Cardinals Dominate the Knights, 57-17

The Cardinals rode 7 falls and 2 forfeit wins to a 57-17 thrashing of the defending WCAC wrestling team champions, Bishop O’Connell in Godley Gym Monday morning.  Led by senior Kevin Galloway’s pin of freshman Ray Davies in 17 seconds and Elliot Mondragon’s pin in 19 seconds, the Alexandrians put the most one-sided dual loss on their rivals in many years.

Mondragon started the MLK Day morning off with a quick pin, but junior Jacob Ramos of O’Connell scored a major decision over Ireton’s Darcy Gomez to pull the Knights to within 6-4. The Knights forfeited at 119 then senior Andrew Georgeieff held off sophomore Charles DiGiulian 7-6 to up the Cardinal advantage to 15-4.  O’Connell’s Dale Mullane won a wild 10-7 win over Corey Phillips at 130 pounds, riding the Cardinal freshman for the entire third period to nail down the decision.

Ireton’s Nick Womack pinned Curt Hansen in 47 seconds of the first period to regain the momentum for the home team and DJO forfeited the 140 weight class, ballooning the advantage to 27-7.  Captain Joe Vitale added a pin at 2:19 over Kyle Soriente and Ryan Delaney pinned Gabe Perez to push the lead to 39-7.  Knight senior Luke Milligan handlled Scott Martin in the 160 bout, but Galloway, sophomore Andrew Lutterloh, and senior Jake Manley closed the meet with first period falls to pad the sizeable margin for Ireton. The Cardinals, battling injuries, forfeited at 215.

Fresh off the toughest dual meet schedule in recent years at the Cavalier Duals, where the Cardinals went 3-5 against some of the toughest wrestling teams in the area, including Old Mill, Archbishop Spalding, and Arundel High School, the squad looked ready for their diocesan rivals. The Cardinals topped George Mason, Northeast High School and Joe Vitale’s key win led the cardinal and gold  by Stone Bridge 35-33 over the long weekend.

O’Connell pulls away for 53-44 win

Neil Berkman’s Cardinals played a scrappy, never-give-up ballgame as they hosted Bishop O”Connell Friday night in Godley Gym, falling to the Arlington visitors 53-44.   The Knights came out shot of a cannon in the first quarter, junior Larry Savage scoring 7 of his 20 points in the opening Stanza. and giving DJO an 18-6 lead after one period.

But the Cardinals shut down the blue and sliver with smothering defense and hustle to throw a 14-0 run on the Knights.  In fact, O’Connell scored but a lone free throw in a dreadful second quarter for the Knights and went to the locker room down 20-19.

Coach Joe Wooten challenged his squad at the half to “run their offense”. “You have to attack a zone defense, we did that in the third quarter.” explained the DJO skipper.  Savage was a large part of that attack as he had dunks on consecutive possessions during an 8-0 O’Connell run to open the third quarter.

Ireton answered with a run of their own as junior Antonio Rouse hit a jumper and Patrick Hanafin made back-to-back three pointers and cut the advantage to 29-28. The teams traded baskets and Rouse’s three made it 35-31 after three quarters.

Hanafin would hit another three to open the final period, drawing the Cardinals to 37-34, but would get no closer. O’Connell used its size inside and rode the clock as the teams exchanged baskets but Ireton never getting closer than 4, it’s last look 45-41 with 1:25 to play.  From there Ireton was in the foul and chase mode to try to make up ground, but the Knights steadily pulled away for the 53-44 finish.

The Cardinals fall to 5-8 on the season, 0-6 in the rugged WCAC while the Knights improved to 7-6, 3-4 in the conference play.  Ireton hosts St Mary Ryken Tuesday in Godley Gym.

JV boys continued their strong season with a 70-52 thumping of O’Connell. Malcolm Westbrook lead all scorers with 26 points for the Cardinals. Ireton fell behind 4-0 in the contest before going on a 23-2 run to blow the game open in the first quarter.

Wrestlers piling up dual meet wins

Saturday’s  dual meet wins against St. Albans School and Pope John Paul the Great were the last of seven duals, all of which were wrestled in a very busy three days. Once the dust settled, Ireton’s record improved to 11-1, which is one win better than this same time last year.

The three days began on Thursday night  with two victories in Richmond against Prep league schools Richmond Collegiate and Norfolk Academy. The matches ran late into the evening and wrestlers were undoubtedly exhausted during their late evening and snowy drive home from Richmond, but all were content with the outcome of the evening matches as theIreton wrestlers achieved a decisive 41-24 victory over Norfolk Academy and an even more decisive 45-18 win against Richmond Collegiate. The evening was filled with lots of exciting moments and a few pleasant surprises.

