Boys’ hoops closes the book on 2013-14 with awards banquet

Renowned college coach Pete Strickland was the keynote speaker at the Bishop Ireton Boys' Basketball banquet on Apr 6th at Bishop Ireton.

Bishop Ireton’s boys’ basketball team honored its varsity team Sunday night during their annual awards banquet.  Guest speaker and long time college coach, Pete Strickland, praised the squad for their season and their class.

“I saw you beat a very good Washington and Lee team early in the season.  You beat them handily and, if you followed their season, they had a very good year.  But you played with a great chemistry and with class, when you got out ahead, you played disciplined basketball, didn’t show anyone up.” lauded the veteran coach. “And, I saw you play your hearts out in a narrow loss at DeMatha.  I’m a DeMatha guy, but I was rooting for your great effort to be rewarded.  And, you know, I was there in the WCAC semifinals, when you played DeMatha again but it wasn’t so close.  You played with the same determination at the end of the game, played hard in the fourth quarter like you did in the first quarter.  You showed people a lot by the way you played.”

Following Strickland’s remarks, head coach Neil Berkman thanked a number of supporters, assistant coaches, and support staff before turning his attention to his team one last time.  “We are doing more than preparing to play basketball.” said Berkman, as he commended the youngest players who filled their roles, none in the spotlight, but all important to the success of the entire team. He went on to praise the defensive prowness of sophomore Jeremiah Brooks and the impact of his loss in the O’Connell win on the Cardinals defeat in the WCAC semifinal. But he saved his most effusive praise for his four seniors.

The New York native commended the hard work and constant improvement of Ty Quarles and Army-bound Jamie Senft.  “Big guys do a lot of growing and their development can be later than other guys, Jamie sure did a lot of growing and maturing as a post player this year.”  Likewise Berkman named senior Patrick Moseh as the squad’s most valuable player, a player that stuck with it for three varsity years continually working and improving, in fact, the 5th year coach suggested Moseh could be one of the best offensive rebounders in the talent-rich WCAC.  Finally,  Dan Noe, heading for the US Naval Academy, was honored as the team’s Cardinal award winner.

“Tireless worker, put up 67,000 jump shots in the gym as a Cardinal, always looking to improve.  When Jamie went down, Dan played the post for us last year. When our point guard transferred, he stepped to play that position this year. ” Berkman pointed out.  “And, as evidence of the type of people we have in our program, Dan and Jamie will attend service academies and commit to defending our country when their college basketball days are completed. Likewise, said Berkman, “Pat Moseh will attend Wheeling Jesuit and no doubt excel. He is a division I talent, but is going where he will get a great education and his best days are still ahead of him, for all these seniors.”

Led by the Maryland alum, the senior class of Coach Berkman, earned 18 wins for the second consecutive season, 48 in their three varsity campaigns.  The Cardinals and WCAC champion Panthers of Paul VI were the only two programs to reach the WCAC semifinals in 2012-13 and 2013-14.  That unparallelled success earned Dan Noe first team, all WCAC honors, while Moseh was a second team selection.  DCSportsFan ranked the Cardinals 7th in the final poll and named Neil Berkman as their Coach of the Year.

Girls Lacrosse: BI vs. St. John’s

The Bishop Ireton girls lacrosse team traveled to St. John’s College High School in Chevy Chase, DC for an outstanding game on April 11. The team came together and played as a team, like always. Cardinals came out strong with a win on a draw and a quick goal. Many of the plays called by the team were executed flawlessly. The passes were on point along with sharp passes, quick sticks, and skilled stick skills. The defense was strong making the opponents drop the ball, and making forced passes. The defense players are very good at helping their teammates know where and when there is an extra player. The re-defending was on point with not letting St. John’s getting to far down field. With the help of the Cole goalie sisters, Olivia and Amelia, the Cardinals were able to fly by SJC. The end score was BI- 17, SJC- 4. The top scorers of the game were Kelly Mathews, Kelly Larkin, Charlotte Sofield, and Kayla Duperrouzel. Many draw controls by Kelly Mathews, Caton Brisbin, and Kaitlin Luzik. This team seems strong and every single girl wants to be in the WCAC Championship this year and their fellow Cardinals are rooting them on. This was game one out of five games in seven days. On April 12 the team will play a very tough competitor, Collegiate.

