Bishop Ireton scored a 66-56 win in Sanford, NC Tuesday night to advance to the semifinals of the Chatlee Shootout. The Cardinals shook off a long bus ride to win the opening game of the 8-team tourney.
With junior guard Marcus Hayes running the offensive end of the floor, Brandon Scales came off the bench to give Ireton the inside game, particularly on the boards, to tilt the struggle in favor of the Virginians. Hayes and senior Antonio Rouse each scored 14 points, Patrick Hanafin added 13, and senior Sam Walters had a season-high 11 for for the Cardinals. Hoke’s Thompson scored a game high 27, but no other Hoke player reached double figures.
Hoke County scored 20 points in first quarter, the contest was tied at 33 after the first half, but the Cardinals turned up the pressure in the second half and yielded only 23 in the second half to pull away for the win.
Redbirds will face Lee County at 8pm Wednesday at Lee County High School “new gym”. If they advance, the championship is 8pm Thursday in the “new gym”. If the Cardinals falter in the semifinals, they will play Thursday at 8pm in the “old gym”.
After the new year, Bishop Ireton heads back the WCAC action to Forestville to challenge the always tough Bishop McNamara Mustangs in a frosh, JV, varsity tripleheader before returning home to host St John’s on Friday Jan 7th.
