Judd’s Gem gives Cardinals first WCAC win, 8-1

Senior Andrew Selby is one of 4 seniors that will look to play in college after their final season at Bishop Ireton.

The Bishop Ireton Cardinals  surprised PVI behind a complete game by senior Ben Judd on Tuesday 8-1 at Paul VI’s Panther Field in seven innings.

Ireton scored three runs in the seventh on a two-run double by Corey Phillips and a wild pitch.   Phillips got on base four times in the game for the Cardinals, scoring two runs and collecting two RBIs.

Bishop Ireton relied on Ben Judd to eat up innings en route to the win. Judd pitched seven innings and allowed no earned runs, three hits, and one walk while striking out four.

The visitors never surrendered the lead after the third inning, scoring one run on an RBI single by junior  Joseph Bagnerise.

Ireton added three runs in the sixth inning, and matched that run total in the seventh. In the sixth, the Cardinals scored on an RBI single by Seth Scalsky, scoring John Todd.

Ireton rowers sprint past DeMatha, Elizabeth Seton in season opener

Ireton edged DeMatha in 2012 to open the season, they made it two in a row Saturday with a season-opening varsity win.

In the early morning on Saturday March 16th the Bishop Ireton Rowing team took on DeMatha and Seton in the Anacostia Invite, coming away victors in seven of eight events. Most notably, the Varsity mens and womens eights and fours came away victorious.

“I am very proud of how the entire program prepared for this early season regatta. We have overall season goals that are easy to become too focused on, while forgetting about the day to day necessities in training and the week to week opponents that you can’t look past,” head coach Eric Gehrke was quoted as saying, “but the athletes have kept themselves grounded and focused on the detailed process we have laid out.”
The Cardinals follow up this victory with a race against Bethesda Chevy-Chase this upcoming Saturday March 23rd in Georgetown on the Potomac River.

Girls Lax Wins Season Opener over an old nemesis, 11-6

Sophomore Kelly Mathews had a 4-goal day in Charlottesville in the season opener.

The Bishop Ireton girls’ lacrosse team traveled down to Charlottesville, VA, on Tuesday, March 12, to face off against St. Anne’s-Belfield (STAB) and came away with an 11-6 victory.  Before last year’s pair of wins on Fannon Field, Ireton had never solved the STAB girls’ lacrosse puzzle.  STAB led this contest 4-2 at halftime, but BI roared back in the second half to claim the victory.

Sophomores Kelly Matthews and Isabel Obregon led the offense with four goals for Matthews, and three goals and one assist for Obregon.   Junior goalie Olivia Cole anchored the defense with eight saves on 18 shots on goal. Cole also called for two illegal stick checks after apparent STAB goals and both goals were indeed overturned after the requisite inspections by the referees.

Freshman Kelly Larkin scored her first two career goals as a Cardinal, sophomore Charlotte Sofield contributed one goal and three assists, senior Brenna Heaney scored one goal and had one assist, and junior Kendall Cunningham had one assist.

The Cardinals’ home opener at Fannon Field is Saturday, March 16, at 1:00 p.m. against Collegiate School of Richmond. The team faces tough home games against two nationally-ranked opponents next week. They play Georgetown Visitation on Monday, March 18, at 4:00 p.m. and St. Stephens-St. Agnes on Wednesday, March 20, at 4:00 p.m.  Next month, the team travels to Long Island during spring break to play nationally-ranked Sacred Heart on April 2 and Long Beach on April 3. The Lady Cardinals finish spring break with two games at Fannon Field—both on Friday, April 5, against nationally ranked teams-defending state champions: Loyola Academy of Illinois and Milton High School of Georgia.

Tangora gets chilly win in 13-3 decision over Stonewall Jackson

The Bishop Ireton Cardinals (3-1, 0-0) refused to relinquish the lead after grabbing it early against the Stonewall Jackson Raiders, recording a 13-3 victory on Thursday at Frank Mann Field.

Nine runs in the first three innings allowed the Cards to put the game away early.  An RBI triple by Andrew Selby, an RBI single by Ben Judd, and an RBI single by Nick Tangora in the first inning fueled the redbirds’ offense early.

Selby boosted his batting average thanks to a perfect 2-2 day at the plate to pace Bishop Ireton.  Tangora recorded the win to even his record at 1-1. He allowed two runs over four innings, struck out four, walked two, and surrendered four hits.

The Cardinals open the 2013 WCAC campaign Saturday when they travel to Riverdale Park to play DeMatha at noon.  JV will host the Stags at Frank Mann Field beginning at 12pm as well. There is no charge for admission to either game. 5-run 5th dooms Cardinals to first setback of the season, 5-3

special by Joe Selby.

The Bishop Ireton Cardinals (1-1, 0-0) built an early edge on Monday, but the T.C. Williams Titans roared back to steal a 5-3 victory at Simpson Field Monday in Alexandria.

After Ireton bolted to a 3-0 lead early in the game, the Titans took the lead a five-run fifth inning, aided by three-run home run by Brandon Beck.  Ireton’s Andrew Selby went a perfect 2-2 at the plate for the Bishop Ireton Cardinals. He singled in the first and third innings.  The Cardinals’ starter, Ben Judd handled the T.C. Williams Titans’ lineup early, racking up five strikeouts. The righthander gave up just four hits over four shutout innings.

