Playing in their third overtime game of the year and their second in as many starts, Bishop Ireton had a happy ending as the Cardinals outlasted St. Mary’s Ryken 69-66 Saturday in Leonardtown.
The Knights’ newcomer, Jarin Hilson, led all scorers with 33 points, singlehandedly keeping the home team close all afternoon. Ireton countered with balanced scoring, including four Cardinals in double figures. Senior Patrick Moseh and Ty Quarles each had 15 points, Dan Noe added 14, and Jamie Senff had another big day with 13 points.
Bishop Ireton broke on top after one period, 15-11, then held on as the Knights closed the margin to one at the intermission, 24-23. Coach Neil Berkman’s charges would extend the lead to 40-36 after three periods.
The lead grew to seven in the final stanza before Ryken rallied to tie the game with a layup at the buzzer 56-56, forcing overtime. In overtime, it was the Cardinals that prevailed, giving the visitors their first win in WCAC play after four grueling setbacks to the conference’s upper echelon squads. Ireton improved to 9-5 on the year, 1-4 in the WCAC.
Ireton remains on the road with a tripleheader match up in Olney on Tuesday when they face a dangerous, but winless Good Counsel (0-9, 0-6) at 7:30 at the Kane Center.
