Cardinals hope to ride the pitching of senior Micki Crouch, a four-year varsity hurler for the squad.

The 2012 Bishop Ireton Softball team opens up the season this week planning to build on last year’s 15-10 record. Having graduated only two seniors, a solid and experienced squad returns supplemented with some fresh talent.

Senior all-state pitcher and Dickenson College recruit, Micki Crouch returns to the pitching circle where she will be caught by all WCAC senior Debbie Ward.  Last year’s standout first baseman, Katie Kiesner also returns with Chrissy Snyder to round out the strong senior class.   Juniors Emily Quinn and Kathleen Walsh return to patrol the outfield.

Sophomores Bridgette Degnan and Katie Milam have moved up from the junior varsity joining Maria Manzek, Megan Sullivan, and all WCAC sophomores Susie Rhodes and Heather Pearson. Katie Reilly is the lone freshman to earn a varsity spot this year.

Head coach Terri Pearson returns for her second year and will be assisted again by Juan Gonzalez.  A great addition to the squad is senior manager Abbey Steinberger who offers great support to both players and the coaching staff.  Seniors Micki Crouch, Katie Keisner, and Debbie Ward were chosen by their teammates to serve
as this year’s captains.

After scrimmages this week against West Potomac and Wakefield High Schools the Cardinals open the season on the road against Flint Hill on Friday, March 9th. The home opener against St. John’s is on Tuesday, March 13 th at 4PM at Luckett Field.  Other schedule highlights include a doubleheader in Richmond on St Patrick’s Day and a three day tournament over spring break in Myrtle Beach.

“We have a wonderful group of talented girls this year for our challenging schedule.”  said Coach Pearson.  “We’ll not only be playing in the competitive WCAC, but also have a number of games against other Virginia
independent schools and teams from New York and Ohio.”
