Bishop Ireton’s girls tennis team ended their regular season with a 8-1 setback to diocesan rival Paul VI at home on Senior Day.
The Cardinals said farewell to five seniors before the match began, with Coach Katie Johnson introducing Alexandra Bowers, Megan Sullivan, Kellen Phillips, Catie Isham, and Avery Morrison. Each girl received flowers and a Nike sport bag with “A Cardinal for Life” embroidered on it.
Paul VI dominated the play on the court with Ireton winning only one of six singles matches and losing all three doubles matches. Junior Kristen Parker battled Mary Ellen Potter in #1 singles, but fell 8-2 after a number of closely contested games. Likewise sophomore Stephanie Lin was outlasted 8-2 by Anna Markl.
Haley McKeen fell 8-1 to Alisen Reyes in #3 singles and senior Avery Morrison had a back and forth match with Mandy Hope. Morrison jumped to a 4-3 lead, but Hope rallied to win the final five games for an 8-4 final. Molly Jeffers also fell 8-2 to Stephanie Porto in the #5 spot. Senior Megan Sullivan snared the Cardinals’ lone win, 8-4 over Kathleen Hope.
The Panthers Potter/Markl #1 doubles labored for a 8-2 win over Ireton’s Parker/Lin team while Catie Isham/Casey Jackson duo were bounced 8-0 by Reyes/Ellie Womack of PVI. Ireton’s Kellen Phillips/Alexandra Bowers pair were stopped by twin sisters, Mandy and Kathleen Hope 8-4.
Cardinals next action will come at the WCAC championship tournament in Olney, Maryland next week.
