AHC hands Ireton its first WCAC lax setback, Cards bounce back over Bullis

Senior Sarah Rupp dominated the draws at The Bullis School Saturday night, paving the way to an 11-6 win.

The Cardinals girls’ lacrosse team has dominated most of the WCAC for the past 4 years, with the exception of  7-time champion Good Counsel and guaranteed battles with Holy Cross.

Last season the Cardinals nipped the Tartans in Kensington during the regular season, only to fall to those same Tartans at home in the semifinals of the WCAC playoffs.  That trend continued on a soggy Friday afternoon as the visitors outlasted Bishop Ireton 13-12 in a near constant downpour.

BI started off strong in the first half with Maddie Zeigler scoring the first two goals off the free position.   After the initial score by Holy Cross,Ireton came back with another two points, the first by Maddie Zeigler with an assist by Aubrey Gartlan, the second resulting from a hard fought team goal.  Holy Cross then rallied to score six goals within the next ten minutes of play.  Maddie Zeigler would add two more to the board and Eva Irwin one as the first half ended with a 7-7 score.

The second half started with an initial score by Sarah Rupp but went downhill for the Cardinals as Holy Cross scored another three in quick succession to take the lead 10-8.  The Cardinals would never regain the lead but went on to match Holy Cross goal for goal with Sarah Rupp scoring again and Maddie Zeigler, Ellie Marrin and Kathryn Gasper each adding one to the board.

Ireton’s first loss of the season in conference play dropped them into a tie with Holy Cross, who owns the tiebreaker with the win on Friday.  The WCAC challenge now is the undefeated Falcons on Tuesday who earlier thumped Holy Cross 23-9.

The week ended on the happier note for Cardinal faithful with an Ireton victory over the Bullis School on Saturday night.  The Cardinals brought to the Bullis stadium all the energy they showed in the Holy Cross game to beat the Bulldogs 11-6.  A pumped up defense held Bullis to four goals in the first half.  Maddie Zeigler was credited with three goals and two assists, Catie Isham two goals and Sarah Rupp, Ellie Marrin (with one assist) , Aubrey Gartlan and Eva Irwin one goal each.

A strong, vigilant defense by Eva Irwin, Katherine Simmons, Oliva O’Sullivan, and Gabby Barowsky and some powerful saves by goalie Maggie Covert kept the Bullis offense in check, holding the Bulldogs to four goals to close the first half with a score of 9-4.  In the second half the defense on each side limited the action on the board to two goals each side.  Ellie Marrin and Aubrey Gartlan scored Ireton’s two remaining shots with a final score of 11-6.

Ireton heads into the final two contests of the WCAC calendar, with Good Counsel Tuesday and senior day at Fannon Field when Bishop McNamara calls on the Cardinals. In the meantime, Friday’s home game with Sidwell Friends has been cancelled. The Cardinals will travel to the Potomac School on Saturday, April 16th before concluding the home season with the Mustangs the following Tuesday.

Collegiate School, a Richmond powerhouse, has been added to the schedule to replacing Sidwell Friends, the Cardinals will travel to Richmond on April 28th.   Road tilts at Holy Child and Stone Ridge round out the balance of the rapidly passing 2011 regular season.

WCAC tournament action begins with quarterfinal action on Tuesday, May 3rd and ends with the championship on May 9th at the University of Maryland’s Ludwig Field.

Ireton pounded out 19 hits in opening game of Madison softball tourney

The Cardinals scored 9 runs in the first inning and cruised to their 7th win of the season, defeating West Springfield High School 17-6 in five innings on Saturday afternoon.

Ireton pounded out 19 hits with 6 batters posting a multi-hit game.  Micki Crouch, Debbie Ward and Susie Rhodes led the attack with 3 hits apiece.  In the first inning Ireton sent 15 batters to the plate and scored 9 runs with a 2 out mega rally.  After a quick bottom of the first inning, the Cardinal bats came alive again with Sarah Howell and Katie Kiesner leading off with back to back singles leading to 3  more runs and pushing the lead up to 12-0 after 2.

Micki Crouch pitched superbly through 3 innings without yielding a single hit on her way to striking out 5 for the day.  Freshman Susie Rhodes took over for Crouch, pitching the 3rd and 4th innings recording 3 strike outs and giving her defense the opportunity to play.

Ireton put up 2 more runs in the 4th inning which included a single by Jess Taylor.  They scored another 3 runs in the 5th on  a double by Meghan Pearson.  Crouch returned for the 5th inning sitting down the side in order  to complete the 17-6 victory.

