Fueled by the recent flurry of tough matches, the Cardinal grapplers defeated all competitors on Saturday at the first State Catholic School Tournament hosted by Benedictine High School in Richmond. As the clear leader in a field of five Catholic schools, the Ireton grapplers soundly defeated Peninsula Catholic (79-0), Roanoke Catholic (78-6), John Paul the Great (63-18), and host Benedictine (68-11).
The tournament in Richmond was preceded on Friday by a 52-18 Cardinal victory against the Landon Bears. Against Landon, Ireton dominated the match with five pins by Elliot Mondragon (:37), Arslan Ryspekov (3:18), Andrew Georgeiff (:54), Nick Womach (3:04), and team captain Kevin Galloway (:40). Additional wins were achieved by Darcy Gomez (9-7), Ricky Baier (7-2), and a major decision by team captain Joe Vitale (13-0).
Fastest pin of this match was achieved by Elliot Mondragon.
Against Peninsula Catholic the Cardinals shutout the Knights with pins from Tommy Dean (:50), and team captains Joe Vitale (2:44) and Jacob Manley (:43), which was also the fastest pin of the match. Additional wins were wrestled by Andrew Baehre (8-1), and a major decision by Ryan Delaney. Against the Roanoke Catholic Cadets Ireton won two of our three wrestled matches. Both were won by pins from Elliot Mondragon (1:16) and Darcy Gomez (1:00), which was also the fastest pin of the match.
Squaring off with tournament host Benedictine, Ireton won all but two individual matches. Ten were won by pins from Elliot Mondragon (1:01), Darcy Gomez (:38), Andrew Georgeiff (:23), Cory Phillips (2:40), Nick Womach (2:41), Ryan Delaney (5:43), Scott Martin (3:36), Kevin Galloway (1:32), Andrew Lutterloh (5:07), and Jacob Manley (:32). The two additional wins were from Ricky Baier (10-6), and a technical fall by Joe Vitale (18-3).
In our championship bout against Pope John Paul the Great, our Cardinal grapplers won all but three individual matches. Nine of those were pins from Elliot Mondragon (:59), Darcy Gomez (:51), Arslan Ryspekov (:54), Andrew Georgeiff (1:21), Cory Phillips (3:39), Joe Vitale (1:19), Ryan Delaney (5:16), Kevin Galloway (:20) and Jacob Manley (1:53). One additional win was wrestled by Ricky Baier (4-2).
With these bouts our team record stands at 21-6. Our next wrestling matches will be held at Paul VI (10675 Fairfax Blvd. Fairfax, VA 23221) on Tuesday, January 26, 2010 against WCAC rivals PVI and Dematha.
