Cardinals’ boys hoopsters limp to pair of close weekend losses

Senior Antonio Rouse drives to the basket in the game's late stages

by Brian Kapur, DCSportsFan. com

Junior guard Marcus Hayes has stepped up his game as three starters are sidelined by injuries

With just 17.3 seconds to go in the game, St. John’s brought the ball up court. The Cadets trailed Bishop Ireton by one and needed just one final bucket to score the go-ahead points.

Enter freshman James Mitchell.

The young guard found the ball in his hands with under 10 seconds to play after collecting a loose ball. He did not hesitate, went up strong and finished with a runner to give St. John’s the lead and four seconds later a 47-46 win.

“I got the ball and was going to the basket looking to create,” Mitchell said. “ But it was open and I just went up and had the confidence in myself to finish.”

It was the Cadets first WCAC win of the season; meanwhile Bishop Ireton fell to 0-3 in conference play and blew an 11-point lead with under four minutes to play in the process.

“We were very fortunate,” St. John’s head coach Paul DeStefano said. “Sometimes it’s better to be lucky than good. My hats off to Bishop Ireton, they were missing two starters and they played very well. Their zone gave us a lot of problems.”

Ireton led 44-33 with under four minutes to go. But St. John’s cranked up the pressure on defense, which resulted in turnovers. But it also gave fouls and bonus free throws to Ireton, but the Cardinals could not take advantage. The Cardinals missed their last six free throws.

“The last two or three minutes our pressure allowed us to get some turnovers and steals,” DeStefano said. “They missed some free throws, which made it possible for us. We feel very fortunate.”

The Cadets were led by Julain DeBose who scored 18 points. Meanwhile freshman Darian Anderson added in 11 points. The night’s hero, Mitchell, finished the game with just five points, but the last two proved to be the most critical.

For Ireton the loss was gut churning. Ireton and St. John’s showed each other tough 2-3 zone defensive looks and the Cadets were able to escape the first quarter with a 10-9 lead after a three-point play by Rudy Anderson.

St. John’s would build off it immediately in the second quarter by converting a free throw to take a 11-9 lead. But that would be the only point St. John’s would score in the second quarter.

“That’s been our (problem); we have games where go eight or 10 minutes without scoring,” DeStefano said.

Led by Marcus Hayes, who scored 20 points on the night, Ireton built a 20-11 halftime lead.

“The 2-3 zone defense is our bread and butter,” Ireton head coach Neil Berkman said. “We try to emulate the Syracuse zone. We do a good job of bumping, rotating and chasing guys off the three-point line. We also gang rebound.”

St. John’s came out in the third quarter looking to get back into the game and Mitchell stole the ball and scored quickly to end the Cadet’s scoring drought. But then after a pair of turnovers, Hayes hit a trey for the Cardinals to again balloon the lead to double digits.

St. John’s refused to go away and continued to chip their way back into the game and entered the fourth quarter trailing 34-27.

In the fourth quarter, the Cadets rallied while the Cardinals crumbled as the game reached the final stretch.

“We have to close out games like this at home,” Berkman said. “We were down two starters to begin with and lost another during the game. The team was scrappy and competing hard. Teaching kids how to win is the hardest part. We were 15 of 15 on free throws for most of the game, but missed our last six. We need to move forward and learn from this game.”

The news didn’t get any better on Saturday as the Cardinals, now down three starters with the loss of junior Malcolm Westbrook, hosted a hungry Flint Hill Huskies squad looking for a much needed VISAA win.

As is becoming a trademark of Cardinal basketball, the undermanned hosts played the Oakton visitors tough, but couldn’t come back in the final quarter falling 69-62.  Hayes again led the Cardinals in scoring with 25 while Antonio Rouse also contributed 20.  Senior Sam Walters came off the bench to snare a Berkman-era high 17 rebounds for the redbirds in the loss.

The Cardinals (8-6, 0-3) host Paul VI Catholic on Tuesday before heading to Bishop O’Connell for a Friday night tilt. Tipoff for both contests is scheduled for 7:30pm.

Ireton wins 4 dual meets, Gonzaga, Mustangs loom Wednesday

Senior Ricky Baier continues to be one of a number of Ireton wrestlers having a superb season for the VISAA's top-ranked Cardinals

Bishop Ireton wrestlers brought the team record to 8-1 with two victories against WCAC foes St. Johns and St. Mary’s Ryken earlier in the week and two victories against Virginia Independent School rivals,  Richmond’s  Collegiate and Fork Union Military Academy on Saturday.  On both of the two outings spectators were treated to several exhibition matches that provided a sneak peek at a new varsity heavy weight wrestler as well as some ofthe Cardinals’ junior varsity wrestlers.

