Fast Start Propels Cardinals Past St Stephens/St Agnes

Moses Webb rushes for some of his 200 all purpose yards in Ireton win at St Stephens

Bishop Ireton’s Cardinals stunned the home crowd scoring three touchdowns in a matter of minutes on their way to a 49-13 victory over their neighborhood rivals. Junior Moses Webb had his best day of the young season with more than 200 all purpose yards for Ireton and a pair of touchdowns, while Malcolm Westbrook found the end zone three times in the one-sided win.
It was the Saints in 1967 that became Bishop Ireton’s first ever varsity football win as the new Catholic school topped the all-boys St Stephens School by a 14-2 count in Cardinal’s inaugural varsity season. The win Saturday gives Ireton its first four- game winning streak in the series, which stands 10-13-1 over the years in favor of the Saints. The 49 points was the most ever scored by Ireton in the series and equaled the Saints 1980 squad that hung 49 on the Cardinals that year.
Ireton took the opening kickoff and engineered a 74-yard drive behind the passing of PJ Zingler and the running of Moses Webb to quickly take the Cardinals to the 12 yard line. Zingler then found Malcolm Westbrook for a touchdown. On the ensuing kickoff, senior Theo Daubresse chipped the kick to a Saints’ lineman who fumbled the kick and Brandon Price-Williams recovered at the Saint 40.
Zingler quickly found Anthony Rivers for an apparent 40yd TD pass until off-setting penalties nullified the play. He came right back on a screen pass to Moses Webb and the speedy junior dashed the 40 yards into the end zone on the next play. Daubresse made it 14-0 with his second PAT.
When the St Stephens offense finally got on the field, it quickly was ambushed by the Cardinals. After gaining a first down, the red clad hosts tossed a pass into the flat that Ned Curry instantly recognized as a backward pass, treated as a lateral in the rulebook. He scooped up the loose ball and dashed 36 yards untouched and suddenly it was 21-0 and the Saints had run only three plays on offense.
A personal foul on Ireton pushed the kickoff to the Ireton 25 and the Saints would capitalize on the field position. Darius Manora , the Saints’ workhorse in the backfield this day, carried the home team to the Ireton 16. Brent Armstrong found Jenai Molock in the end zone for a Saints score, Habliston’s PAT cutting the deficit to 21-7.
The Cardinals seemed to outrun themselves with the fast start and St Stephens regrouped. Ireton punted, Westbrook intercepted a pass to stop the next Saint’s drive, but Zingler was victimized by a Whitaker interception to return the pigskin to the home team.
Penalties and miscues as much as St Stephens halted the Cambridge Road crew as the second quarter wore on and much of the second scoring drive for the Saints resulted from Ireton penalties. But the actual damage was done when Armstrong delivered a perfect strike down the middle of the field for a 52-yard TD pass. A blocked PAT saved a point, but the home squad was back in the game at 21-13.
Ireton continued to wear down the defense with a steady diet of Moses Webb and Brandon Price-Williams. A Saints’ personal foul moved the ball to the St Stephens 28 and Zingler found Westbrook for his second of three TD’s he would score on the day, this one from 28 yards. Ireton took a 28-13 lead to the locker room on a day where the home team debuted its new bleachers and press box, but couldn’t get the scoreboard to operate reliably and had to rely on the officials’ clock on the field.
The second half was more of the same, the Saints struggling for yardage on offense, the Cardinals yielding ground mainly on penalties, which came frequently to both sides. Ireton engineered a smooth drive to open the third quarter have a Saints punt.
With captain Tommy Gallinaro catching Zingler tosses, Webb running masterfully with inside screens and end runs, Ireton consumed clock and real estate as they marched for their fifth score, a 9 yard shovel pass to Moses Webb, his second score of the contest. When the Cardinals blocked a punt at the Saints 5 yard line, they quickly capitalized on the turnover with a pair of Andrew Bladen quarterback keepers and his second attempt yielded a 2-yard touchdown. Daubresse ended his day with a sixth straight PAT and the rout was on.
The fourth quarter saw a number of players make their entrance for the first time in the game. When Ireton put together back to back quarterback sacks, the Saints punted from their own end zone. The kick angled toward the Ireton bench and seemed destined to continue out of bounds. As it appeared a number of players eased back, the ball hopped down the sideline and toward a Malcolm Westbrook coming to full stride as he fielded the ball. He quickly broke past the startled coverage, got two good blocks and streaked untouched into the end zone for a 40 yard touchdown.
Bishop Ireton (1-3) has a date at the Bullis Bulldogs (2-2) next Saturday before returning to Fannon Field on Oct 9th when St Albans visits Alexandria. Ireton topped Bullis 28-0 last fall.