O’Connell uses 6-run 5th inning to upend Cardinals

Cardinals battled Bishop O'Connell for 4 scoreless innings before a three-run home run ignited a big rally in Alexandria Wednesday.

Bishop O’Connell softball demonstrated why they are one of the best teams in the country on Wednesday as they beat the Cardinals 12-2 in a full 7 inning game.  With the loss, Ireton drops to 6-3 on the year.

The game was a pitcher’s duel through four full innings with Micki Crouch shutting down the potent O’Connell offense. Junior Debbie Ward played a solid left field, keeping the score close.    In the 5th inning, O’Connell jumped out in front with a 3 run homer  and then followed with 3 more before the inning ended.  They attacked again in the sixth, scoring another  4 runs.

The Cardinals had 6 hits in the game including a Micki Crouch lead off double and singles by Carolyn Boddie and Debbie Ward.  The Ireton runs came in the 6th inning with consecutive singles by Heather Pearson and Susie Rhodes who were then driven home by a Meghan Pearson double to right center field.

“We played well against an excellent team today,  Our defense played well against a hard hitting offense,” commented Ireton Coach Terri Pearson.  “If we can sustain this level of play we are going to be a formidable opponent for anyone.”

The Cardinals return to Luckett field on Friday afternoon against St. Mary’s Ryken.

Cardinals capture 4th straight in 14-3 win over Good Counsel

Strong defense and timely hitting has capitalized on junior Micki Crouch's reliable pitching to send the Cardinals to a 5-2 record in the WCAC.

Bishop Ireton softball (6-2, 5-2)extended their current winning streak to 4 games with a 14-3 six inning victory over Good Counsel Monday at Luckett field.  Micki Crouch struck out 14 batters and Junior Debbie Ward hit a grand slam to put the game away early.

The Cardinals exploded for 5 runs in the first inning which started with a hard hit triple by leadoff batter Micki Crouch,  a double by Susie Rhodes, a Katie Kiesner single and a pair of Good Counsel fielding errors.  Then they stretched the lead to 10-0 in the third inning when Ward’s massive shot to center field scored Emily Quinn, Heather Pearson and Megan Sullivan in the first grand slam of the season for the Ireton Softballers.  The next inning and with two outs and 3 runners on, Heather Pearson cleared the bases with a triple to make it a 14-0 game.

Micki Crouch was sharp throughout the game allowing a single hit.  Freshman Susie Rhodes pitched the 5th inning and recorded a strikeout.

On Wednesday, the Cardinals face Bishop O’Connell , ranked 7th in the country by MaxPrepSports, in a rematch of the season opener.

Cardinals drop a thriller and laugher in pair of road setbacks on the diamond

The Cardinals have played well in recent years on Panther Field, falling this time in extra innings

Bishop Ireton’s young ballclub once again played WCAC heavyweight PVI tough Friday night, falling 2-1 in 8 innings in Fairfax before getting drilled Monday night in a game Coach Mike Gallagher described as “our poorest effort of the season” 11-0 at Flint Hill in 5 innings.

The Cardinals play the Panthers close and Friday was no exception.  Sophomore Cody Hagenston battled Robbie Kidd for 6 1/3 innings on Panther Field, nursing a 1-0 lead before PVI knotted the score in the bottom of the 7th to send the game to extra frames.

Ireton threatened in the top of the second inning when they garnered a single and error on Kidd, but the Cal State Fullerton-bound hurler retired the next three Cardinals to work out of the jam. PVI had the makings of a rally in the bottom half of the inning, but sloppy baserunning kept the Panthers off the scoreboard.

The red and gold did plate the game’s first tally in the third when Andrew Selby singled, stole second and advanced to third on catcher Corey Phillips’ base hit.  A passed ball then scored Selby and the redbirds clung to the slim lead into the game’s final inning.

PVI’s Lucas Martinez, who was 4 for 4 on the evening, drove home the tying run in Colin May with his third hit.  The Panthers then touched the Cardinals Jake Gutmann, in relief, for a double in the bottom of the 8th.   A wild pitch sent sent the winning run to third with no outs and Ireton’s Gallagher ordered a pair of intentional passes to set up a double play opportunity.

Enter Martinez, who proved to be a one man wrecking crew on the evening.  His two-hopper to second was a tough play and the throw home sent Phillips up the third base line where the Panthers slid hard into the plate with the winning run.

“Bishop Ireton seems to always play us as tough as anyone in the WCAC.” commented PVI’s head coach, Billy Emerson. “Ever since they ended our 22-game conference win streak two years ago, we seem to be in a dogfight every time.  You know they will play you hard and they are well coached.”

