High flying Cardinals keep winning

The Bishop Ireton Ice Hockey team continued its’ winning ways over the MLK holiday weekend with a pair of NVSHL victories.  Their 6-0 league record has them tied atop the standings with Robinson and Stonebridge as the only remaining undefeated teams.

The weekend opened with a Friday night affair against an undermanned but determined Yorktown squad at the Kettler Capitals Iceplex in Ballston.  Despite outshooting the Patriots 34-15, the Cardinals could not put away the tough Yorktown team.  Only after time expired in the final period did the Ireton team breathe a collective sigh of relief in the form of a 4-2 decision.  The Cardinals’ offense was led by Reid Yager and Tom Cyrnak, each with a goal and 2 assists, and William Chastain with a goal and 1 assist.  Rounding out the scoring was Jimmy Smith with 1 goal, and Dave Souliotis with a single assist.

Monday, January 18th, brought an afternoon date at SkateQuest Reston with a combined W-L/TC Williams team.  The Generals are in a rebuilding process and their inexperience was no match for the high-powered Ireton offense.  After falling behind early, 2-1, the Cardinals reeled off 11 unanswered goals, dominating play at both ends of the ice, and culminating in a 12-2 victory.  Tom Cyrnak (3 goals, 3 assists) and Dillon Roach (3 goals, 1 assist) led the Cardinal attack on this day, with support from Reid Yager (2 and 4) and William Chastain (2 and 1).  Single goals were contributed by Dave Souliotis and Joe Lavelle.  Additional assists were recorded by Ben Gerke (2), and Joe Lavelle and Tom Casey with 1 each.  Robert Chastain picked up the victory in net by stopping 12 of 14 shots, raising his record to 9-0 overall.

The Cardinals next game is home at the Mount Vernon Rec. Center on Monday, January 25th, at 5:45 pm against Oakton.
