Tennis Looks to build on solid foundation in 2013 campaign

The boys’ tennis team comes back in full swing this season after graduating  only two seniors. 20 boys took to the courts for the Cardinals this spring under the direction of veteran Coach Katie Sloper-Johnson, a 2001 alumnus of Bishop Ireton, and Tom Noone, entering his second school year with the team.

The 2013 squad has their #1 singles player senior Dax McDonnell and their #2 sophomore Robin Beard returning to their spots to kick off the season.   Sloper-Johnson expects sophomores Garrett Beauch and Matthew Pham, to be much on a cusp of a breakout season in early training at the Cardinals new home at Hollin Hills Tennis Club. Those four will likely see action not only as one of the six singles players, but also on one of the three doubles teams that will comprise the varsity lineup.

With a tough conference ahead of them, they know success won’t come without practice and determination.  That schedule kicks off this week as the Cardinals open the 2013 season with Bishop McNamara Wednesday.  Ireton will play their home schedule at Hollin Hills Swim & Tennis Club for the first time. The Club is on 1636 Paul Springs Road, just off Fort Hunt Road in Alexandria.