The emotional toll of the Friday night setback may have had an impact, with the Cambridge Road crew looking at major league style schedule of 4 games in 5 days, but the Monday contest was a disaster for the redbirds, falling 11-0 in mercy-rule 5 inning affair.  “I don’t know what happened,” said Gallagher in postgame comments. “I guess it’s good we go right back out there on Tuesday and get this one behind us. ”

Bishop Ireton hosts St Mary’s Ryken on Tuesday, St Johns on Thursday, Sidwell Friends in a nonconference tilt Friday before ending the 4-game homestand Saturday with Bishop McNamara at Four Mile Run Park’s Frank Mann Field.

Cardinal girls’ lacrosse rolling with 5 straight wins

Junior Maddy Zeigler and the Cardinals have blitzed 5 straight opponents by lopsided scores as Ireton heads into a weekend of tough contests.

Friday evening the Cardinals took to the cold and windy field at home to host St. John’s  College High School.  St. John’s was overwhelmed by the more experienced Cardinals, who bolted to a large first half lead and coasted to final of 15-2.  Coach Sofield made good use of the opportunity to mix the game up a bit for the players with new lineups and offensive and defensive looks.

Maddie Zeigler left the field having scored three goals and two assists.  Ellie Marrin and Kathryn Gasper each scored twice.  Sarah Rupp (with two assists), Megan Fyffe, Aubrey Gartlan, Gabby Barowski, Katie Nicochea, Katherine Simmons, Ciana Puglise and goalie Maggie Covert playing attack, each earned an additional goal to close out the evening.

On Saturday, there was no rest for the Cardinals as they demonstrated their skills to a crowd attending the BI-hosted LAX Day.   The ladies from Cape Henry Collegiate made the trek from Virginia Beach for the 7th annual gala and started fast stunning the Alexandrians by grabbing a quick 3-0 lead on a cold and wet Saturday afternoon.

Not to be discouraged, the Cardinals turned things around and went on to score seven goals within the next five minutes.  Cape Henry tried to catch their collective breaths and came back to score an additional three points but it was a little too late as the  Cardinals would match them point for point, bringing the first half of the game to a close with a score of 11-6.

The abbreviated second half of the game proved to a steep hill to climb for Cape Henry who was held to only two additional goals while the Cardinals succeeded in adding another seven points to the board.  Mother Nature won out in the end, using high winds, pouring rain and a clap of thunder to order the opponents off the field with only 3:10 on the clock.

The Cardinals closed out their day with their fourth consecutive victory and a score of 18-6.  Maddie Zeigler lead the way with six goals and one assist.  Sarah Rupp was not far behind with five goals and 1 assist.  Ellie Marrin brought in three goals, Aubrey Gartlan two goals and Megan Fyffe and Kathryn Gasper scored the remaining two goals.  In addition, Ciana Puglise, Megan Fyffe, Aubrey Gartlan and Catie Isham each were credited with an assist.

Paul VI Catholic was the third visitor to Fannon Field during the current 4-game homestand and faired little better as Bishop Ireton rolled to their fifth straight WCAC win 15-3.  The Cardinals started fast against their diocesan rivals and built a 12-0 lead late in the first half of play before Coach Sofield began to liberally substitute and experiment with his line up.

The road ahead will be considerably more difficult as the WCAC’s co-leaders host the Tartans of Holy Cross, with only one loss in league play (to Good Counsel) on Friday.   The Kensington, Maryland, school knocked the Cardinals out of the WCAC playoffs last spring before falling to Good Counsel in the championship.  Saturday Ireton hits the road for a rare night game at the Bullis School, a rescheduled affair now set for 7pm in Potomac, Maryland.

Tuesday brings a bus ride to Olney, Maryland, where the Cardinals will again take measure of their progress when they challenge co-leader, Good Counsel, the WCAC’s 7-time defending champions, riding an 80+ consecutive game regular season conference win streak.  The Falcons have a Saturday nonconference date of their own, perhaps the game of the season in the Washington area, when they visit another metro powerhouse St Stephens/St Agnes in Alexandria.

Senior Whitney Cook, a 4-year varsity cheerleader, is Bishop Ireton's first UCA honored cheerleader

Senior Whitney Cook has been selected as a Universal Cheerleading Association Cheerleader.  This is one of the most prominent cheerleading Associations is the United States.   High school cheerleaders from all over the US attend a UCA camp during the summer to build their skills.