In the first meet of the week against the St. John’s Cadets, the Bishop Ireton Cardinals achieved a decisive 61-15 victory with individual wins from all but two of our wrestlers and seven of those by pin.  Setting the pace with the first pin of the match was sophomore Andrew Baehre wrestling at 135lbs, who pinned his opponent in 5:48. This was followed by pins from senior Ricky Baier at 140lbs in 4:46; junior Andrew Lutterloh at 215lbs in 1:03; senior Elliot Mondragon at 103lbs in :39; junior Darcy Gomez at 112lbs in 1:02; senior Arslan Ryspekov in :36 at 119lbs; and sophomore Jeff Severini at 125lbs in 2:48. Fastest pin of the match goes to Arslan Ryspekov who achieved his fastest career pin in :36, breaking his previous record of :54 from last year. Ireton spectators were treated to several exhibition matches from freshman Connor Reilly, senior James Oliva, junior Matt Dubow, and our new varsity 285lb wrestler Jimmy Keegan, who pinned his opponent in his first wrestling competition.

The Cardinals 51-24 win against the St. Marys Ryken Knights was slightly more hard fought, but equally as satisfying as the grapplers achieved nine wins, five of which were by pin. Achieving pins for Ireton were senior Aslan Ryspekov at 119lbs in 1:36; sophomore Nick Womach at 130lbs in 5:26; senior Ricky Baier at 140lbs in 4:35; junior Andrew Bladen at 171lbs in 1:31; and junior Andrew Lutterloh at 215lbs in 2:35. Additional wins included that from junior Michael Rodriguez, with a 15-11 decision and three wins by forfeit from senior Elliot Mondragon, junior Darcy Gomez, and junior Ben Nagao. The fastest pin of the competition was achieved by Andrew Bladen, who pinned his opponent in 1:31.

Our snowy trek to Fork Union, VA on Saturday was rewarded by the addition of two more wins to increasingly successful record.   Cardinal grapplers were most impressive in their 63-12 win and first competition of the day against the Fork Union Military Academy Blue Devils.  In that match up the Cards won eleven individual matches, with seven earned by pin.   Setting the pace with pins was senior Elliot Mondragon in :20, Darcy Gomez in :36, Andrew Baehre in 1:26, Ricky Baier in :43, sophomore Tommy Dean at 145lbs in 1:04, junior Michael Rodriguez wrestling up at 152lbs in 3:09, and junior Andrew Bladen at 171lbs in 5:12. Additional wins were earned by sophomore Nick Womach with a 10-5 decision; junior Andrew Lutterloh with a 8-6 decision, and a win by forfeit from Arslan Ryspekov. The fastest pin of the match was accomplished by Elliot Mondragon in :20. Following this match, Connor Bevridge, Aiden Brookshir, Matt Dubow, Tommy Kelly, James Oliva, and Connor Reilly all showcased their talent in exhibition matches, all but two of which were won.
In our second match of the day the Cards once again were victorious with a 51-22 win against the Richmond’s Collegiate Cougars, featuring the VISAA’s first and second ranked teams.   In this match nine of our wrestlers won their individual matches, with five by pins.   Setting the pace with a pin in the first bout of this match was junior Darcy Gomez at 112lbs who pinned his opponent in :52.   Following Darcy’s lead with pins were sophomore Nick Womach at 130lbs in 5:06, sophomore Andrew Baehre at 135 in :49, senior Ricky Baier at 140lbs in 3:44, and senior Elliot Mondragon at 103lbs who again achieved the fastest pin of the match in :19.

The Cardinals continue to impress with legions of supporters who travel to back the redbirds, including the parents who came out to support the wrestlers, especially those who took the snowy trek out to Fork Union on Saturday.
The week ahead will be very busy for Ireton matmen as they will have matches against seven schools. Those matches will start on Wednesday (1/12/2011) with a tri-meet against WCAC rivals the Gonzaga Eagles and the Bishop McNamara Mustangs. Wrestling begins at 5:00pm in Godley Gym. On Thursday (1/13/2011), our grapplers will travel to Norfolk, VA for matches against York High School and the Norfolk Academy Bulldogs.   Wrestling will begin around 4:30pm at Norfolk Academy High School (1585 Wesleyan Drive, Norfolk, VA 23502). The upcoming competitions will be highlighted by the Alexandria City Duals on Friday (1/14/2011) against St. Stephens St. Agnes, Episcopal, and T.C. Williams High Schools.  Wrestling will begin at 4:30pm at Episcopal High School (1200 North Quaker Lane, Alexandria).

Hockey Caps Busy Week with Pair of Wins over SMR, Oakton

Senior Dave Souliotis is a 4-year starter for the Cardinals

Tuesday night saw the return of the Ireton Hockey team to the ice with a non-league game against rival St. Marys Ryken.  The afternoon contest at Tucker Road Ice Rink saw the high-powered Cardinal offense in high gear from the start, taking an early first period lead and never looking back.  When all was said and done, the Ireton offense had pumped 50 shots on the Knights goalie, with 11 of them finding the back of the twine.  The Cardinal attack was led by Tom Cyrnak with 5 goals and 3 assists, and Reid Yager who pitched in with 4 goals and 2 assists.  Also on the score sheet for Ireton were James Smith and Luke McGowan, each netting their first goal of the season.  Dan Tangora and Ian Rush rounded out the scoring, each picking up 1 assist.  The SMR offense was continually smothered by the swarming Ireton defensive corps.  Of the 20 shots that managed to get through to goalie Rob Chastain, all were turned away.  The 11-0 whitewashing gave Chastain his first shutout of the season.

