Bishop Ireton’s Cody Hagenston pitched 5 strong innings, allowing only a Saints’ Joe Warren solo homer in the first, as the Cardinals rallied for 4 runs in the top of the fifth to open the 2012 season with a 6-1 road win in a city rivalry game at St Stephens/St Agnes School Saturday. It was the opener for both ball clubs.
The Saints rode the Warren homer into the fourth before Ireton tied the game at 1-1. The redbirds exploded for 4 more in the fifth and added one in the sixth to seal the win.
“We played well for our first game.” said Ireton skipper, Mike Gallagher. “We won’t be a home run slugging team, but when we play solid defense we will be right there most times.” The Cardinals got some steady bat work from junior Scott Schwartz and senior Sean Boldaji; both of whom executed squeeze bunts to plate runners for the visitors.
The Ireton home opener is Monday, March 12th when the Wolves of Pope Jobn Paul the Great visit Frank Mann Field. First pitch is set for 5:30pm.
