With 75% of the varsity coaching staff joining the programthis spring, including head coach, Rita Williams, there is a newness to the routine in the track and field practices this spring. While distance coach Brad Byrnes returns, the Cardinals welcome throwing coach Jose Lopez and Glen Evelyn as the sprint and hurdles assistant in addition to Williams.
The distance runners will be once again a strong part of the Bishop Ireton squad. Senior Liam O’Connor and newcomer Conor Pearson lead the boys’ while Katie Necochea and Megan Reilly anchor the girls’ distance crew for Coach Byrnes.
The throwers, with a new coach, will see London Duckett and Sina Pooresmaeil on the girls’ side with shot and discus, while Weslie Young, Owen Beals, and Anthony Mondragon will work the boys’ side in the circle.
The sprinters have coaches anxious to get into competition. Senior Anna Wissler briefly held the School record in the 800 meters last season and has her eye on the mark this year. Lolontika Hoque is a freshman who is gettting comfortable in the high school competition and has coaches excited about her early season work. Justin Paige and Andrew Baehre are demonstrating the potential to score for the Cardinals this season , Baehre in the 400 and 800 meters while Paige will work the shorter distances. PJ Townley, another veteran sprinter/hurdler for Bishop Ireton, as been sidelined with injury, but his return to the lineup will strengthen the lineup for the Cardinals.
The Cardinals will open the outdoor season at the Screaming Eagle Invitational at Seneca Valley High School on Saturday, March 24th. The WCAC championships will be held once again at Good Counsel High School on Friday and Saturday, May 18th and 19th.