Tyler Ratliff got the win in relief for the Titans, pitching three scoreless innings.   T.C. Williams was sparked by Beck and Alec Grosser, who teamed up for four hits and five RBIs.  It was Grosser’s single when Ireton reliever Nick Tangora was one strike from escaping the disasterous 5th unscathed, that plated the Titans’ first two runs; Beck delivered the knockout homer two hitters later.

The top of the first saw the Cardinals take an early lead, 3-0. Catcher Corey Phillips started the rally for the visiting redbirds with a single.  A stolen base then moved Phillips from first to second.  Bishop Ireton  added more runs when Joe Bagnerise scored on a wild pitch and Selby followed on yet another errant pitch.

The Titans never surrendered the lead after the fifth inning. Ireton got the tying run to the plate in their final at bat, only to see the home team turn a game-ending double play.

Rain has washed out the Tuesday matchup with the Potomac School, now set for Wednesday in McLean.

Tennis Looks to build on solid foundation in 2013 campaign

The boys’ tennis team comes back in full swing this season after graduating  only two seniors. 20 boys took to the courts for the Cardinals this spring under the direction of veteran Coach Katie Sloper-Johnson, a 2001 alumnus of Bishop Ireton, and Tom Noone, entering his second school year with the team.

The 2013 squad has their #1 singles player senior Dax McDonnell and their #2 sophomore Robin Beard returning to their spots to kick off the season.   Sloper-Johnson expects sophomores Garrett Beauch and Matthew Pham, to be much on a cusp of a breakout season in early training at the Cardinals new home at Hollin Hills Tennis Club. Those four will likely see action not only as one of the six singles players, but also on one of the three doubles teams that will comprise the varsity lineup.

With a tough conference ahead of them, they know success won’t come without practice and determination.  That schedule kicks off this week as the Cardinals open the 2013 season with Bishop McNamara Wednesday.  Ireton will play their home schedule at Hollin Hills Swim & Tennis Club for the first time. The Club is on 1636 Paul Springs Road, just off Fort Hunt Road in Alexandria.

Ireton looks for another strong season on the diamond

Veteran Ireton skipper, Mike Gallagher, in his sixth season, looks to strong pitching and good defense as the key to success in the 2013 campaign.

The Bishop Ireton Cardinals return 9 players from the 2012 Virginia state semi-final team including 8 seniors and 7 starters.  This year’s team will look to build on last year’s success with hope to compete for the WCAC Championship and win the VISAA State Tournament, according to head coach Mike Gallagher.

Ireton will be anchored by senior Corey Phillips (Marymount University) and Senior Andrew Selby (George Washington University).  Both players are 4-year varsity starters and both WCAC and VISAA state All-League selections a year ago.  Selby will command centerfield while Phillips “quarterback” the Cardinals behind the plate.

The ace of the pitching rotation this year should be senior Cody Hagenston (Randolph Macon College).  Hagenston threw 40 innings last year for the Cardinals and Gallagher expects the lanky right hander will be the work horse again.  His efforts will be complemented by seniors Nick Tangora, Ben Judd and John Todd (Guilford College).  Also serving vital roles for the redbirds will be senior RF Scott Schwartz (Guilford College), junior shortstop Joe Bagnerise and freshman second baseman Robert Corallo.

In addition to the rigorous WCAC schedule, the Cardinals will compete in the 44th Annual HIT Tournament in Charleston, SC over Spring Break and play VISAA rivals St. Stephens St. Agnes, Potomac School, and Flint Hill.  They will also take on public school opponent, Stonewall Jackson, as well as Alexandria city rival, the TC Williams Titans.

Softball Anxious to move up in 2013 WCAC, VISAA campaign

Junior Susie Rhodes (18) will play a big role at the plate as well as pitching for the 2013 Cardinals.

The 2013 Bishop Ireton Softball team opens the season this week planning to build on last year’s 12-12 record.  A solid group of experienced players returns from last year recharged with fresh talent.

Returning players Emily Quinn and Kathleen Walsh will be joined by the powerful bat of Sarah Howell along with Eileen Louison to lead the team as seniors.  Quinn is expected to return to first base while Walsh will again be patrolling Ireton’s outfield.  A strong crop of experienced juniors will provide power at the plate and sure handedness in the field.

All WCAC pitcher Susy Rhodes inherits the pitching circle, bringing both heat and movement  with her pitches.  Megan Sullivan’s steady bat will provide needed punch and Maria Manzek’s speed and strong arm provide solid defense to the outfield.  All-state catcher/shortstop Heather Pearson rounds out this strong group of juniors.

Katie Reilly returns to the varsity squad again this year with transfer student Emma Petersen and Maggi  Coyle who has moved up from last year’s JV squad.  The three represent  Ireton’s sophomore class and expect to make a solid contribution to the team.   Three freshman: Molly Jeffers, Angela Kammen and Clara Boggs earned spots on the varsity roster, adding balance and depth.

Head coach Terri Pearson returns for her third year and will be assisted this season by Mike Hutton.  A great addition to the squad is senior manager Claire Nagle who offers great support to both players and the coaching staff.

After scrimmages this week against Lee and Wakefield High Schools the Cardinals open the season at home  against St. John’s on Tuesday, March 12 th at Luckett Field.  First pitch is at 4PM.  Other schedule highlights include a doubleheader in Richmond on March 23rd as part of the Richmond North-South Challenge  weekend and a five-day tournament over spring break in Myrtle Beach.

“We have a wonderful group of talented girls this year for our challenging 25-game schedule.” said Coach Pearson.  “We’ll not only be playing in the competitive WCAC, but also have a number of games against other Virginia independent schools and teams from up and down the east coast.”