In the first match against Norfolk Academy sophomore Darcy Gomez set the pace with a 3:39 pin against his opponent at 112lbs. This was followed by pins from Andrew Bladen (3:06) at 171lbs; Andrew Lutterloh (1:20) at 215lbs; and Elliot Mondragon (1:23) at 103lbs.  Of special note was the pin achieved by Brandon Razkallah in 3:32 at 189lbs in his first varsity match for Bishop Ireton.  For this match the Cardinals also welcomed returning senior Andrew Georgieff who has recovered from an ankle injury and achieved a 14-1 major decision victory in first match of the season at 130lbs. Additional wins were achieved by Jeff Severini (5-1) at 119lbs; and Nick Womach (16-4) at 135lbs. Fastest pin of match and the evening was achieved by sophomore Andrew Lutterloh.

Against Richmond Collegiate, senior Andrew Georgieff set the pace with a 1:23 pin against his opponent at 125lbs. This was followed by one additional pin in 2:36 by Elliot Mondragon at 103lbs. Equally important wins were achieved by Ryan Delaney (10-4) at 152lbs; Scott Martin (1-0) at 160; and Andrew Lutterloh (8-4) at 215lbs. Fastest pin of this match goes to returning senior Andrew Georgieff.

Following the trip to Richmond against Collegiate and Norfolk Academy, the Cards competed in the Alexandria City Duals, against St. Stephens St. Agnes (SSSA), Episcopal, and TC Williams and tied for first place with SSSA and Episcopal. This quad meet was a challenging evening of three dual meets, but three wrestlers walked away from the competition with 3 wins and 0 losses, Elliot Mondragon (103), Joe Vitale (145), and Andrew Lutterloh (215). Ireton opened with TC Williams. Unlike previous years, TC Williams had wrestlers at all but two weight classes, with very talented wrestlers in three.  Despite this, the red and gold grapplers defeated the Titans with an impressive score of 52-21. The first pin of this match was by freshman Nick Womach, who pinned his opponent in 4:45 at 135lbs. This was followed by pins from senior Ryan Delaney in 4:00 at 152lbs, team captain and senior Kevin Galloway in :33 at 171lbs, and sophomore Andrew Lutterloh in :32 at 215lbs, which was also the fastest pin of the match and the day.  Sophomore Darcy Gomez achieved an additional win (9-4) at 112lbs.

While invigorating, the success heavy schedule of duals may have taken its toll with the lads, as they fell to Episcopal in a close 37-27 dual tally. Only two of our wrestlers walked away from this match with pins, junior Elliot Mondragon pinned his opponent in :56 at 103lbs, as did team captain and senior Joe  Vatalie at 130 lbs, junior Ricky Baier (8-2) at 140lbs, junior Andrew Bladen (12-7) at 160, and sophomore Andrew Lutterloh (11-5) at 215lbs. The fastest pin of this match was achieved by Elliot Mondragon.

Our final match of the day against St. Stephens St. Agnes was also the most exciting meet of the day. In this rivalry matchup Ireton took down the Saints with a thirteen point spread and final score of 35-22. This victory secured a championship tie because SSSA beat Episcopal earlier that afternoon by six points. Setting the pace for this victory were pins from junior Elliot Mondragon in 3:31 at 103lbs and team captain and senior Jacob Manley, who pinned his opponent in 1:32 at heavyweight.  Additional wins were achieved by freshman Nick Womach (5-3) at 135lbs, junior Ricky Baier (5-0) at 140lbs, Joe Vitale, who teched his opponent with a score of 17-0, and senior Ryan Delaney (6-3) at 152lbs. The fastest pin of this match was achieved by Jacob Manley.

On Saturday, our Cardinal grapplers competed against St. Albans and newcomers Pope John Paul the Great. In this match up our grapplers once again demonstrated their talent by defeating the JPG Wolves with a score of 56-24. Setting the pace were pins from junior Elliot Mondragon in 1:09 at 103lbs, sophomore Darcy Gomez in 1:34 at 112lbs, team captain and senior Joe Vitale in 2:10 at 152lbs, and sophomore Andrew Lutterloh in 4:19 at 215lbs. Additional and equally important wins were achieved by Senior Andrew Georgeiff, who teched his opponent with a score of 18-2, and Ricky Baier who beat a very tough JPG wrestler at 140lbs.  Fastest pin of the match goes to Elliot Mondragon.

