIrst pitch with the Saints on Saturday, March 10th is 3:30pm.
