Gonzaga Survives Cardinals in OT, 71-67

Bishop Ireton (6-13, 1-10) battled WCAC heavyweight Gonzaga (18-4, 10-2) for 4 quarters and the Eagles would need an extra session for the second straight game to win, 71-67 in Washington.  After the Cardinals came out of the locker room strong, taking a 5-0 lead, Gonzaga slowly worked its way back and tied the contest at 15 after one period.

The clubs stood toe-to-toe in the second session, with Patrick Hanafin carrying the Cardinals in the offensive zone, 16 of his 20 points came in the first half; the teams went to the locker room with the purple and white clan home team up 35-30.

The struggle continued through the third period, setting up the dramatics of the final period. With 6:50 left to play in the game and Ireton trailing 44-43, Hanafin went to the bench with his fourth foul.  But by that stage, Hayes and Rouse had stepped up on the scoring front, while senior Marvin Elliott’s defense and the strong play on the glass by junior Tommy Gallinaro were keeping the Cardinals in the ballgame.

The teams traded baskets until Gonzaga held the ball for more than two minutes again the Ireton 2-3 zone defense, before Cedric Lindsey’s layup gave the home squad a 55-49 advantage. Hanafin and Antonio Rouse led the Cardinal counterattack cutting the deficit to 56-54.  Williams drained a pair of free throws to give Gonzaga a 58-54 lead with :48 remaining in the contest.

Gonzaga’s Thorton fouled Rouse, who made a pair of free throws to again draw Ireton within two, 58-56. Marcus Hayes became the first of three Cardinals to foul out when he left at :26 mark, but the Eagles missed both free throws, leaving Gonzaga with a 61-56 bulge. Another Rouse driving layup made it 61-58, Ireton fouled Cedric Lindsey who made both free throws with only :07 left on the clock to up the lead to 63-60, setting up Rouse’s heroics.  The Cardinals in bounded the ball and Rouse fought through tight Eagles’ defense and threw up a tough shot just beyond the 3 point arc that was nothing but net as time expired to knot the contest at 63 all.

With Hanafin and Hayes fouled out, the Cardinals headed to overtime. Williams scored for Gonzaga. After an Ireton turnover, the Eagles again spread the floor against the Ireton zone. Cardinal skipper Neil Berkman apparently liked the Eagles’ strategy and the Cardinals sat back in the zone as time ran off the clock, Ireton again staying within one possession of the lead.  When Gonzaga attacked the basket Marvin Elliott fouled out, and Lindsey made a pair of free throws to push Gonzaga out to 69-65. Rouse answered for Ireton, but Lemmons made a pair of free throws in the game’s final seconds to secure the Gonzaga win.

“Patrick again played a great game, but Marcus Hayes really ran the club for us today and Antonio played exceptionally well” said Ireton’s head coach, Neil Berkman after the game. “Tommy Gallinaro has just become a warrior for us in the paint, and again Marvin Elliott’s defense, with those key steals; I can’t say enough about how well the team is playing right now, especially these last two games on the road.”  The need for strong play continues as Good Counsel makes its annual visit to Alexandria on Tuesday, tip off of the varsity contest is scheduled for 7:30pm before the club heads back on the road to Bishop McNamara on Friday.

Cardinals Overcome Lions in DC 48-44

Coach Neil Berkman earned his first WCAC win with a gutsy, never-say-die effort from the Cardinals at Archbishop Carroll (11-10, 4-8) Friday night 48-44.  After falling behind 19-5 early in the game, Berkman turned to the bench for some spark.

“What won this game was the ‘blue team’; Hargett, Walters, Jobin, Gutman, and Levy” praised the coach, “because they went in the second quarter and gave us a lift, energy, and a huge spark off the bench.” With that spark the Cardinals closed the gap to 30-20 at halftime.  The second half belonged to the Cardinals (6-12, 1-9).

“Antonio Rouse had 4 steals, a pair of three-point goals, and 13 points, making key plays in the final quarter.  Patrick (Hanafin) played his normal efficient game, with a 7 of 11 from the field and 7 rebounds.  Marcus Hayes added 13 points and made a key steal on a Carroll offensive rebound that sealed it for us late in the fourth.” continued Berkman.  “Marvin Elliott played a great game with 5 points, 3 assists, and no turnovers, which is huge. We got toughness from Tommy Gallinaro and Matt Barnwell which was evidenced by the rebounding.”

It was the Cardinals first WCAC win of the year, a game the Ireton skipper thinks can springboard the ballclub to more success. “If you look at the improvement throughout the season, this should not be a surprise.  We lost big to DeMatha in December, then had them within 4 in the fourth quarter in January. We have had Gonzaga, O’Connell, right there late.  I am glad that our team got the win because they have done what we have asked to improve every time out, this reinforces that message.” explained the first-year Cardinal mentor.