The final match of the week was against St. Albans.  The Cardinal grapplers defeated the Bulldogs 45-25. Pins were achieved by Junior Elliot Mondragon in :51, sophomore Darcy Gomez in 1:06, junior Ricky Baier in 3:31, sophomore Andrew Lutterloh in 1:17, and the fastest pin of the year so far was achieved by Jacob Manley, who pinned his opponent in an astounding :11.  Additional wins were achieved by Joe Vitale (7-0) wrestling up at 152lbs, sophomore Andrew Bladen (9-4), also wrestling up at 171, and the most inspiring win of the day was achieved by team captain and senior Kevin Galloway (7-0).

The particularly large contingent of Ireton supporters throughout the week were a point of comment by head coach Don Dight, “Of all the wrestling this week, from Richmond to Washington DC, we were certainly blessed by strong fan support. It started to feel like a home meet on occasion and the boys appreciated the strong support, particularly Friday night at the City championships.”

The Cards return to action against Maryland School for the Deaf and Silver Oak Academy at the MD School for the Deaf (101 Clarke Place, Frederick, MD 21701).  Wrestling begins at 4:30. Ireton wrestlers will travel to Archbishop Spalding to participate in the Cavalier Duals. This is a new competition for Bishop Ireton and promises to provide lots of challenges and wrestling opportunities for our grapplers. Fourteen schools will participate in this competition and unlike traditional tournaments,  where lesser wrestlers are eliminated after two losses, this competition promises at least eight matches for each team.

Hockey grabs pair of wins to open new year

The Bishop Ireton Ice Hockey team began 2010 the same way it ended 2009 – with a pair of victories.  The wins included a 6-2 thumping of a previously undefeated Robinson team in a non-league scrimmage, and a 6-0 whitewashing of a combined South Lakes/Marshall squad in a NVSHL tilt that allowed the Cardinals to remain undefeated in league play with a record of 5-0.

Monday, January 4th, saw a determined Robinson team come calling at the Mount Vernon Ice Rink.  The Cardinals offense was in high gear from the start, testing the Robinson goalie early and often.  When all was said and done, the Ireton scorers were led by William Chastain with a goal and 3 assists, Tom Cyrnak with 2 goals and 1 assist, Reid Yager with 2 goals, and Dillon Roach who contributed a goal and an assist.  Single assists were also credited to Dave Souliotis, Ben Gerke, Robert Chastain and Tom Casey.  Robert Chastain picked up the victory in net, his 6th of the season.

The Cardinals’ winning ways continued on Friday night, January 8th, with their first NVSHL game of the calendar year.  The South Lakes/Marshall squad brought a lot of speed to the contest at Mount Vernon Ice Rink, but that speed didn’t translate into much offense.  In a game that featured a combined 23 penalties between the teams, the Cardinals offense simply proved to be too much for the South Lakes team to handle.  When the dust had settled, the Cardinals potent offense outshot the Seahawks, 40-18, led once again by Reid Yager with 2 goals and 2 assists, and Tom Cyrnak with 2 goals and 1 assist.  Also scoring goals for Ireton were Dillon Roach and Joe Lavelle with one each, while single assists were recorded by Dan Tangora, Ben Gerke and James Smith.  Robert Chastain was solid in net, picking up his 7th victory and 3rd shutout of the 2009-10 campaign.

The Cardinals next game is Friday night, January 15th, against Yorktown at the Kettler Capitals Iceplex

Swim & Dive Records falling as Season progresses

Bishop Ireton’s swim team capped the early season successes, including a number of dual meet victories, with two school-record setting performances at the Seton Invitational Saturday in Manassas. Air Force Academy-bound senior Angus MacDonald broke Brian Bitner’s 18-year old 100 meter free style record with a time of :47.31 while the men’s 200 freestyle relay team broke a record set just last February with their time of 1:31.28. Angus MacDonald, Carey Natoli, Sam Ellis, Ryan Dougherty set that marker at the Freedom Center in Manassas as well.

It’s a big week ahead for Ireton as the boys square off with WCAC rival Gonzaga on Tuesday and PVI on Thursday. The girls host Elizabeth Seton on Tuesday and face the Panthers Thursday.  These follow on the heels of the Cardinals swamping St Stephens/St Agnes and TC Williams to retain the 2009 Alexandria City Swimming Championships at Chinquapin Park pool. They leveled Edmund Burke School as well, Women 152-25 Men 137-15.

15 swimmers have qualified at this point for the Catholic National Championships at Villanova in Philadelphia, as has all our relay teams.
