Junior Kendall Cunningham stickhandles the ball in Ireton's game against Collegiate School of Richmond.

On March 16, Bishop Ireton(2-2) defeated Collegiate School (0-3) of Richmond 12-8 in the Lady Cardinals’ first home game of the year at Fannon Field. This was the first regular season victory against Collegiate in program history.

Leading the offense, sophomores Kelly Matthews and Charlotte Sofield got four goals and one assist, and three goals and one assist, respectively. Junior Kendall Cunningham, sophomore Christine Macey, and freshmen Kelly Larkin and Maggie Lohrer scored one goal each. Sophomore Isabel Obregon had one goal and two assists. Junior goalie Olivia Cole had six saves.

In a steady ice cold rain, Bishop Ireton squared off at home March 18 against perennially strong Georgetown Visitation (1-0). The visitors got out to an early 8-0 lead, led 11-1 at the half, and played a very aggressive defense the whole game. The final score was 16-3. For Bishop Ireton, Sofield got two goals, Cunningham scored one goal, Obregon had one assist, and Cole had eight saves.

The Lady Cardinals next faced off on March 20 against the nationally ranked St. Stephens-St. Agnes Saints(2-0). Hard lessons were learned as BI lost 16-1 to an overall older, more experienced opponent. There are 14 freshmen and sophomores, four juniors and three seniors on the BI roster. Sophomore Kaitlin Luzik scored the lone BI goal and Cole had eight saves. Bishop Ireton’s valiant effort was marred by early yellow cards which forced the team to play a 6×7 defense for about half the game.

The Lady Cardinals next game is against WCAC foe Paul VI at Fannon Field on March 26 at 4:00 p.m. Other key upcoming WCAC games include BI visiting Good Counsel on April 10 and hosting (2-0)Holy Cross on April 13.
