Senior Julia O'Brien scored a season high 17 in her final game as a Cardinal versus Paul VI.
Bishop Ireton’s girls’ basketball team, seeded 9th, claimed it’s 11th and final win of the 2012-13 campaign with a 31-29 win over 8th seeded Episcopal Tuesday at Episcopal.
It was a low scoring affair, with each club able to garner only 7 field goals for the game and the Cardinals managed only 15 of 33 from the charity stripe. Episcopal was slightly better from the free throw line, making 15 of 26. The difference was a pair of three-point goals by the game’s leading scorer, sophomore Alex Stipano.
Her 15 points marked her as the game’s only player in double figures, though Episcopal’s Somer Glubiak hauled down 11 rebounds and scored 8 points in the defeat.
Bishop Ireton broke out to a 12-6 lead after one period, and the Maroon closed the gap in a low scoring second period to trail only 16-12 at intermission. They continued to close the margin to 25-22 after three periods of play and chipped another point off the Ireton lead in the final stanza, but didn’t have enough to overcome Ireton in the state’s first round contest.
Episcopal, of the ISL, ended their season at a respectable 17-8, 9-3 in league play. Ireton improved to 11-19, 2-16 in advancing to the state quarterfinal date with top seeded Paul VI on Wednesday.
Ireton’s fate appeared to be determined early in Fairfax, as the Panthers would not look past the Cardinals despite a pair of lopsided regular season wins.
Paul VI jumped to an early 22-9 lead, extended the advantage to 47-21 at intermission and cruised to a 70-43 final with 13 different players scoring for the top-ranked, 6-time defending state champions.
Julia O’Brien was the game’s high scorer with a season-high 17 points for the Cardinals. First team, WCAC all conference player, Marlena Tremba led PVI with 16, fellow all conference performer, Ariana Freeman added 15 for the Panthers. Ireton’s CeCe Leone had 6, while Ileana Gutierrez, Alex Stipano, and Camille Weber all contributed 5.
Ireton ended the season with a 10-20, 2-16 in arguably America’s toughest girls’ basketball conference. Three seniors, Weber, O’Brien, and Taylor Gallaghan played their final game for the Cardinals, while classmate Mara Celis-Copelotti had seen her season end days earlier.
