A busy week of basketball for Bishop Ireton’s girls basketball, one that resulted in a pair of narrow setbacks and a lopsided loss for the Cardinals.
The Cardinals travelled to Holy Cross where the Tartans entertained the Alexandria school in a high scoring affair. The home team led 15-14 after one period, then jumped on Ireton with a 21-10 second quarter to take a 36-24 advantage into the locker room.
Ireton battled back in a high scoring third period to trail 54-45 heading to the 4th quarter. The Cardinals would outscore Holy Cross 29-26 in that final period, but fell 80-74. Cece Leone led the Cardinals with a game-high 24 points while Alex Stipano added 18. Amber Baker of Holy Cross led the Tartans with 19, one of four to score in double figures and overall ten players for the home team tallied points.
The Cardinals visited Holy Child on Friday for another road contest, this one a more defensive display. Again the Cardinals fell behind early, trailing 31-19, but battled back in the second half of the contest to close to a 56-51 setback in the final.
Once again, it was Stipano, with 20, and Leone, with 15, that led Ireton in scoring. Talley Britt, with an amazing 18-18 from the free throw line, that led all scorers with 25.
Saturday afternoon brought the Knights of St Mary’s Ryken to Godley Gym for a conference tilt. The cold, rainy day had little effect on the visiting Knights, who quickly jumped out to a 21-7 lead after one period. Their smothering full court pressure hounded the perhaps weary Cardinals throughout the first half as they built a 42-21 halftime margin.
The third quarter saw the lead grow to 58-28, and both squads substituted liberally in the game’s final quarter enroute to a 75-45 final.
The weekend leaves the Cardinals at 4-12 on the year, 0-7 in the WCAC. Next up for Bishop Ireton is a home date with the Falcons of Good Counsel. A tripleheader, the freshmen game opens the evening at 4pm followed by the 9-2 JV Cardinals at 5:45, and the varsity tipoff is slated for 7:30pm. The varsity game will be live streamed at FFMSports with Jack Lohrer doing the play-by-play.
