The O’Connell Varsity netters traveled cross town to meet the Ireton ladies yesterday at Carl Sandburg Middle school, the Cardinals home. In singles positions Monica Zakaria won (8-0) at #1 and Christy Macey won (8-2) at #3 but the depth of O’Connell’s lineup took out the balance of Ireton’s singles players after lengthy battles.First to fall, Senior Allie Laclede lost (1-8) at #6, followed by Natalia Spinetto (5-8) at #5, Nicole Williams (4-8) at #4 and Mary Rose White losing (3-8) at #2.
Doubles play began needing a sweep of three matches to take the match. Taking an early lead #1 doubles team Monica Zakaria and Nicole Williams mesmerized the spectators with Zakaria’s strong cross-court forehands and William’s quick hands at the net but the Knight’s ladies stood strong and took the lead to win (3-8). Juniors #2 team Mary Rose White and Christy Macey decisively won (8-4) at #2. And battling back from O’Connell’s early lead at #3 doubles sophomore Natalia Spinetto and senior Allie Laclede fought to the end winning (8-6).
The Lady Cardinals stand 3-2 in WCAC play and will face another tough rival Holy Cross today at 4pm at Georgetown Prep in Maryland.