The win on the road reverses a 12-point setback in Alexandria on New Year’s weekend.  Ireton held Carroll’s Kenny Cherry to only 7 points in the contest with Weaver leading the Lion’s with 13 on the evening. Ireton shot a respectable 13 for 19 from the charity stripe while allowing the home squad only 11 opportuities from the free throw line, where they converted 8.

Ireton travels to Eye Street in Washington for a Sunday matinee with Gonzaga before returning home for the first of two meetings with Good Counsel’s Falcons. Cards tip off, weather depending, at 3:15pm at Gonzaga and plan a 7:30pm start with the Falcons on Tuesday.  Fans can check the Bishop Ireton website for Gonzaga game status on Sunday morning.

Lions Pull Away to top Cardinals 59-49

Archbishop Carroll (8-8, 3-7) came to Father Godley Gym Friday night, one night after dropping a hard fought contest with powerhouse St John’s, and the Cardinals (8-14, 0-11)worked hard to take advantage of the weary Lions.  Ireton came out fast with the help of strong defense that caused a flood of Lion turnovers, grabbing an 8-1 lead early.   Carroll shook off those early problems and embarked on the first of two 8-0 runs they would throw at the Cardinals to get back in the game and pull away in the final quarter for a tough 59-49 win in Alexandria.

Ireton held a slim 10-9 advantage after one quarter, but a familiar plight, the lack of sustained scoring, found the Cardinals heading to the locker room down 23-15 at the half. Carroll used another 8-0 run during the quarter and only the pesky defensive effort that stymied 6’3″ Dominque Powell inside kept the game that close.  Turnovers plaqued Ireton throughout the contest but the girls continued to battle the bigger Lions.

The third quarter started much like the first, with the Cardinals converting a pair of Carroll turnovers into layups, quickly closing the gap to 23-19. The Lion’s Powell picked up her 3rd personal foul with 6:05 to play in the third, and Bianca Ojiegbe’s 2 free throws drew Ireton to within 27-25.  Both teams continued trading baskets, but when Powell went to the bench with her 4th personal with 3:35 to play, Ireton seized the momentum and regained the lead at 30-29 just under 2 minutes to play in the third.  Carroll’s Diondra Daniel, with a game-high 20 points turned up the pressure, however, and three quick baskets gave the Lions a 35-30 lead after three quarters.

Carroll pressed the attack in the final stanza and the lead ballooned to 42-32, as the Cardinals continued to go to the basketball but couldn’t get a shot to fall.  Free throws would begin to draw Ireton closer and Alexis Thurmond’s acrobatic layup pulled the Cardinals back to 42-38. Carroll’s Daniel hit a three, senior Marianna Habib responded with 2, senior Sarah Baldwin made a pair of free throws to close the game to 45-42. Daniel became a one-woman wrecking crew to Cardinal comeback hopes however as  she drained a pair of three pointers following a layup and the Lions had raced away to 54-44 lead the Cardinals would not overcome.  Thurmond lead Ireton with 13 points, Helena Barber and Baldwin added 10 each for Cardinals.

Coach Hutton’s charges head north Tuesday to face WCAC contender Good Counsel before returning home to host first place Bishop McNamara on Friday. Both varsity contests tip off at 7:30pm.  In the earlier contests, Ireton’s freshmen handled Pope John Paul the Great’s JV Wolves 41-16 while the JV girls outlasted Carroll in their contest by 4.

Cards Host Gonzaga, Elizabeth Seton in ERG Regatta

On Saturday January 23rd, Bishop Ireton Crew hosted an indoor regatta against the Gonzaga and Seton Crews. Instead of racing on the water, the rowers raced on the erg machines. In the men’s 2000 meter race, Bishop Ireton Rowers Justin Roczniak and Jimmy Fonda took second and third, respectively. Justin Rocniak was only one tenth of a second behind winner David White from Gonzaga. On the women’s side, Bishop Ireton took first and third. High flying Cardinals keep winning

The Bishop Ireton Ice Hockey team continued its’ winning ways over the MLK holiday weekend with a pair of NVSHL victories.  Their 6-0 league record has them tied atop the standings with Robinson and Stonebridge as the only remaining undefeated teams.

The weekend opened with a Friday night affair against an undermanned but determined Yorktown squad at the Kettler Capitals Iceplex in Ballston.  Despite outshooting the Patriots 34-15, the Cardinals could not put away the tough Yorktown team.  Only after time expired in the final period did the Ireton team breathe a collective sigh of relief in the form of a 4-2 decision.  The Cardinals’ offense was led by Reid Yager and Tom Cyrnak, each with a goal and 2 assists, and William Chastain with a goal and 1 assist.  Rounding out the scoring was Jimmy Smith with 1 goal, and Dave Souliotis with a single assist.

