Senior Sarah Rupp dominated the draws at The Bullis School Saturday night, paving the way to an 11-6 win.
The Cardinals girls’ lacrosse team has dominated most of the WCAC for the past 4 years, with the exception of 7-time champion Good Counsel and guaranteed battles with Holy Cross.
Last season the Cardinals nipped the Tartans in Kensington during the regular season, only to fall to those same Tartans at home in the semifinals of the WCAC playoffs. That trend continued on a soggy Friday afternoon as the visitors outlasted Bishop Ireton 13-12 in a near constant downpour.
BI started off strong in the first half with Maddie Zeigler scoring the first two goals off the free position. After the initial score by Holy Cross,Ireton came back with another two points, the first by Maddie Zeigler with an assist by Aubrey Gartlan, the second resulting from a hard fought team goal. Holy Cross then rallied to score six goals within the next ten minutes of play. Maddie Zeigler would add two more to the board and Eva Irwin one as the first half ended with a 7-7 score.
The second half started with an initial score by Sarah Rupp but went downhill for the Cardinals as Holy Cross scored another three in quick succession to take the lead 10-8. The Cardinals would never regain the lead but went on to match Holy Cross goal for goal with Sarah Rupp scoring again and Maddie Zeigler, Ellie Marrin and Kathryn Gasper each adding one to the board.
Ireton’s first loss of the season in conference play dropped them into a tie with Holy Cross, who owns the tiebreaker with the win on Friday. The WCAC challenge now is the undefeated Falcons on Tuesday who earlier thumped Holy Cross 23-9.
The week ended on the happier note for Cardinal faithful with an Ireton victory over the Bullis School on Saturday night. The Cardinals brought to the Bullis stadium all the energy they showed in the Holy Cross game to beat the Bulldogs 11-6. A pumped up defense held Bullis to four goals in the first half. Maddie Zeigler was credited with three goals and two assists, Catie Isham two goals and Sarah Rupp, Ellie Marrin (with one assist) , Aubrey Gartlan and Eva Irwin one goal each.
A strong, vigilant defense by Eva Irwin, Katherine Simmons, Oliva O’Sullivan, and Gabby Barowsky and some powerful saves by goalie Maggie Covert kept the Bullis offense in check, holding the Bulldogs to four goals to close the first half with a score of 9-4. In the second half the defense on each side limited the action on the board to two goals each side. Ellie Marrin and Aubrey Gartlan scored Ireton’s two remaining shots with a final score of 11-6.
Ireton heads into the final two contests of the WCAC calendar, with Good Counsel Tuesday and senior day at Fannon Field when Bishop McNamara calls on the Cardinals. In the meantime, Friday’s home game with Sidwell Friends has been cancelled. The Cardinals will travel to the Potomac School on Saturday, April 16th before concluding the home season with the Mustangs the following Tuesday.
Collegiate School, a Richmond powerhouse, has been added to the schedule to replacing Sidwell Friends, the Cardinals will travel to Richmond on April 28th. Road tilts at Holy Child and Stone Ridge round out the balance of the rapidly passing 2011 regular season.
WCAC tournament action begins with quarterfinal action on Tuesday, May 3rd and ends with the championship on May 9th at the University of Maryland’s Ludwig Field.