Harriers record strong performances at Woodberry Forest Meet

The Bishop Ireton cross country team traveled to the Woodberry Forest school this past Saturday to compete in the Woodberry Forest Invitational where they would meet 20+ teams on a course that many would call “quite difficult”. As the Ireton football team battled the Tigers on the gridiron, the Ireton harriers mixed it up with the likes of Paul VI, Woodberry and Episcopal on the infamous Woodberry golf course. The weather was perfect and the competition was intense which made it a great day for the Ireton XC program.

The Ireton ladies took to the course first as the weather started to warm up from the earlier cool morning temperatures. Margaret Nealon led the way for the Cardinals as she finished 25th overall and was followed closely by Eva Irwin. Rounding out the top 5 were Mary Johnson, Lauren Freshwater and freshman Maria Manzek. Nealon’s time was good enough to earn her a spot on the varsity top 7 and will race as Ireton’s #4 girl this weekend at the Oatlands Invitational. The JV ladies placed 4th overall out of 13 teams as they defeated such teams as Episcopal, PVI and Brooke Point.

Next up were the varsity girls who ended up finishing 8th out of 20 teams. Aubrey Gartlan led the way again for the Cardinals as she finished 35th overall. She was followed closely by Sophomore transfer Alex Georgi (42nd) and Marin Nolan (58th). Rounding out the top 5 were Sarah Fyffe and Shannon Gordon. Both Nolan and Gordon are in their first cross country season after competing in volleyball and cheerleading over the past few years. “They’re just all around great athletes” said Coach Byrnes “They’ve both competed in track over the past few years and this is a little bit different but I knew they were capable of competing in cross country and we’re lucky to have them”. There were also come impressive performances from the freshman ranks as Annie Barletta, Kelsey O’Hern and Loren Gant all finished within Ireton’s top 8. Barletta will compete with the varsity top 7 this weekend at Oatlands.

Speaking of impressive freshmen, the Ireton JV boys race unveiled a little bit of what the future may look like from the boys side. Four out of the top five spots for Ireton in the JV race were filled by freshmen. Michael LoGrande took the top spot as he finished 15th overall and broke 20 minutes. Close behind were Steven Gottlieb (17th), Jack Leyden (23rd), Stephen Washington (39th) and Conor Padden (50th). Ireton’s top 5 finishers were good enough for a 3rd place team finish overall as they defeated all other private schools in the event.

Finally it wad the varsity boys’ turn on the course. The weather had really heated up at this point and the hilly Woodberry course was sure to make it tough on everybody. Finishing with exactly the same time, Liam O’Connor and Mike Andersen crossed the line together for a strong 1-2 punch for the Cardinals. Finishing 3rd for Ireton was Kevin Moran who was then followed by Nick Manzek and Murphy Costigan. Dan Burns, Connor Pearson and Alex Carpenter rounded out the top 8 for Ireton. The Ireton varsity boys placed 5th out of 27 teams as they defeated all private schools except host Woodberry. Coach Byrnes said, “I think it was a great day overall. Obviously, I was a little worried about losing so many seniors after this season but what I saw today made me confident that this new batch of freshmen on both the boys and girls side will more than make up for the athletes we lose to graduation. We came here to get a feel for what the Independent State meet will be like since it’s raced on the same course and in the end we competed very well against some tough competition…I’m happy with how we did today on such a tough course”.

The Ireton cross country team will compete this Saturday at the Oatlands Invitational in Leesburg, Virginia.

Fast Start Sinks Cardinals, 38-0

There will be better days for Bishop Ireton (0-3) than the football Cardinals experienced on Saturday.  The Tigers of Woodberry Forest (2-0)scored on the game’s opening kickoff and never looked back, roaring to a 28-0 halftime lead enroute to a 38-0 win in Woodberry Forest, Virginia Saturday.

The host’s CJ Prosise gathered in the kickoff and raced 90 yards to open the scoring. Ireton struggled to respond and the Tigers scored their second touchdown of the afternoon on a 4th down play to go up 14-0. When quarterback Jacob Ramey rambled up the middle on Woodberry’s third possession 40 yards to score, the Cardinals were reeling. A long punt return set up a second Rue Hockensmith touchdown and the Cardinals, with only 37 yards of offense in the opening half, were in a deep hole.

The second half was much the same as Ireton could muster little offense on the afternoon but played stronger on both sides of the ball, yielding 10 points in the second half.

Ireton returns to Alexandria for a trip to St Stephens, St Agnes to tangle with the cross-town Saints. The red and green hosts look for their first win of the season (0-2) against Ireton as well as the opportunity to break a three-game skid with the Cardinals dating back to a 2007 loss on St Stephens Road when both clubs qualified for the Viriginia Independent Schools Football playoffs. Gametime is 2pm.

Girls Top Mustangs, Boys fall

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times…..the girls continued their strong play in the WCAC with a 2-0 win at McNamara while the boys’ woes offensively continued in a 3-0 setback on Fannon Field.

