Panthers Clawed 4-1

Bishop Ireton won its second WCAC matchup in two tries with a 4-1 win over Paul VI Catholic (1-4, 1-2) on Fannon Field Tuesday. The Cardinals (2-1, 2-0) fell behind early, only at 1:14 into the contest on a goal by Alyana Heney. Her line drive over the outstretched arms of senior Jess Bobeck was the only shot to elude the steady keeper, who Coach Marianna Sullivan named the Cardinal player of the game.

Junior Gaby Goddette took over the scoring at that point and notched a pair of goals, with 16:17 left in the first stanza and her second, with an assist from Kelsey O’Leary,  at 1:22 remaining, send Ireton into the locker room up 2-1.

The second half belonged to the Cardinals, as the team dominated the ball and controlled the play. Junior Ciana Puglise tallied Ireton’s third marker with just over 33 minutes remaining and freshman Adrienne Maday, a pleasant surprise for the club, made it 4-1 with 22:33 remaining in the contest.

While the offense peppered PVI throughout the game, Bobeck turned in a spectacular performance in the goal for Ireton. “She was unquestionably our player of the game.” commented head coach Marianna Sullivan. “She bounced back from that quick first goal, and our team responded by rallying to come back, something we haven’t done well in the past.”  She was also effusive in her praise of her offensive players. “I was glad to see more and different players score for us today. Gabby had two goals, but Ciana and Adrienne make it much harder for a team to focus on just one or two players to mark closely. Mulitple scorers make us much more dangerous.”

The Cardinals go back to work on Thursday as they host St Pius X from Albuquerque, New Mexico, before heading to Bishop McNamara on Friday for a date with the Mustangs at Toyoka Jackson Field. Gametime for both contests is 4pm. There is no JV game on Thursday, the young Cardinals will square off with the Mustangs in Forestville approximately 5:30pm

Ireton JV bolted to a 2-0 halftime lead enroute to a 4-1 win as well in the nightcap with the Panthers.
