Girls Lacrosse Optimistic as Preseason unfolds

The Cardinals also return senior goalkeeper Michaela Mulokey and are looking for big contributions from freshmen Susan Morad and Maggie Lohrer who will challenge for playing time.

Ireton also sports a strong midfield with the return of two All-WCAC players in sophomores Kelly Mathews and Charlotte Sofield as well as returning sophomore Christine Macey. Making the move from JV last year, junior Annie Barletta and sophomore Cori Vasques will be called upon to keep the high-pressure Cardinals’ legs fresh all game. Ireton Wounded Warrior continues hockey affection at Chicago’s Soldier Field event

2001 Ireton grad Mark Little poses in Chicago during a Wounded Warrior hockey game

A special  from Ashleigh Bryant

US Army veteran and 2000 Bishop Ireton graduate Mark Little led his team, the USA Warriors, onto the ice at Soldier Field in Chicago this weekend as part of the 2013 Hockey City Classic.

The Warriors skated alongside the Chicago Blackhawks at a Saturday morning scrimmage where Little schooled Hawks’ captain Jonathan Toews on dropping the gloves. Saturday night, Little led the Warriors as they faced off against a team of Chicago Blackhawks alumni, local celebrities and politicians on the outdoor rink at Soldier Field.

Little, who tended goal for Ireton’s newly formed hockey team in 1998, was wounded as an Army lieutenant on three separate occasions during his 2007 Iraq deployment, ultimately losing both legs below the knee to an improvised explosive device (IED) blast. He completed rehabilitation at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, and received two Purple Heart medals, the Bronze Star, and the Army Commendation Medal for his actions in Iraq.

Ireton students, staff and fans honored Little at “Mark Little Appreciation Day” at a BI varsity boys basketball game in December 2008, during his first visit back to the school after he was injured.

Nine Cardinals on NVSHL all conference academic team

Cardinals placed 9 players on NVSHL's all academic team for the 2012-13 season.

The Northern Virginia Scholastic Hockey League (NVSHL) announced last week it recognized nine Bishop Ireton hockey players for academic honors.

The NVSHL is a non-profit organization made up of more than 40 northern Virginia high schools, both public and private, which exists to promote ice hockey, provide a safe environment, and allow students to learn sportsmanship and teamwork. Student-Athletes had to be in good standing with the NVSHL and have a recalculated GPA of 3.5 or better in EACH of the first two grading periods of the 2012-2013 school year (not combined or overall).   Team managers had to obtain the athletes’ report cards and recalculate the GPA according to NVSHL standards. Grades were weighted consistently and not according to individual schools or county school systems formulas.

“We are very proud of our hockey players.” said athletic director, Bill Simmons.  “This is what we are looking for at Bishop Ireton.  Well rounded student-athletes, young people that excel on the ice and in the classroom.  As you can see by the list, that is embraced by our head coach, Tony DiCarlo and by our athletes. It was great to have senior Nick Tangora represent us again this year in the League’s all star game, but we are equally proud that we are at the top of the league academically with nine players on the all academic list.”

All recipients of the award receive a certificate and are recognized on the NVSHL website.  There were 33 teams (45 total schools) with at least 1 recipient and only 5 schools had more recipients than BI Forty-five northern Virginia schools are recognized. Bishop Ireton student athletes were:

freshmen: Luke Burton, Johnathan Chin, Tim Newell

sophomore: Wendell Beane

juniors: Patrick Coyne, Duke Roach, Phillip Thomas

seniors: Michaela Mulokey and Nick Tangora

Girls upend Episcopal, dumped by PVI in state playoff action

Senior Julia O'Brien scored a season high 17 in her final game as a Cardinal versus Paul VI.

Bishop Ireton’s girls’ basketball team, seeded 9th, claimed it’s 11th and final win of the 2012-13 campaign with a 31-29 win over 8th seeded Episcopal Tuesday at Episcopal.

