On Saturday January 23rd, Bishop Ireton Crew hosted an indoor regatta against the Gonzaga and Seton Crews. Instead of racing on the water, the rowers raced on the erg machines. In the men’s 2000 meter race, Bishop Ireton Rowers Justin Roczniak and Jimmy Fonda took second and third, respectively. Justin Rocniak was only one tenth of a second behind winner David White from Gonzaga. On the women’s side, Bishop Ireton took first and third. Olivia Babiec won the event, with Helen Fonda finishing third.
After the 2000 meter races, the freshmen races a 1000 meter race. Bishop Ireton students took second in both the men and women’s events. Michelle Bouquet was second place for the women, and Josh Martini was second for the men. In addition, Michaela Mulokey, Tess McCabe, Rachel Youngberg, Allison Lee, Carolyn Riegel, and Kate Parry finished an impressive 5th through 10th place, leaving most of the Seton freshmen out of the top ten.
These results give the Ireton Crew a good idea of how they will fare next week when the team goes to the Mid-Atlantic Erg Sprints and face off against all the more than 50 other high school crews in the area.