Bishop Ireton has attended the UCA Summer Camp for 10 years.   For the 1st time in Bishop Ireton history, we will have one of our alumni on the staff as an instructor.  It takes more than just talent to become a member of the UCA Staff.  Along with the right cheerleading skills, UCA looks for young men and women possessing character and enthusiasm, as well as teamwork and leadership skills.  Of the more than 1,000 that apply, only the very best are chosen!

Track teams shine on rainy day at Wolverine Invitational

Shannon Gordon is one of the Cardinals top point producers

The weather took center stage at Saturday’s  Wolverine invitational  at North Stafford High School with impossible winds, cold, and even rain.   The weather did not stop the girls’ team of veterans and newcomers from performing and scoring medals in 14 of the events inwhich they were entered.   Medals were given out to the top 8 performances in individual events and the top 4 in the relays.

New head coach Mike Resnick has put together a meet schedule that combines invitational’s and tri-meets.   These meets give our school a chance to showcase the Cardinals’ very talented varsity team and newcomers.

At yesterdays invitational the girls’ team was led by Catholic state champs Shannon Gordon and Nicole Bond.  Shannon won medals in 4 events (100 m hurdles, High Jump,
300 m hurdles, and the 4×400 meter relay).  In similar fashion Nicole won medals in the 100m,200m, and the 4×400 m relay.  The team gained the talents of a  junior transfer from North Carolina who first turned heads with her soccer season in the fall.  Junior Anna Wissler won a medal in the 800, 4×400, and 4×800.  Other medals were won by seniors Marin Nolan in the 4×400 and 4×800, and Madeline Thomas in the 4×800.

Joanna Faletti also won a medal in the 4×800, after turning in one of the most  inspiring performances by a BI track athlete in some time.  It was not obvious that Joanna had practiced through a week of back pain when she took the baton in fourth place on her leg of the 4×800 and brought the team all the way back to second place finish in the competitive event.

BJ Townley turned in the days best performance earning medals in the 110 high hurdles, 300 hurdles, and the 4×400 meter relay with the boys’ team.  Other individual medals were won by Murphy Costigan in the 1600, and 4×800 meter relay.  Mike Anderson  won a medal in the 800 and the 4×400.   He was joined in the 4×400 by Sam Ferrara, BJ, and Khyree Robinson.  Khyree is one the freshman that has already  earned a spot on a varsity relay team.

Next week the teams will compete in the Mountain View invitational.  Hopefully the weather will be more cooperative.  If not,  the early results of the season suggest BI track team will still show up and compete.  They always do.

Softball overcomes weather, Norfolk Academy in weekend action

Cardinals posted a key in-state win over Norfolk Academy Saturday at St Stephens/St Agnes School when wet grounds fouled a three-game weekend series

BI varsity softball improved their record to 5-2 Saturday morning with a 7-1 win against Norfolk Academy.  Micki Crouch struck out eight while the defense played error free ball behind her.  Freshman Heather Pearson went 3 for 3 at the plate and drove in 4 runs.

The nightcap of the weather-altered weekend was scrubbed as afternoon showers rained out the original Friday afternoon date with Norfolk Academy, then the St Catherine’s contest rescheduled for 4pm. The adjusted schedule  bumped the Highlands School game for Saturday because City fields were not available and, like St Catherine’s, will not be rescheduled.

As has become characteristic, the Cardinals gave up a run in the first inning.  They rallied back in the bottom of the first with three hits, but came up empty handed after loading the bases.  The offense came back strong again in the second when Sarah Howell, Meghan Sullivan and Micki Crouch had consecutive hits and were then driven in by a Heather Pearson sacrifice fly and a Debbie Ward single making the score 3-1.

Though Norfolk Academy scattered seven hits, fine defensive work and timely strike outs kept them off the scoreboard.  In the 4th inning and with a runner at first, junior second baseman Katie Keisner snagged a sharply hit line drive and then threw quickly to first, doubling up the base runner.  A fine catch by right fielder Kathleen Walsh in the 6th inning stopped a Norfolk Academy rally before it could get started.

The Cardinals tacked on 3 more runs in the 4th inning as they batted around.  Another run was added in the 5th as timely hitting and aggressive base running pressured the Norfolk Academy defense.

“Going into the game I was a little worried about how well the girls would do with an early Saturday morning game, but they came ready to play,” said coach Terri Pearson on the win.  “Importantly, this is two error free games in row for us.”

The Cardinals have 4 games scheduled this week including home games against Good Counsel, Bishop O’Connell and Saint Mary’s Ryken.
