Ireton pounded out 19 hits in opening game of Madison softball tourney
The Cardinals scored 9 runs in the first inning and cruised to their 7th win of the season, defeating West Springfield High School 17-6 in five innings on Saturday afternoon.
Ireton pounded out 19 hits with 6 batters posting a multi-hit game. Micki Crouch, Debbie Ward and Susie Rhodes led the attack with 3 hits apiece. In the first inning Ireton sent 15 batters to the plate and scored 9 runs with a 2 out mega rally. After a quick bottom of the first inning, the Cardinal bats came alive again with Sarah Howell and Katie Kiesner leading off with back to back singles leading to 3 more runs and pushing the lead up to 12-0 after 2.
Micki Crouch pitched superbly through 3 innings without yielding a single hit on her way to striking out 5 for the day. Freshman Susie Rhodes took over for Crouch, pitching the 3rd and 4th innings recording 3 strike outs and giving her defense the opportunity to play.
Ireton put up 2 more runs in the 4th inning which included a single by Jess Taylor. They scored another 3 runs in the 5th on a double by Meghan Pearson. Crouch returned for the 5th inning sitting down the side in order to complete the 17-6 victory.
“Those 19 hits in 5 innings really shows that the batting practice is really starting to pay off,” commented coach Terri Pearson.
The Cardinals take to the road on Monday and return to conference play to face the Cadets of St. Johns.
