Bishop O’Connell softball demonstrated why they are one of the best teams in the country on Wednesday as they beat the Cardinals 12-2 in a full 7 inning game. With the loss, Ireton drops to 6-3 on the year.
The game was a pitcher’s duel through four full innings with Micki Crouch shutting down the potent O’Connell offense. Junior Debbie Ward played a solid left field, keeping the score close. In the 5th inning, O’Connell jumped out in front with a 3 run homer and then followed with 3 more before the inning ended. They attacked again in the sixth, scoring another 4 runs.
The Cardinals had 6 hits in the game including a Micki Crouch lead off double and singles by Carolyn Boddie and Debbie Ward. The Ireton runs came in the 6th inning with consecutive singles by Heather Pearson and Susie Rhodes who were then driven home by a Meghan Pearson double to right center field.
“We played well against an excellent team today, Our defense played well against a hard hitting offense,” commented Ireton Coach Terri Pearson. “If we can sustain this level of play we are going to be a formidable opponent for anyone.”
The Cardinals return to Luckett field on Friday afternoon against St. Mary’s Ryken.
