The visiting Alexandrians jumped out to a early 13-6 first quarter lead they would never relinquish.  Ireton went to the intermission up 25-18.  The Cardinals came out of the locker room fast in the third quarter, behind Moseh’s 7 points, to extend their advantage to 38-25 and coasted home for the win.

Middleburg's Candice Berner boxes out on the Cardinals' Kelly Gallagher (55) on free throws in Ireton's 54-22 win Saturday.

Led by junior Alexandra Stipano’s 19 points, the Cardinals coasted to a 54-22 victory over Middleburg Academy on Saturday, completing a home and home series sweep for the 2013-14 campaign.

Bishop Ireton raced out to a 15-6 first period advantage, then blew the game open with a 19-3 second stanza to head to the locker room with a 34-9 halftime margin.

Stipano wasted no time putting points on the board for the Cardinals, scoring eight in the first period.  Lauryn Mitchell paced Middleburg Academy’s offense with eight points, including three during the second period.

Lions break open a tight game to top Cardinals in Alexandria

Junior Cece Leone (31) is fouled by the Lions' Courtney Crawford (34) in action Friday night in Godley Gym.

Archbishop Carroll and Bishop Ireton came out fast in the girls varsity contest in Alexandria Friday, but it was the Cardinals that cooled off while the Lions roared by them for a 69-36 win Friday.

Both clubs scored early and often as the visiting Carroll edged out to an 18-13 advantage in a high-scoring opening stanza.  While the Lions kept up the torrid scoring pace, they also turned up the defensive pressure with devastating effect. The 15-3 margin in the second period seemingly doomed the home team to a setback as they headed to the locker room down 33-16.

Ireton rebounded in the third quarter, outscoring the green and gold clad opponents 15-13 but still trailed 46-31 heading into the final period. Once again, Coach Edith White’s Lions stepped it up on offense and piled 23 4th quarter points on the Cardinals to win the game going away.

Junior Cece Leone again led Ireton with 14 points while Alex Stipano contributed six and Charlotte Sofield added 4.   Archbishop Carroll was led by three players in double figures, including Courtney Crawford with 12, Jenna Patterson with 11, and Kenyatta Butler with 10.

Next up for the Cardinals is Middleburg Academy at 1pm on Saturday in Godley Gym.  The 7-7 Dragons had a tight game last year in Middleburg with the visiting Cardinals who end their current home stand Saturday, returning to WCAC play at Bishop McNamara on Tuesday.

Busy hoops week for Girls basketball

Junior Cece Leone, (31) leads the Cardinals in scoring at 10.1 ppg.

A busy week of basketball for Bishop Ireton’s girls basketball, one that resulted in a pair of narrow setbacks and a lopsided loss for the Cardinals.

The Cardinals travelled to Holy Cross where the Tartans entertained the Alexandria school in a high scoring affair.  The home team led 15-14 after one period, then jumped on Ireton with a 21-10 second quarter to take a 36-24 advantage into the locker room.

Ireton battled back in a high scoring third period to trail  54-45 heading to the 4th quarter.   The Cardinals would outscore Holy Cross 29-26 in that final period, but fell 80-74.   Cece Leone led the Cardinals with a game-high 24 points while Alex Stipano added 18.  Amber Baker of  Holy Cross led the Tartans with 19, one of four to score in double figures and overall ten players for the home team tallied points.

The Cardinals visited Holy Child on Friday for another road contest, this one a more defensive display.   Again the Cardinals fell behind early, trailing 31-19, but battled back in the second half of the contest to close to a 56-51 setback in the final.

Once again, it was Stipano, with 20, and Leone, with 15, that led Ireton in scoring.  Talley Britt, with an amazing 18-18 from the free throw line, that led all scorers with 25.

Saturday afternoon brought the Knights of St Mary’s Ryken to Godley Gym for a conference tilt.  The cold, rainy day had little effect on the visiting Knights, who quickly jumped out to a 21-7 lead after one period. Their smothering full court pressure hounded the perhaps weary Cardinals throughout the first half as they built a 42-21 halftime margin.

The third quarter saw the lead grow to 58-28, and both squads substituted liberally in the game’s final quarter enroute to a 75-45 final.

The weekend leaves the Cardinals at 4-12 on the year, 0-7 in the WCAC. Next up for Bishop Ireton is a home date with the Falcons of Good Counsel.  A tripleheader, the freshmen game opens the evening at 4pm followed by the 9-2 JV Cardinals at 5:45, and the varsity tipoff is slated for 7:30pm.  The varsity game will be live streamed at FFMSports with Jack Lohrer doing the play-by-play.

Third Overtime a Charm as Cardinals top Ryken, 69-66

Senior Jamie Senff was one of four Ireton seniors to score in double figures in the Cardinals win at SMR Saturday afternoon.

Playing in their third overtime game of the year and their second in as many starts, Bishop Ireton had a happy ending as the Cardinals outlasted St. Mary’s Ryken 69-66 Saturday in Leonardtown.

The Knights’ newcomer, Jarin Hilson, led all scorers with 33 points, singlehandedly keeping the home team close all afternoon.  Ireton countered with balanced scoring, including four Cardinals in double figures.  Senior Patrick Moseh and Ty Quarles each had 15 points, Dan Noe added 14, and Jamie Senff had another big day with 13 points.

Bishop Ireton broke on top after one period, 15-11, then held on as the Knights closed the margin to one at the intermission, 24-23.  Coach Neil Berkman’s charges would extend the lead to 40-36 after three periods.

The lead grew to seven in the final stanza before Ryken rallied to tie the game with a layup at the buzzer 56-56, forcing overtime.  In overtime, it was the Cardinals that prevailed, giving the visitors their first win in WCAC play after four grueling setbacks to the conference’s upper echelon squads.   Ireton improved to 9-5 on the year, 1-4 in the WCAC.

Ireton remains on the road with a tripleheader match up in Olney on Tuesday when they face a dangerous, but winless Good Counsel (0-9, 0-6) at 7:30 at the Kane Center.
