The weather took center stage at Saturday’s  Wolverine invitational  at North Stafford High School with impossible winds, cold, and even rain.   The weather did not stop the girls’ team of veterans and newcomers from performing and scoring medals in 14 of the events inwhich they were entered.   Medals were given out to the top 8 performances in individual events and the top 4 in the relays.

New head coach Mike Resnick has put together a meet schedule that combines invitational’s and tri-meets.   These meets give our school a chance to showcase the Cardinals’ very talented varsity team and newcomers.

At yesterdays invitational the girls’ team was led by Catholic state champs Shannon Gordon and Nicole Bond.  Shannon won medals in 4 events (100 m hurdles, High Jump,
300 m hurdles, and the 4×400 meter relay).  In similar fashion Nicole won medals in the 100m,200m, and the 4×400 m relay.  The team gained the talents of a  junior transfer from North Carolina who first turned heads with her soccer season in the fall.  Junior Anna Wissler won a medal in the 800, 4×400, and 4×800.  Other medals were won by seniors Marin Nolan in the 4×400 and 4×800, and Madeline Thomas in the 4×800.

Joanna Faletti also won a medal in the 4×800, after turning in one of the most  inspiring performances by a BI track athlete in some time.  It was not obvious that Joanna had practiced through a week of back pain when she took the baton in fourth place on her leg of the 4×800 and brought the team all the way back to second place finish in the competitive event.

BJ Townley turned in the days best performance earning medals in the 110 high hurdles, 300 hurdles, and the 4×400 meter relay with the boys’ team.  Other individual medals were won by Murphy Costigan in the 1600, and 4×800 meter relay.  Mike Anderson  won a medal in the 800 and the 4×400.   He was joined in the 4×400 by Sam Ferrara, BJ, and Khyree Robinson.  Khyree is one the freshman that has already  earned a spot on a varsity relay team.

Next week the teams will compete in the Mountain View invitational.  Hopefully the weather will be more cooperative.  If not,  the early results of the season suggest BI track team will still show up and compete.  They always do.