The good news was that Ireton’s girls continued its strong play with junior all conference player, Katrina Guillou orchestrating an offense that continues to find new contributors each game. Today it was Lyndsey Marti and Katrina Azar who netted goals for the Cardinals while the strong play on the defense and midfield kept the Mustangs off the board.

For Ireton’s boys, it was a 2-0 first half with few opportunities generated as Bishop McNamara smothered the Cardinals once they seized a lead.  The clincher came with less than two minutes to play and the day was done for Ireton.

The road gets tougher for both squads as the boys (0-4) travel to DeMatha on Tuesday and the girls (3-1-1, 3-0), with a share of first place at stake, host a surprising Elizabeth Seton squad that ambushed Bishop O’Connell 1-0 in Arlington earlier this week.

The JV contests followed suit as McNamara edged the boys, 2-1, while Ireton’s girls drilled the Forestville hosts, 8-1.

St Pius X battles Cardinals to a Scoreless Draw

The rain threatened early on a blustery, warm afternoon, but the Sartans and Cardinals battled through the overcast conditions to 0-0 tie in a friendly match on Fannon Field Thursday. The Albuquerque, New Mexico high school arrived in Washington Wednesday, but showed no evidence of fatigue as they played the first of two games during their stay in DC.

The contest saw both clubs play a closely marked game, Ireton controlling the ball much of the contest but not generating the scoring opportunities head coach Marianna Sullivan hoped to see. “We moved the ball well, showed patience, and poise, but I would like to have seen us convert that into more scoring chances.”  The Cardinals did put 8 shots on junior keeper Kila Hartom, but she was equal to the challenge on every shot.

The Sartans’ senior defender Rebecca Brunson had much to do with the Cardinals inability to score as well and Brunson’s direct kick from deep in her own zone briefly sprang junior Emma Durkin on a break with 4 minutes to play before the Cardinals’ keeper Jess Bobeck turned away the threat.

St Pius had five shots in the first half but did not muster a good scoring chance in the second period as the late pass eluded Durkin.  Ireton’s Helena Barber, Hannah Thomas, Nicole Bond, and Caroline Boddie patrolled the Cardinals end efficiently throughout the game and while Karina Azar, Katrina Guillou, Ciana Puglise, and Anna Wissler possessed the ball for large periods of time but couldn’t create the chances Ireton’s Sullivan hoped to see.

“It was a good test for us.” commented coach Dave Sullivan. “We enjoyed the visit here and look forward to seeing the sites tonight and Friday.”   For the Sartans, they visit last year’s Washington Catholic Athletic Conference’s tourney finalists in the Cadets of St Johns College High School Saturday at 2pm.  Meanwhile, the Cardinals hit the road Friday for a conference tilt with the Mustangs of Bishop McNamara, where the Cardinals hope to move to 3-0 in the young conference campaign.  Gametime in Forestviille is 4pm, with a JV contest to follow.

Panthers Clawed 4-1

Bishop Ireton won its second WCAC matchup in two tries with a 4-1 win over Paul VI Catholic (1-4, 1-2) on Fannon Field Tuesday. The Cardinals (2-1, 2-0) fell behind early, only at 1:14 into the contest on a goal by Alyana Heney. Her line drive over the outstretched arms of senior Jess Bobeck was the only shot to elude the steady keeper, who Coach Marianna Sullivan named the Cardinal player of the game.

Junior Gaby Goddette took over the scoring at that point and notched a pair of goals, with 16:17 left in the first stanza and her second, with an assist from Kelsey O’Leary,  at 1:22 remaining, send Ireton into the locker room up 2-1.

The second half belonged to the Cardinals, as the team dominated the ball and controlled the play. Junior Ciana Puglise tallied Ireton’s third marker with just over 33 minutes remaining and freshman Adrienne Maday, a pleasant surprise for the club, made it 4-1 with 22:33 remaining in the contest.

While the offense peppered PVI throughout the game, Bobeck turned in a spectacular performance in the goal for Ireton. “She was unquestionably our player of the game.” commented head coach Marianna Sullivan. “She bounced back from that quick first goal, and our team responded by rallying to come back, something we haven’t done well in the past.”  She was also effusive in her praise of her offensive players. “I was glad to see more and different players score for us today. Gabby had two goals, but Ciana and Adrienne make it much harder for a team to focus on just one or two players to mark closely. Mulitple scorers make us much more dangerous.”

The Cardinals go back to work on Thursday as they host St Pius X from Albuquerque, New Mexico, before heading to Bishop McNamara on Friday for a date with the Mustangs at Toyoka Jackson Field. Gametime for both contests is 4pm. There is no JV game on Thursday, the young Cardinals will square off with the Mustangs in Forestville approximately 5:30pm

Ireton JV bolted to a 2-0 halftime lead enroute to a 4-1 win as well in the nightcap with the Panthers.