The Cardinals second game of the week took place on Friday night with a 7:00 pm NVSHL tilt against a powerful Oakton Cougar squad at the Mt. Vernon Rec Center.  A raucous Ireton crowd filled the stands and witnessed what was easily the most exciting game of the season to date.  Despite a late Oakton rally at the end of the third period, Ireton came out on top, 3-2, in a game that kept everyone on the edge of their seats throughout.  The Cardinals top line of Reid Yager, Tom Cyrnak and James Smith accounted for all 3 Ireton goals on this night, with Smith netting the all-important first goal and Yager scoring the last two.  Smith also notched an assist, and Cyrnak (2 assists) and Robert Chastain (1 assist) completed the scoring.  A very strong effort was also turned in by the second line of Dillon Roach, Duke Roach and Stephen Gerke, who had some excellent scoring chances thwarted by the strong Cougar goalie.  Senior Cardinal goalie Robert Chastain turned in another outstanding effort in net, stopping 35 of 37 Oakton shots, including several in the hectic last minute of the game to preserve the win.  Solid defense all night by the tandems of Nick Tangora/Dan Tangora, and William Chastain/Ian Rush managed to keep the Oakton offense off the scoreboard until late in the third period.  Key minutes were also logged by Luke McGowan, Ben Gerke and Patrick Coyne.  The win brought the Ireton record to 2-3 in the NVSHL, good for 3rd place in the 6-team Smythe division.

Next up for Ireton is a division matchup with a combined Loudoun Valley/Heritage team on Friday night, 9:10 pm, at the Ashburn Ice House.

Cardinal skaters avenge Alumni win in 2009 with 21-7 pasting

Goalie Phil Spiess led a game but outmanned alumni team in the 6th annual affair

This year’s edition of the Bishop Ireton hockey alumni game stood in marked contrast with last year.  The 2009 game featured a back-and-forth free skating evening with the “old guys” hanging on for an 11-10 win.  Apparently, the 2010 edition of Ireton hockey, with nearly 20 skaters, was determined not to see a repeat of last year’s outcome, skating away to a 21-7 win.

The alumni, led by Frank ” mad dog”  Malovic, class of 1992, fell behind early 5-0, then rallied to close the lead to 8-5. But it was all “youngsters” after that.  “I wish we had hockey when I was at Bishop Ireton,” gushed the game alum who logged way too many minutes for the alumni.  Tommy Casey, class of 2009, was newest alumni skater who skated on the other side for the first time.

While the Cardinals fattened their stats at the expense of alumni goalie Phil Spiess (’08), who faced well over 50 shots on goal, the alums countered with Brandon Houle, (’05), Kevin Schrieber (’07), Kevin Warnke (’06), Justin Smith (’06) and Keenan Mulcahey (’08) among the “veteran” Cardinals.

All in good fun, the players retreated to the reception area for some much needed pizza and beverages while they exchanged stories and caught up with each other. Alumni relations director Ryan Fannon and advancement director Terry Rainey were on hand to welcome back the Cardinal alums and wish the squads a merry Christmas.

Ireton dumps undefeated Northwood to claim Chatlee Shootout Championship, 65-53

Bishop Ireton’s boys basketball team made its biggest statement of the young season going on the road to the greater Raleigh area and winning their first tournament in more than a decade at the Chatlee Shootout in Sanford, NC 65-53.

The Cardinals jumped off the bus on Tuesday and opened the tournament with a win over Hoke High School 66-56. They topped the tournament hosts, Lee County in their second contest 53-45, before squaring off with the previously unbeaten Chargers from Pittsboro, NC.  Antonio Rouse led all scorers in the championship game with 24, 21 of which he scored in the second half to propel the Cambridge Road crew.

“It was a great trip for us,” said head coach, Neil Berkman. “We won the tournament, which is obviously a positive, but played some of our best basketball, and bonded as a team.” The squad took the opportunity to visit Duke University, where they dropped in on a Duke women’s practice in Cameron Indoor, and stopped in nearby Chapel Hill where they visited the North Carolina basketball hall of fame.

The win gave the Cardinals an 8-3 record, 0-1 in the WCAC, but their sole loss to DeMatha in league play was the smallest margin of victory (10) that the undefeated Stags had experienced to date.  Coach Neil Berkman’s squad travels to Forestville to face a very good Bishop McNamara Tuesday, then hosts St Johns and former Ireton skipper, Paul DeStefano on Friday, Jan 7th.  Gametime is 7:30pm for both contests.