Cardinals record: 5-1 in the WCAC and 8-1 overall

Senior Night!

Come support the girls team by saying goodbye to our Seniors. The Seniors are Olivia Cole, who is committed to Florida, and Kendall Cunningham, who is committed to Rhodes. We want to wish our two seniors goodbye and good luck in the NCAA. The Senior Night will be Tuesday, April 15 against Bishop O’Connell at 5:30 pm. This will be at Bishop Ireton. Please Come!

Cardinals girls lacrosse split in clash of top ranked teams

Bishop Ireton topped #2 ranked Visitation on Monday, but fell to #3 Good Counsel the following day to start a hectic stretch against a nationally ranked schedule of opponents.

The Bishop Ireton (7-1, 3-1) girls’ lax squad rolled to a landmark victory 13-12 over the visiting Georgetown Visitation Cubs on Monday, April 7; and fell short 12-8, suffering their first setback of the season, to the visiting Good Counsel Falcons on Tuesday, April 8.

Bishop Ireton got out to an early 6-2 lead against Visitation in the first 15 minutes of the game. The Cardinals led 8-4 at the half and played a very hard, aggressive defense throughout the game. During the rain-soaked confrontation, the BI offense picked apart their opponent’s defense with patience, smart passing, and relentless pressure all the way through to the end of the match.

One key to the win was senior goalie Olivia Cole’s big save at point-blank range with less than one minute left to play, thus denying the Cubs any possibility of an overtime win. Cole had eight total saves during the game. For BI on the offensive end, Kelly Mathews had five goals-one assist; Charlotte Sofield got four goals-five assists; Kelly Larkin had two goals; Kendall Cunningham and Christine Macey each got one goal; and Kaitlin Luzik had one assist.

It was the first victory for Ireton over the Cubs since March 19, 2009, when the Cardinals won 17-12 at Fannon Field.

The Cardinals fell short against a talented Good Counsel team in an exceptionally hard-fought contest from beginning to end. BI trailed 0-3 early but battled back to go up 5-4 at halftime. A scoring drought of more than 15 minutes, caused by spectacular goaltending by Eva Pearson and two shots off the goalposts,  doomed the home team in the second half and Ireton fell short at the final buzzer. During the game, Kelly Mathews had three goals; Charlotte Sofield notched one goal-four assists; Kaitlin Luzik had two goals; and Kayla Duperrouzel and Julie Hanson had one goal each.

Basketball great Michael Jordan once said, “Obstacles don’t have to stop you. If you run into a wall, don’t turn around and give up. Figure out how to climb it, go through it, or work around it.” The 2014 Cardinals team finally overcame their Georgetown Visitation obstacle and will regroup and hope to get another opportunity to overcome their Good Counsel obstacle—in all likelihood during the WCAC playoffs in May.

Bishop Ireton is now 4-1 in the WCAC and 7-1 overall. Coming up later this week, the Bishop Ireton girls’ lacrosse team goes to WCAC foe St. John’s in Washington, D.C., this Friday, April 11; and travels down to Collegiate near Richmond on Saturday, April 12.

The team’s three remaining home games at Fannon Field are Monday, April 14, vs. Brighton (New York); Tuesday, April 15, vs. Bishop O’Connell (SENIOR NIGHT); and Thursday, April 17, vs. Springfield (Pennsylvania). All varsity games start at 4:00 p.m. ET.

Redbirds drop of pair of softball contests in weather-plagued week of action

Weather has played havoc with schedules, but Cardinals are playing a game a day pace.