Monday, January 18th, brought an afternoon date at SkateQuest Reston with a combined W-L/TC Williams team.  The Generals are in a rebuilding process and their inexperience was no match for the high-powered Ireton offense.  After falling behind early, 2-1, the Cardinals reeled off 11 unanswered goals, dominating play at both ends of the ice, and culminating in a 12-2 victory.  Tom Cyrnak (3 goals, 3 assists) and Dillon Roach (3 goals, 1 assist) led the Cardinal attack on this day, with support from Reid Yager (2 and 4) and William Chastain (2 and 1).  Single goals were contributed by Dave Souliotis and Joe Lavelle.  Additional assists were recorded by Ben Gerke (2), and Joe Lavelle and Tom Casey with 1 each.  Robert Chastain picked up the victory in net by stopping 12 of 14 shots, raising his record to 9-0 overall.

The Cardinals next game is home at the Mount Vernon Rec. Center on Monday, January 25th, at 5:45 pm against Oakton.

Cardinals let one slip away, 54-52

Senior Sarah Baldwin’s game high 20 points kept the Cardinals close, but National Cathedral School’s quickness and defense upended Ireton 54-52 in a varsity contest in Alexandria Wednesday night.  More than 40 turnovers plagued the redbirds who never seemed to get untracked and chased the purple-clan Eagles throughout the game.

NCS grabbed an early lead before Ireton’s Baldwin hit back-to-back three’s with 2:30 left in the first quarter to give the Cards their first lead at 11-8. The Eagles regrouped to regain the lead and the teams traded baskets until senior Alexis Thurmond hit a pair of free throws to tie the contest at 17. Freshman Camille Webber’s free throw put Ireton up 18-17 and Alex McCargo’s put back shot gave Ireton its biggest lead of the night at 20-17.  NCS went on to score the final 4 points of the half and carried a 21-20 lead into the break.

The squads continued to battle in the tight game throughout the third quarter with NCS nursing a 40-37 advantage after three quarters. Sophomore Helena Barber would make a pair of free throws to get Ireton to 42-41 and after an Eagle layup, Baldwin drained a three to tie the game at 44-44. Webber hit a layup to give Ireton a 46-44 edge before NCS answered with a three to regain the lead.

The Cardinals muscled the offensive zone to get a put back bucket to give them their last lead at 50-49 but another three point jumper and a free throw late sealed the NCS win. Sydni Oliver had a putback basket with :14 left in the game, but a desparation 25 foot jumper by Alexis Thurmond hit the rim and bounced off to end the contest.  NCS advances to 3-6 on the season while the Cardinals fall to 8-10 on the campaign. No rest for the Cards as they hit the road for a 7:30 tip-off with Holy Cross Thursday night and return home for a 3:15 tilt with Flint Hill School Saturday.

Ireton’s freshmen withstood the NCS JV girls last minute rally and missed layup to steal a 26-24 win the preliminary contest in Fr. Godley Gym.

Indoor Track Runs at Maroon and Black Relays

Indoor track is alive and well at BI.  This past weekend the BI indoor track team competed in Episcopal’s Maroon and Black relays.  This is a first for the Cardinals who now compete under the club banner.  The team is coached by Tracey Golden who volunteers his time to work with the athletes.

Indoor track is the cornerstone between not only cross country and track, but an important off season activity for football, soccer, and lacrosse to name but a few of the sports benefiting from the winter workouts.  Many track athletes use this time to develop their racing form and sprint legs.  Meets also feature long jumps,  high jumps, and shotput.  Approximately 20 runners are competing under the BI banner this winter.

Anchored by state champion Shannon Gordon, the girls finished second overall in a meet that included St Stephens, Episcopal, Gonzaga, and Georgetown Day.   Shannon was first in the long jump, and second in the 55 meter hurdles.  Katarina Axenfeld was fourth in the long jump.  Hannah Thomas was first in the High Jump.

The boys team includes a number of our championship cross country runners who are on pace to send a first time 4 x800 team to the Penn Relays.  The 4 x 800 has a very competitive qualifying team of Stiers, Kicinski, Costigan, and Anderson.   Sam Ferrera and BJ Townley also competed this past Saturday at Episcopal.

This “duals” tournament guaranteed eight matches to each of the fourteen schools that participated. Among those teams that competed were several of Maryland’s top wrestling teams and over twenty The competition was fierce, but Ireton grapplers stepped up to this challenge without hesitation and surprised many of their opponents by demonstrating just how tough a Cardinal can be. Coach Don Dight’s team went 3-5 but the wrestlers were hardened by the higher level of competition, according to the Ireton skipper.   “This will pay us dividends hopefully when the WCAC and state tournament time comes.  We will be used to tough competition and a lot of it.”