It was a low scoring affair, with each club able to garner only 7 field goals for the game and the Cardinals managed only 15 of 33 from the charity stripe.  Episcopal was slightly better from the free throw line, making 15 of 26.  The difference was a pair of three-point goals by the game’s leading scorer, sophomore Alex Stipano.

Her 15 points marked her as the game’s only player in double figures, though Episcopal’s Somer Glubiak hauled down 11 rebounds and scored 8 points in the defeat.

Bishop Ireton broke out to a 12-6 lead after one period, and the Maroon closed the gap in a low scoring second period to trail only 16-12 at intermission. They continued to close the margin to 25-22 after three periods of play and chipped another point off the Ireton lead in the final stanza, but didn’t have enough to overcome Ireton in the state’s first round contest.

Episcopal, of the ISL, ended their season at a respectable 17-8, 9-3 in league play. Ireton improved to 11-19, 2-16 in advancing to the state quarterfinal date with top seeded Paul VI on Wednesday.

Ireton’s fate appeared to be determined early in Fairfax, as the Panthers would not look past the Cardinals despite a pair of lopsided regular season wins.

Paul VI jumped to an early 22-9 lead, extended the advantage to 47-21 at intermission and cruised to a 70-43 final with 13 different players scoring for the top-ranked, 6-time defending state champions.

Julia O’Brien was the game’s high scorer with a season-high 17 points for the Cardinals. First team, WCAC all conference player, Marlena Tremba led PVI with 16, fellow all conference performer, Ariana Freeman added 15 for the Panthers.  Ireton’s CeCe Leone had 6, while Ileana Gutierrez, Alex Stipano, and Camille Weber all contributed 5.

Ireton ended the season with a 10-20, 2-16 in arguably America’s toughest girls’ basketball conference.  Three seniors, Weber, O’Brien, and Taylor Gallaghan played their final game for the Cardinals, while classmate Mara Celis-Copelotti had seen her season end days earlier.

Pair of Lopsided Games Bring Boys’ hoops season to close

Senior Louie Khouri, (10), the team captain led Ireton in scoring in his final appearance before the home crowd in Fr Godley Gym.

Coming off a season-defining win over Gonzaga and an emotional setback to St Johns in the WCAC, the Cardinals returned home to start the Virginia Independent School’s division I state playoffs hosting the Potomac School. While the weather was miserable, the Cardinals’ play wasn’t.

Bishop Ireton bounced back with a strong first quarter of play to take a 13-3 lead and never looked back enroute to a 59-42 win over the Panthers. It was far different in the teams’ first meeting, where Potomac staked themselves to an 11-point first half advantage and forced Ireton to make a last minute bucket to survive with a 2-point win 49-47.  There was none of that drama this time.

Louie Khouri, in his final appearance in Godley Gym, was in double figures by halftime, his 12 points leading Ireton to a 35-13 bulge.  The second half saw the Panthers trim the advantage and threaten to cut the deficit to single digits, always to see the Cardinals respond. Coach Neil Berkman made extensive use of his bench enroute to the win.

The next day, however, the trip to 4th-seeded Benedictine resulted in a far different outcome for the Cardinals. “Well, there  were a number of things involved” said Berkman, “and basically they would be excuses.  Benedictine is a very good basketball team and they shot the lights out of the gym.  We didn’t play our best and nothing we did had much effect on stopping them or getting us going.”

After a 15-13 first quarter, the Cadets blew the game open with a 9-2 run to open the second and quickly jumped to a 24-15 lead. Ireton would cut it to 6 in the second quarter but Benedictine responded and the route was on early in the third quarter at 54-32 going to the final stanza. Benedictine went on to a huge 68-40 win to close the Cardinals’ 2012-13 campaign at 18-15, team’s most wins since Paul DiStefano’s 1986 squad went 19-9.  Benedictine advanced the state semifinal game with #10 Liberty Christian, an upset winner over #2 Paul VI in Fairfax.