Bishop Ireton’s softball team dropped a pair of games this week, losing a close game to Elizabeth Seton on Wednesday before being overmatched by St. Mary’s Ryken on Friday afternoon. The pair of losses give the Cardinals a 3-4 record overall.

It was a see saw battle at Seton as the two teams traded leads. Ireton jumped out early 1-0 and held on until Seton came back with a pair in the fourth. Ireton regained the lead in the fifth when Molly Jeffers hit a triple and was driven in on a Heather Pearson RBI single to make the score 3-2. Seton came back to tie it in their half of the inning. With the game knotted at 3 going into the final frame, Seton led off with a triple and two batters later a walk off single brought her in to win the game. Molly Jeffers went 2 for 4 with a triple while Susie Rhodes gave up 8 hits and struck out 2 over 6 1/3 innings.

On Friday, Ireton was outplayed by a strong St. Mary’s Ryken team, losing 7-1. After a scoreless first, Ryken was able to get a single run across in the second. The game remained close until the 3rd when Ireton’s defense broke down, allowing 3 runs on a walk, 2 hits and 2 errors making the score 4-0. Ryken then added additional runs in the 5th and 6th innings. Ireton’s lone run came on a Clara Boggs RBI single plating Megan Sullivan who had doubled earlier. Ireton could not do much against strong Ryken pitching, ending the day with only 4 hits and 11 strikeouts.

“It was a tough couple of games,” remarked coach Terri Pearson, “am convinced we could have beaten Seton, but we were simply overmatched against Ryken on Friday.”

It will be a busy week for Ireton this week, after traveling to O’Connell on Monday, the Cardinals host St. Johns on Tuesday, PVI on Wednesday and Holy Cross on Friday. Home games are played on Luckett field, first pitch at 4PM.

National Football Foundation Chapter honors Cardinal players, coach

The National Capital chapter of NFF awarded from left to right, Hudson Sullivan, Coach Tony Verducci, and Taylor Dean. Also pictured (second from the right) is School chaplain, Fr. Ed Bresnahan

The National Capital Chapter of the National Football Foundation recognized Bishop Ireton seniors Hudson Sullivan and Taylor Dean among a group of about thirty scholar-athletes in a dinner held at Army-Navy Country Club on Sunday, April 6, 2014. This was the eighth annual dinner hosted by the Chapter, which includes more than 100 public and private schools in the Washington, D.C. area. Bishop Ireton is one of the few schools with football scholar-athletes recognized at each of these dinners. The list of Ireton football alumni honored by the Foundation include Andrew Rodriguez (Bishop Ireton ’08), who was selected as a National Scholar-Athlete before distinguishing himself at West Point.

The award criteria values academic achievement (40%), football accomplishments (40%) and community service (20%). Hudson Sullivan, a three-time all-state linebacker, was selected as one of three Fidelity Investment Scholar-Athletes this year; an honor that reflects his academic record and the time he volunteers serving senior citizens. Hudson was a two-year member of the Bishop Ireton football leadership council and will attend the United States Naval Academy Prep School next fall as he prepares to continue his scholar-athlete success as a midshipman.

Taylor Dean, who completed his third year of organized football, was nominated for his success on and off the field as well. Taylor was an all-state offensive lineman who played a key role in mentoring freshmen and assisting in the loading and unloading of food at a local food bank. Taylor has been a consistently outstanding student during his time as a Cardinal, leading Emory & Henry College and James Madison University to vie for him as a student-athlete “at the next level.” This marks the second year in a row that the Foundation honored two Bishop Ireton student-athletes going on to continue their studies and football in college; the 2013 honorees were Gino Miller (New Hampshire) and P.J. Zingler (Buffalo).

The National Capital Chapter saluted Bishop Ireton head football coach Tony Verducci and Georgetown Prep head football coach Dan Paro for their leadership and contributions to amateur football. Father Ed Bresnahan joined the Sullivan’s, Dean’s and Verducci’s in representing and celebrating Bishop Ireton at this awards dinner.
