Coach Jon Norem’s boys soccer team opened the 2013 WCAC playoffs in grand style with a dominating 7-0 win over Archbishop Carroll on Monday at Ireton’s Fannon Field.
The Cardinals didn’t allow a Lion shot on goal until the second half when the game was all but decided. Senior Andrew Perham and freshman Matt Poling combined to whitewash the visitors from Washington, DC, each keeper seeing a half of action. The Cardinals poured 17 shots on goal in the game, the Lions managed a pair.
Kyle Delaney found Joey Faddoul in the game’s 11th minute and the honorably mentioned, all conference sophomore staked the Cardinals to a 1-0 lead. Faddoul would earn an assist moments later when senior, second team all conference performer, Spencer Amarantides made it 2-0. Three minutes later, Preston Haugh, another second teamer in the WCAC made it 3-0 and the home team was rolling.
Junior Henson Webre opened the second half scoring to balloon the lead to 4-0. Diego Rosende, Nick Ducceschi, and Gabby Sampaio rounded out the scoring for the home team, who now faces the perennial powerhouse, #2 seeded Gonzaga on Tuesday. Kickoff is 3pm on Long Bridge Field #3. The winner advances to the semifinals on Thursday. In the regular season matchup, the teams tied at 1-1, each converting a penalty kick in regulation. That time there was no overtime, in this matchup there will be a winner.
